Minnesota Multi-Sport Standouts: Wrestling Edition, Class AAA

Minnesota does a lot of things well in the prep sports space, but what I really think the Land of 10,000 Lakes does uniquely successfully is produce high-level multi-sport athletes at the high school level. To reinforce this belief, PRZMN is diving into a Multi-Sport Special Series while we are knees deep in updating the 2027 Big Board. Up first: wrestling! We'll be doing three installments of the wrestling series to round the week, finishing up the wrestling focus with some must-know football/wrestling hybrids from Minnesota's Class AAA Big School ranks. State tourney will be here in no time, get to know these standouts now!   *Rankings provided from <a href="https://theguillotine.com/2026/02/the-guillotine-high-school-rankings-class-aaa-february-5-2026/">The Guillotine's</a> February 5th update of the state's high school wrestling rankings   --   Class AAA    A well-known, upper-tier name well established in the 2027 MN ranking's Big Board, I've had the pleasure of watching Stillwater's [player_tooltip player_id='1629870' first='Andrew' last='Olson'] wrestle for the LOADED Ponies' wrestling squad a few times throughout his budding career, most recently at The Clash in La Crosse. Ranked 2nd in 285AA at the time of The Guillotine's January 22nd rankings update, Olson is currently sitting at #5 in the state and does not have another ranked heavyweight in Section 4, paving his way for a chance at a state title.   A rising three-year starter with a decorated athletic resume both on and off the mat, Olson is a 3-4 DT and true NG who is a gap-plugger and beast in the middle of MN 6A defensive line. The 275ish-pounder possesses a strong lower body and the balance to help him eat cut tackles off the snap at the LOS, great base and that can hold a gap, fight, and make tackles through contact, whether that's an arm tackle or post-shock/shed when he can square up a ball carrier in the hole. Olson displays lead in his hands good play speed for his size, can unlock his hips, and drives his feet and hand fights for optimal hand positioning with success. On the mat, he's one of the more accomplished on this talented list, placing 5th in Greco and 8th in Freestyle to earn All-American honors in both disciplines this past summer at the esteemed Fargo tournament. Olson is also a 2024-25 state entrant, and the MN #1 tournament heavyweight winner, besting current MN 285 #1 ranked Sawyer Schendel of Milaca 1-0. Can't wait to see this dude make some noise at the state tourney soon.   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/AndrewOlson079/status/1987716130996392366 </div></figure>     There is a exciting range of talent coming out of the Bemidji High School program right now. The 2027 class in particular has some intriguing prospects across a field of positional groups, with experienced and mismatch-nightmare [player_tooltip player_id='1205924' first='Nehemiah' last='Schwinghammer'] up there near the top of the heap of talent. Part of Schwinghammer's best attributes come out of his big-time wrestling background, which includes a 2024-25 state qualification and state place on the podium thanks to a 6th place finish at 215AAA to earn All-State and All-Tournament Team honors for the Lumberjacks. He was also a MN #1 tournament competitor at 215 pounds against Little Falls' Ivan Petrich, building momentum into a 2025 junior season on the gridiron that ended with 84 total tackles, 10 TFLs, 7 sacks, and 2 FF, earning All-District honors on the gridiron and visiting MSU-Moorhead for a gameday visit in November. Now ranked #2 at 285AAA, Schwinghammer is making a serious case for a state title in March, with sections looming closely on the horizon as we begin to wrap up the 2025-26 wrestling season.   As a junior, Schwinghammer showed off some major versatility and production, lining up as a true NG who can slide out to 3T or 5T if needed. He displays great closing speed and does a great job of breaking down in space, which allows him to act as a terrific 1v1 tackler, and he's an effective power rusher with super active & effective hand usage. Schwinghammer is dominant at the contact point and doesn't allow ball-carriers to earn extra yards post-contact, demonstrates a powerful, balanced base that really packs a punch against both blockers and RBs, and owns the play speed to pursue and run down ball carriers from the backside of the LOS. The 230 lber. also naturally works and melts into passing lanes and can sniff out screens like a bloodhound on a scent and is a crushing lead blocker as an acting HB/FB for the Lumberjacks' offense. [player_tooltip player_id='1629953' first='Tyler' last='Ruff'] is the latest installment of Lakeville North's talented lineage of linebackers that can hold up amongst any program's in Minnesota. Ruff is also one of the best wrestlers on this ultra-impressive list of multi-sporters, and he's pulled off an eye-catching ranking's jump between <a href="https://theguillotine.com/2026/02/the-guillotine-high-school-rankings-class-aaa-february-5-2026/">The Guillotine's </a>January 22nd to February 5th ranking's update, pushing from a #3 ranking at 189AAA to #4 at 215AAA, which makes it safe to assume he'll be competing at 215 going into the state tournament. Ruff also came in at #3 on the podium at 189AAA as a sophomore, concluding a heckuva state tournament run in the upper weights for an underclassman, and he'll be going for his third state tournament qualification in this upcoming sections. Plus, he recently surpassed 125 career wings on the wrestling mat this past January and is a two-sport captain for the Panthers. Talk about a multi-sport recruit!   