Prep Redzone Oklahoma was on hand for the Sooner7 Classic 7v7 tournament in Broken Arrow over the weekend. We saw some outstanding football from start to finish and starting today and continuing over the next few days, we’ll be highlighting some of the top performers from the action we saw first hand. We kick things off with this breakdown of the top five players that I personally saw during the tournament. Fellow Prep Redzone Oklahoma writer Jake Johnson will have his top five performers later on the website as well so be on the lookout for that. We’ll also feature breakout performers and scouting reports on some of the teams. Be sure to stay locked into the website for more coverage from the Sooner7 Classic and as always you can follow us on Twitter for all the latest in high school football in Oklahoma. @PrepRedzoneOK
[player_tooltip player_id="57166" first="Braylen" last="Irvin-Fisher"] - 2023 Tight End/Linebacker - Union
Sooner7 15U & Sooner7 ’23
We first saw [player_tooltip player_id="57166" first="Braylen" last="Irvin-Fisher"] last week during a 7v7 tournament with Sooner7 and we continue to be impressed with his game every time we see him. This weekend, Irvin-Fisher took his game to the next level and played the ironman role as he played for Sooner7’s 15U team as well as the Sooner7 ’23 18U squad. Not only did he play twice as many games as nearly every other athlete in the tournament, he also played on both sides of the ball. It’s not a stretch to say that Irvin-Fisher played more snaps than any other player in the tournament field, which featured over 60 teams. Let that sink in for a moment. Irvin-Fisher had a strong showing on the defensive side of the ball as a linebacker but once again he was at his best on offense as a tight end. For Sooner7 ’23, Irvin-Fisher was so consistent when they would get close to the end zone. When the play would break down, they could always rely on Irvin-Fisher to make his way to an opening to make a big catch. As Sooner7 ’23 made a run to the championship game, it was Irvin-Fisher who came up big in several spots that kept their championship run alive. Irvin-Fisher had to be a candidate for this list based on just the amount of time he spent on the field. But he also made the most of it by making plays.
[player_tooltip player_id="91049" first="Erik" last="McCarty"] - 2023 Running Back - McAlester
C4 Texoma
The only player from C4 on this list but not the only standout from this weekend is McAlester sophomore running back [player_tooltip player_id="91049" first="Erik" last="McCarty"]. The McAlester standout enjoyed a breakout sophomore season where he helped carry the Buffaloes to an appearance in the 5A semifinals. He was electric running the ball and during this weekend, he showcased his abilities in the passing game as a wide receiver. McCarty made some acrobatic catches look easy and showed why he should be considered not only the top running back in his 2023 class but one of the top overall prospects. With McCarty showcasing his abilities as a wide receiver, it bolts his stock sky high in this 2023 class. Bixby running back [player_tooltip player_id="38679" first="Braylin" last="Presley"] was our 2020 Player Of The Year and a big reason behind that was the fact that he led his team in receiving, in addition to being a dynamic running back. If McCarty is able to do that for the Buffaloes this fall, other teams in Class 5A are going to have some serious problems. McCarty also has the size to be a workhorse running back and also add the extra production of being a receiver. We can’t wait to see more of him at future tournaments.
[player_tooltip player_id="55156" first="Luke" last="Hasz"] - 2023 Wide Receiver - Bixby
Sooner7 ’23
Last week, we wrote about how Bixby star running back [player_tooltip player_id="38679" first="Braylin" last="Presley"] would be the star player to watch at the tournament. Well, I got the school right. Bixby sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="55156" first="Luke" last="Hasz"] was dominant every single game and an absolute mismatch against every opponent. The Bixby big man has already established himself as not only one of the top prospects in the 2023 state class but in the country. And you can go ahead and expect that to only continue after Hasz absolutely dominated for the majority of the tournament. The only thing that slowed him down was an injury to his foot on the second day. It seemed very minor as he was still walking around on it, but he did ice it and stopped playing during bracket play. However, despite not playing the entire tournament, Hasz was very fun to watch from the sidelines but we’re sure that it was an absolute nightmare for opponents. Hasz showcased his size plenty of times by going up and getting jump ball after jump ball. However, he wasn’t just a big man with hands, he showed off the wheels and acceleration a few times by making a few defenders miss while racking up some yards after the catch. If we gave out an overall MVP award for this tournament, it would go to Hasz.
[player_tooltip player_id="57163" first="Mason" last="Ford"] - 2023 Defensive Back - Coweta
Sooner7 ’23
He only played on Sunday due to regional basketball on Saturday, but [player_tooltip player_id="57163" first="Mason" last="Ford"] was an immediate boost to the Sooner7 ’23 squad’s defense. Ford made the most of his opportunities on Sunday and was an absolute lockdown corner for Sooner7 ’23. We’ve been impressed with the progression of Ford over the last year. He was a breakout star for Coweta as a freshman and has been playing really well with Sooner7 during the offseason as one of their better cornerbacks. Ford isn’t the biggest cornerback prospect in the state but what we saw from him on Sunday was enough to erase any questions about his size. Ford played press coverage all day against really good competition. He was very physical and the intensity was there all morning and afternoon. Nearly every game, Ford was matched up against an opponent bigger than him and it did not matter. It really reminded us of Booker T Washington 2021 CB [player_tooltip player_id="38494" first="Keuan" last="Parker"], a former Sooner7 player as well. Parker wasn’t the biggest CB prospect but it did not matter because of his physicality and speed. Ford showed that over the weekend and we cannot wait to see more of that from him this spring.
[player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"] - 2023 Quarterback - Choctaw
Sooner7 ’23
My final top performer from this weekend is Choctaw 2023 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"]. The Choctaw QB is without a doubt one of the best quarterbacks in his class and he’s off to a great start so far after two 7v7 tournaments. Wasel had a busy weekend as he took all of the snaps for the Sooner7 ’23 squad. Normally, Sooner7 rotates two quarterbacks during a tournament but the ’23 squad was without Grove quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38818" first="Carson" last="Trimble"]. So that meant Wasel had to step up and not only did he do that, but he helped lead his team to the 18U championship game, where they fell short to a squad out of Kansas City. Wasel certainly was helped by the play of his standout receiver [player_tooltip player_id="55156" first="Luke" last="Hasz"], who dominated. But he also had plenty of other players step up like fellow 2023 wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="47959" first="Micah" last="Tease"]. So Wasel had some weapons to distribute the ball too but he made the right play when he needed to. And anyone who has seen Wasel play knows that he is a competitor who certainly will get amped up at times but he kept his emotions in check when his team had to deal with some adversity. That’s a big step in the right direction for his progression as a big time quarterback prospect.
