Zack Deschenes’ decision to transfer from Nashoba Valley Technical School to Suffield Academy looks like a wise decision for two reasons: Deschenes wouldn’t have much to prove if he remained at Nashoba Valley, as he was named the Commonweath Athletic Conference’s Most Valuable Player last season, when he rushed for 1,692 yards and scored 20 touchdowns (21 rushing). In addition, his blend of strength and speed should allow him to excel against bigger and stronger defensive players he’ll face in prep school. He’s an effective runner both on the edge and between the tackles, and he will likely make an immediate impact at St. Mark’s

Zack Deschenes burst onto the high school scene as a freshman, when he helped Nashoba Valley (Mass.) finish the regular season unbeaten for the first time in the program’s history. He rushed for just over 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns as a freshman, and increased his production significantly last season. Deschenes was selected as the Commonweath Athletic Conference’s Most Valuable Player after running for 1,692 yards and scoring 29 TDs (21 rushing) as a sophomore. Although he’s not in the fullback mode in terms of body type, he offers a good blend of power and speed and looks strong for his age. His running style makes him an effective ball carrier between the tackles and on the perimeter. He also has good football speed and can pull away from defenders once he’s in the secondary. Deschenes often took the direct snap on running plays last season, and he showed the ability to find open space quickly. His good vision and quick decision-making skills also make him a threat on kickoff returns. Based on his highlights, Deschenes played in a run-heavy offense, so it would require further evaluation to judge his receiving skills. His blocking ability wasn’t displayed in his highlights, but he certainly has a frame that would allow him to more than hold his own in that area.

has shown remarkable promise as a freshman running back, and his recent fall season highlights are a testament to his potential. Zach accumulated over 1,000 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in his debut season; he showcased exceptional field vision and agility, particularly evident in a standout game where he racked up 180 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries.
His highlight reel reveals a player adept at navigating open running lanes, often making defenders miss and sprinting off tackle untouched. However, to further elevate his evaluation, we would like to see more footage of him breaking through traffic and showcasing his power in finishing runs. These attributes are crucial for succeeding at higher levels of competition.
Zach’s impressive game speed and durability are essential traits for a rising talent. Expanding his skills to include blocking techniques and receiving out of the backfield will round out his game and make him even more versatile.
With ample time for growth and development,
