PRZMN is fresh off breaking down Tyler Ruff Tyler Ruff 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB Lakeville North | 2027 State MN and his athletic skillset on both the wrestling mat and gridiron for this Multi-Sport special feature that went live on the site last month and can be found here. The experienced Big School ‘backer is a heckuva upper weight on the wrestling mat, finishing his junior season as the 189AAA 3rd place finisher 2025-26, and he’s a 3x state entrant in his decorated career that has legitimate potential and upside to wrestle at the collegiate level. With a wrestling pedigree like Ruff’s, of course things would come together to create a hardest hitter, and boy does Ruff lay the wood.
The Lakeville North Panther is arguably the most technically sound tackler in his class – which is obviously reinforced by the wrestling background – as Ruff creates some high-powered and physical slams and dump tackles that are sure to leave a more permanent mark on opposing ball carriers. The 205ish-pounder accelerates and brings his hips through contact, and he closes with noticeable pace and speed. Ruff owns a nose for the football, and his instincts help him read, identify, process, and trigger on the ball with urgency. The ILB can shock, shed, and make tackles through and after contact between the tackles and around the box and is built for eating climbing OL and making tough tackles for minimal gains around the LOS, and he wins at the gain line and contact point, and attacks blockers with the physicality to knock them backwards and off their mark at initial contact. Power, power, and more power. Oh yeah, and physicality. Talk about a multi-sport prospect and recruit!

One of PRZMN’s personal favorite linebackers in the loaded 2027 LB class in Minnesota, 6’1, 205 lber. Tyler Ruff Tyler Ruff 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB Lakeville North | 2027 State MN is the latest installment of Lakeville North’s talented lineage of linebackers that can hold up amongst any program’s in Minnesota. Ruff is also one of the best wrestlers on this ultra-impressive list of multi-sporters, and he’s pulled off an eye-catching ranking’s jump between The Guillotine’s January 22nd to February 5th ranking’s update, pushing from a #3 ranking at 189AAA to #4 at 215AAA, which makes it safe to assume he’ll be competing at 215 going into the state tournament. Ruff also came in at #3 on the podium at 189AAA as a sophomore, concluding a heckuva state tournament run in the upper weights for an underclassman, and he’ll be going for his third state tournament qualification in this upcoming sections. Plus, he recently surpassed 125 career wings on the wrestling mat this past January and is a two-sport captain for the Panthers. Talk about a multi-sport recruit!
An off-ball LB who is a thumper at the contact point, Ruff demonstrates standout, eye-catching closing speed that really covers ground when he sticks his cleat in the turf, locks on, and triggers on a ball carrier. He displays noteworthy strength and leg drive as a tackler, helping him crush some 6A RBs in 2025, and he’s strong and physical enough to eat up blocks from front-seven defenders around the box, as well as make tackles both in space and through contact. Ruff has a great rep of him putting a crosstown fullback straight on his butt as an attempted lead blocker to highlight his skillset as a linebacker prospect. Whether it’s on the gridiron, on the wrestling mat, or possibly both, someone is getting a current AND future stud for their recruiting class!

Sticking with Lakeville North Panthers for another mysterious/high-upside sophomore who got some serious tick on varsity as an underclassman. I’m always going to be enticed by Lakeville North defenders, especially at the LB position, where the Panthers have a tradition of excellence in producing aggressive, technically sound, and high-octane second-level defenders at a pronounced clip. The fact that Ruff produced so well as an underclassman – totaling 38 tackles, 2 TFLs, a sack, and 2 fumble recoveries on varsity – and received so much action on such a deep roster as LNHS’s is also a massive plus on Ruff’s athletic resume, but when you dig into his background and his success becomes much less surprising. Wrestling in the Big School upper weights, Ruff is a 2x entrant to the state wrestling tournament and is fresh off a 3rd place at 189AAA in a loaded bracket that was heavy on upperclassmen this winter. I love me some wrestling success in front-seven defensive prospects, and his functional athleticism, physicality, and competitiveness have to be well above his peers in order for him to have so much varsity success so young, and in his limited tape from the Panthers 2024 season you can see that, as a LB, Ruff takes good angles to the football, does a good job of working up and under blockers working to the second level and can also defeat blocks with physicality, and is a strong 1v1 tackler. Wish I had more tape and more measurables and athletic data, but we can hopefully clear up some of the mystery this April at the PrepRedzoneMN Showcase. Stay on the lookout for the Panthers 2027 class going forward!
