Overview (Class A Preseason Ranking: #10)
The 2020 season was a tale of two halves of the season for the Mooreland Bearcats. They opened the year and were 1-4 after week six and would have to make some magic happen. They would close out the season winning three of their last four. Then, they would make a run in the playoffs all the way to the quarterfinals, where they would ultimately lose to Pawhuska. The Bearcats were done for and basically written off after week six and they ended up being one of the final eight teams in Class A. Fast forward to this year and the Bearcats have another brutal start to their season when you consider the teams that they’re playing. The first three games of the year are against teams that are ranked in our Class A preseason rankings. All in all, they have four games on their schedule against other teams that are ranked in the preseason rankings. But if we learned one thing about the Bearcats from last year, we can’t judge them on that first month of the season alone. However, they might not have that slow start again. They return seven starters on offense and another seven starters come back on defense. That will certainly help when they’re facing off with other ranked teams like Hooker, Pawnee, Thomas and Woodland. Having that experience returning, especially in their backfield on offense will allow them to contend with those other teams. That’s why they come in at #10 in our preseason rankings. Which Mooreland will we see for the majority of the year in 2021? The one that began the season 1-4? Or will it be the Bearcat squad that ended up being one of the final eight teams in the Class A playoffs?

Players To Watch
Conner Scarborough – 2022 Running Back
We mentioned above that the Bearcats were returning their backfield from a year ago and one of those standouts is senior running back Conner Scarborough. Mooreland was definitely a run-first team a year ago and the senior standout flourished in that role. He finished his junior season with over 1,000 yards on the season. The Bearcats are hoping to be more explosive so he’ll have some help from a few other players who will get reps at the position. But when it comes down to a big play situation, expect for Scarborough to be the guy making the play for Mooreland.
Evan Sampson – 2024 Linebacker
While Scarborough will be one of the senior leaders and standouts on offense, the Bearcats have a special talent in the making with linebacker Evan Sampson. Just a sophomore, Sampson was an instant-impact player for the Bearcats last year as a freshman. He is one of the leading tacklers returning for the 2021 season and if he takes that next step as a vocal leader, to go along with the athletic ability, Mooreland’s defense will be a strong unit. And again, the schedule is brutal so Sampson and the Bearcat defense will be leaned on, especially early on, to make stops.

2021 Schedule/Games To Watch
Sept. 3 – AT Pawnee
– The first of the September gauntlet is the only road game of the three games in September. Mooreland has three straight games against ranked opponents. If the rankings hold how they are, they’ll face #7, #6 and #5 in a four-week span. The Bearcats lost to all three of those opponents last year but proved that they could bounce back, despite the slow start, and make a run in the postseason. They won’t want to tempt things for a second straight year and have a repeat. It’ll be very important for the Bearcats to get at least one win out of these three games, preferably all three.
Sept. 17 – Woodland
Sept. 24 – Thomas
Oct. 1 – Burns Flat
Oct. 8 – Texhoma
Oct. 14 – AT Merritt
Oct. 22 – Fairview
Oct. 29 – AT Hooker
– We’ll know a lot about the Bearcats after the month of September. But the work isn’t over. The Bearcats have a very important district match-up in week nine as they travel to face a Hooker team that is ranked #9 in our preseason rankings. Dependent on what each team has done against Thomas, this could end up being for the district championship. A loss here, will make the playoff path a lot more difficult, as the Bearcats know firsthand after last year. The Bearcats will go up into the panhandle looking for a huge win, late in the season.
Nov. 5 – AT Sayre
