Enjoy! The Class 6A-D2 state championship is set for 7PM on Saturday night at UCO’s Wantland Stadium. We’ll see a familiar face in the Bixby Spartans but their opponent is somewhat surprising after Choctaw stunned Stillwater in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Prep Redzone Oklahoma will have preview content throughout the week to get you ready for Saturday night’s title game. We continue with our championship preview content with all the players you need to know about for the Bixby Spartans heading into the title game. OFFENSIVE PLAYERS TO WATCH [player_tooltip player_id="38531" first="Mason" last="Williams"] - Senior Quarterback At this point if you don’t know the numbers for Bixby senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38531" first="Mason" last="Williams"], you haven’t been paying attention over the last three years. 35-1 as a starter. Over 100 touchdowns thrown. Two state championships with a shot at another. Williams will feel right at home on Saturday night as the Spartans play for another state title. Not only has Williams won two but last year’s championship was won because Williams took the Spartans right down the field for the game-winning touchdown. He’s one of the most successful quarterbacks in recent memory and the Spartans know that they can trust their third year starter to make right decisions. In an offense that has some young skill players, the senior leadership from Williams at the quarterback position can’t be overlooked and could provide a difference on Saturday. [player_tooltip player_id="38679" first="Braylin" last="Presley"] - Junior Running Back There are some fantastic athletes in this championship match-up but without a doubt the best playmaker in this game is Bixby junior [player_tooltip player_id="38679" first="Braylin" last="Presley"]. All you have to do is look at the numbers and specifically the numbers against other good teams and see why. He’s not just racking up stats against the lower teams in their district. He’s showing out against the best teams on their schedule. Coming into the season, we knew that Presley would be a very good running back and one of the better ones in Oklahoma. However, what has turned him into one of the special athletes in the state is his ability at the receiver position. And of course he’s comfortable there after catching the game-winning touchdown in last year’s title game. Presley might not be the fastest player in the state but we have no doubt that he is the quickest and shiftiest player. [player_tooltip player_id="54351" first="Jakeb" last="Snyder"] - Sophomore Wide Receiver Staying in the speed category, we go to the first of two sophomore wide receivers that have had breakout seasons. Bixby’s [player_tooltip player_id="54351" first="Jakeb" last="Snyder"] has been a reliable target for Williams in the passing game. He’s been the third option for Bixby behind Presley and the next player on our list below. But every time Williams targets Snyder, he finds a way to make a play. He’s similar to Presley in size and he certainly uses his speed to beat his opponents. Snyder has the chance to be Bixby’s X-factor on defense when you look at the potential match-up’s. Choctaw will certainly know where Presley is at all times. They’ll need to have one of their top corners on Hasz, that could free up Snyder to make plays on Saturday. [player_tooltip player_id="55156" first="Luke" last="Hasz"] - Sophomore Wide Receiver The other sophomore standout is [player_tooltip player_id="55156" first="Luke" last="Hasz"], who has become Bixby’s big target in the passing game. He doesn’t have the speed That Snyder or Presley have but standing 6’4, he provides Williams with a huge target down the field and he has the ability to catch passes that the other speedsters just don’t have the size for. Hasz is a potential candidate for breakout star this year as he has an extremely high ceiling. He was more of a basketball player coming into high school but he gave football a shot this year and it paid off immediately. He’s already gotten attention from D1 colleges, despite being just a sophomore. The sky is the limit for this young playmaker and he’ll have a shot at having a great career. DEFENSIVE PLAYERS TO WATCH [player_tooltip player_id="38626" first="Macqeilen" last="Ware"] - Senior Defensive Lineman We start on the defensive side of the ball on the line of scrimmage. The following statement about [player_tooltip player_id="38626" first="Macqeilen" last="Ware"] could go for all four players on this defensive list. Because of the team he plays on, and how dominant the offense is, Ware is underrated as a playmaker on defense. Ware has very good size for a defensive end and uses his speed and power to beat slower offensive linemen. Bixby will rotate guys in and out along the line of scrimmage but the best player on that defensive line is without a doubt Ware. The Bixby defense will look to contain the Choctaw running game and also confuse their young sophomore quarterback. If Ware can get into the backfield and make things uncomfortable, it could be a long night for Choctaw. [player_tooltip player_id="55157" first="Jack" last="Puckett"] - Junior Linebacker Junior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="55157" first="Jack" last="Puckett"] has without a doubt been a breakout player for this Bixby defense. It was obvious very early on that he would be a player to watch on this Spartan team as he announced his presence very early on. It seems like the Spartans have always had good linebackers during these championship runs and Puckett is the latest. And honestly, when you look at this Spartan defense, you can pick out a couple guys at the linebacker position that have been impact players. However, you can’t deny the production that Puckett has had this fall. We’re looking forward to seeing how he does against a Choctaw team that is extremely well balanced on the offensive side of the ball. Dylan Hasz - Sophomore Defensive Back The second Hasz to make this list is on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive back Dylan Hasz is Luke’s twin brother. They aren’t identical twins and Luke certainly has the size advantage, but Dylan is in the middle of having a breakout season as well this year. The sophomore standout has turned into a ball hawk on this Bixby defense. And not only has he come down with some clutch interceptions, he’s made it routine to take those interceptions back for touchdowns. Hasz and the Bixby defense will look to contain a Choctaw offense that has some star power as well and are playing some really good football right now. Devonta Owens - Senior Defensive Back The final player is going to be huge in this championship match-up. That’s Bixby senior cornerback Devonta Owens. The senior standout has been one of the better corners in 6A-D2 this year. Anytime you’re talking about cornerbacks, especially the talented ones, they won’t blow you away with stats because if they’re good enough, opposing teams don’t throw at them and they don’t have the ability to rack up those numbers. Owens is in that boat. However, if the Spartans are going to win another championship, Owens and the Bixby secondary have to do a better job containing Choctaw’s passing game compared to Midwest City in the semifinals. The Bombers were able to drive up and down the field on bubble screens and short passes. Owens and the Spartan secondary have to be aggressive and not let those drives happen.
