Zayne has been a solid prospect for Ironton for several years now. As a linebacker, he is an active player. He can be active as a plugger, quarterback spy, or a great zone coverage defender. He plays physical and is not afraid to be the first man to his gap. As a running back, he excels at shaking off tackles and has great contact balance.
Williams scored three touchdowns in the Fighting Tigers’ 63-21 victory over West Liberty, leading Ironton to a state championship showdown in Canton this week against Liberty Center.
Ironton has long been known as a blue collar, hardworking, smashmouth football type of program. Though they may run a spread offense then they did back in the day, that mentality hasn’t changed. Williams embodies those characteristics. He’s a sturdily built running back who thrives between the tackles but has the long speed to turn any run into a touchdown. When the ball is snapped Williams is explosive and immediately downhill. When he hits the hole, he has great vision and is an explosive one cut runner who immediately gets up the field. Zayne shows great contact balance as he’s able to absorb hits and stay on his feet to extend plays. At the next level I really like him in an outside zone offense where he can use that vision and one cut explosiveness to pound the ball at opponents. I’d be surprised if Williams did not start to pick up D1 interest and offers this summer.
