Joe Caswell – Anthony Wayne – RB/LB – 6’0″ 187 lbs
The offensive motto at Anthony Wayne should be to just get the ball in Joe’s hands. Anytime he touches the ball good things happen. Friday he was able to regularly pick up first downs and make defenders look silly when they tried to tackle him. He broke a 70-yard touchdown run early in the game that helped silence the opposing crowd. Caswell has great acceleration and very soft hands for a back.
John Thompson – Southview – FB – 6’1″ 215 lbs
Not a lot went right for Southview but the big fella deserves some love. He’s not the most explosive athlete but he’s a fun football player to watch. There aren’t many true FBs in this day and age and to have a good one like Thompson is a massive advantage for offenses. On Friday, they were drawing up FB screens for him. The best part, he’s so big and strong that he lowers his shoulders and runs over everyone he comes into contact with. He proved to be a weapon in the passing game and running game for Southview.
Brandon Langston – Springfield (Holland) – RB – 6’2″ 190 lbs
If there was one thing that was clear on Friday, it was that Langston can fly. He’s a bigger back and does everything you need him to. If he gets the corner you aren’t going to catch him because he has jets. He accelerates in a flash and is the fastest player on the field. They use him all over the field. They just try getting the ball in his hands in creative ways and it pays off. He’s dynamic and a great athlete. I hadn’t seen him play yet and I’m glad I did. He’s a phenomenal athlete and I hope he appears on these lists again in the future.
Nick Powers – Bowling Green – RB/WR – 5’9″ 160 lbs
Powers isn’t the biggest back but he plays like it. He gives every play the same effort and is a high-energy player. He keeps his legs churning until he hits the ground and it saves it more often than not. On one run he took it right off the C+ gap and ran into a wall. He pushed that wall 5-yards back into the endzone. That score tied the game late in the 4th and gave Bowling Green the juice they needed to close out the win.
Danye Thompson – Rogers – WR/DB – 5’7″ 155 lbs
Thompson may be small but he is shifty and reliable. Anytime the ball was thrown in his vicinity Friday he came down with the ball. He was feasting in the middle of the field all night and then when they put him out wide, he just ran past everyone. Thompson caught a few deep balls and showed the ability to adjust in the air to make the grabs. His concentration on those deep balls is a thing of beauty. He’s able to naturally track the ball in without getting lost. Thompson is very shifty with the ball in his hands and makes defenders miss left and right. In the slot, out wide, or in the screen game, it doesn’t matter. Thompson is a do-it-all offensive weapon and he’s only a junior so we have another year of development coming.
