Clinton remembered the embarrassment that they felt at the end of the 2020 state championship game when they were beaten by Wagoner. The Red Tornadoes were determined to not have that same feeling in 2021 and it showed as they came out and absolutely dominated all four quarters, beating previously unbeaten Tuttle 35-0. The Red Tornadoes captured their 17th state championship with the win, moving them into a tie with Jenks for the second most state championships in state history behind Ada, who has 19. Jenks does play Union tomorrow in the 6A-1 title game, looking for #18.
But Friday night was all about Clinton and it started immediately as the Red Tornadoes absolutely shut down the Tiger offense in the first half. Tuttle’s defense would hold up in the first quarter as Clinton would put together back to back drives but came away with field goals on each possession. However, the flood gates would soon open. Tuttle would get a stop but Clinton would pin the Tigers at their own 1-yard line. Tuttle would go three and out and give it right back to Clinton. The Red Tornadoes would then begin a sequence of four straight possessions where they scored touchdowns. Caden Powell Caden Powell 6'3" | 210 lbs | LB Clinton | 2022 State OK would punch in the first of three touchdowns on the night to put Clinton up 13-0.
The Red Tornadoes would score again late in the second quarter on another touchdown run from Powell to go up 21-0 at halftime. At halftime, Tuttle only had 11 yards of total offense and didn’t have a single first down as the Clinton defense was on fire. Tuttle would begin the second half with the ball and they had some life with a good return and start to the drive. However, they would stall near midfield and punt it away. Powell would punch in another short touchdown run and it was 28-0. The final score came less than two minutes later as Tuttle would throw one of their three interceptions on the night and Clinton would nearly take it back for a touchdown. But Caleb Edwards would score from six yards out and after a scoreless fourth quarter, Clinton would walk away with a 35-0 championship victory.
Powell was magnificent running the Clinton offense, he finished with 134 yards and the three touchdowns on 26 carries. The rest of the Clinton team had 18 carries combined. Clinton made it very clear that they were going to put the ball in their senior quarterback’s hands and let him carry them to the championship. Powell also had nine tackles and led the team in that category on the night. From the opening of the game, Clinton played with a mentality that they were not going to lose this championship game.
