This offseason has also allowed athletes to train their way into shape while the nation was on a brief shutdown. College football camps have been far, few, and between all summer long, which has slowed down many prospects from getting much-needed looks. Here are five Toledo area athletes that are looking to gain college attention in 2020 in my five-part series.
Jeremiah Beringer Jeremiah Beringer 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Start | 2021 State OH – 21’ – Start high school
The 5’11 170lb Qb was first-team all Toledo City League in 2019 as a Jr. Beringer is the leader of the Start Spartans again in 2020, as his senior season will look different with more weapons on the outside. I had the opportunity to watch JB at practice, and his ability to throw on the run has improved along with his pocket passing. The new head coach Godfrey Lewis, the former Central Catholic assistant, looks forward to maximizing JB’s ability to pass and run in 2020. Along with playing QB very well, Beringer is also a second-team all-conference baseball player too for the Spartans. Jeremiah told me his team goal is to win the City League championship and make a playoff run.
Bryce Keller – 22’ – Whitmer high school
6’5 280lb Tackle is one of the biggest hidden gems in northwest Ohio. Keller has the frame to be a D1 offensive lineman, and he is hearing from multiple schools currently. Bryce’s older brother Riley Keller, who is now on a scholarship to play QB for Bowling Green State University, led the Panthers for four years. The offensive line is huge and athletic in which any QB would be happy to have. If Keller develops a dominant mean streak and does it often, college coaches will be lining up for a chance to have him play for their program. He has All-State Potential.
Charles Green – 22’ Wr – St Francis De Sales high school
6’4 180lb super talented under the radar prospect who has big-time potential. Green had a remarkable 12/12 catches and converted that into four touchdowns. I’ve had a chance to see Charles progression since Jr basketball; this kid can run and jump with the best in the city. Green is a spectacular talent in the 419 football area, and college coaches will start tuning in once football resumes. The Knights’ offense in 2019 was ground heavy, and Green only had a few chances to showcase. Charles has heard from many colleges and looks forward to making a splash in 2020. The more targets he gets, the better this team will be in 2020 as they have already established a dominant run game.
Steven McCoy – 22’ RB – St Francis De Sales high school
The 5’10 200lbs back is something special, and it was on display last season. McCoy came on the scene and took the first-team all-conference title as a sophomore. McCoy films highlight his ability to start and stop along with a burst into the second level of the defense. His super sophomore season has him as one of the top RBs in Northwest Ohio. McCoy rushed for 500 yards and four touchdowns as apart of a running back tandem for the Knights. He is returning as a must-watch back on Friday nights.
Rayshawn Green – 21’ DB – (Holland) Springfield high school
5’11 202lb Athlete from Springfield high school has been starting varsity for the Bluedevils since his sophomore season. Rayshawn is a well-rounded athlete that would start on most high school football teams if he showed up today. His ability to change directions and ball skills are unique for a player with his size. As a sophomore, Green had two forced fumbles and recovered both of them, which stands as a school record to date. Green has played LB, WR, SS, FS, and special teams. In 2020, Green will start at FS for the Bluedevils, along with being packaged on offense. Ray feels very confident in his role with the team as a servant leader.