An off-ball LB who is a thumper at the contact point, Ruff demonstrates standout, eye-catching closing speed that really covers ground when he sticks his cleat in the turf, locks on, and triggers on a ball carrier. He displays noteworthy strength and leg drive as a tackler, helping him crush some 6A RBs in 2025, and he's strong and physical enough to eat up blocks from front-seven defenders around the box, as well as make tackles both in space and through contact. Ruff has a great rep of him putting a crosstown fullback straight on his butt as an attempted lead blocker to highlight his skillset as a linebacker prospect. Whether it's on the gridiron, on the wrestling mat, or possibly both, someone is getting a current AND future stud for their recruiting class!   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/Tyler_ruff7/status/1982452981552300238 </div></figure>     Representing the Class 6A ranks and the powerhouse Stillwater Ponies wrestling program as of late, 2027 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1288354' first='Cael' last='Spates'] is a fun two-sport prospect who is currently ranked at #4 189AAA going into the sectional tournament. On the gridiron, Spates is a new name to the PRZMN radar and ranking's Big Board, acting as a 6', 200 lb. inside backer who runs the alley well and shows great play speed that can pursue out to the edge. He naturally finds the rock and acts as a turnover machine in the middle of the Ponies defense, displaying an excellent rep of him stripping an upright Mounds View kick returner for a huge momentum-shifter of special teams turnover, and he's physical when working in block defeat and as a tackler. Spates also demonstrates effective and impressive twitch as a blitzer who really shows some juice when working against OTs and OGs in pass pro, and he takes great angles to the football and is overall a highly-technical LB with a fun skillset when projecting to the next level. Get him on your board ASAP, college coaches!     The transition to 6A ball would not have gone so swimmingly without the efforts of tough, confident, weight-trained standouts like Samouka Kanneh, a Park Center transfer who is also a heckuva wrestler poised for a nice bump in the 2027 rankings. Ranked 6th in the loaded 189AAA rankings from <a href="https://theguillotine.com/2026/02/the-guillotine-high-school-rankings-class-aaa-february-5-2026/">The Guillotine</a>, Kanneh also had a strong season with the Huskies 2025 football team, finishing as the third-leading tackler (49) according to MNFootballHub.   A brick with a neck roll smack dab in the middle of Andover's defense, Kanneh shows big-time pop at the contact point, with hits so jarring that he knocked the ball loose and/or sending a ball-carrier twirling like a helicopter in mid-air (see the second rep of his highlights) on a couple hits off of pure power alone. He's one of the biggest thumpers in Minnesota's 2027 class, with good play speed, effective pursuit and leverage angles to the football, and the strength and agility to easily glide through and withstand big blocks and hits from climbing OL and streaking RBs around the box. The 6A, Big School Metro competitor has been stockpiling talent in seemingly every sport as of late, and their football & wrestling squads are especially stacked in 2025-26. An under-the-radar, multi-sporter who isn't earning some enough recognition is Quinn O'Fallon, a standout RB, special teamer, and wrestler for the Sabers who is currently ranked 10th at 152AAA, and given the heavyweight competition Shako has seen in 2025-26, I'd be on the lookout for O'Fallon come sections.   Can handle punts, kickoffs, and PATs/FGs, with strong mechanics, and accuracy on both his punts and PATS/FGs. Plus, O'Fallon totaled 13 rushes for 158 yards and 2 TDs to strengthen the Sabers' RB depth. Gotta love the versatility and toughness; this kid will find his way onto a college gridiron in some phase in no time.   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/QuinnOFallon1/status/1980287096632856893 </div></figure>     Albert Lea is certainly on the up-and-up, coming off their best football season since the late 1980s and transitioning that success to the wrestling mat, where the Tigers are perennial state contenders. 2027 QB/RB hybrid [player_tooltip player_id='1288346' first='Brecken' last='Wacholz'] was arguably the 2025 campaign's most dynamic and productive figurehead, leading the Tigers on the ground with 75 rushes for 578 yards and 7 TDs to go along with 25 completions on 43 attempts (58%) for 324 yards and 6 TDs to 2 INTs through the air, PLUS 64 tackles and 7 TFLs on the defensive side of the ball. Someone is more than due for a rankings bump and then some, it seems. To sweeten the pot and Wacholz's budding recruiting resume, Wacholz is currently ranked 7th at 172AAA and is a 2025 Fargo Junior All-American, placing 8th at 190 in Greco-Roman this past July, bringing some serious momentum from 2025 into the 2026 sectional and state tournament.   Sadly, the versatile, experienced, and electric multi-sporter Wacholz doesn't have any updated tape from the 2025 season, which breaks the heart of PRZMN, so I hope someone tells the Albert Lea product to update his Hudl account soon! The multi-sport talent is too good to go unwatched!   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/MNUSAW/status/1946681984220115251 </div></figure>     A 2029 freshman PRZMN is VERY bullish on going into the 2029 Big Board's rankings update, STMA has a big-time multi-sport prospect on their hands in DL [player_tooltip player_id='2102745' first='Phil' last='Harris']. Seeing a STMA Knight on this list of star-studded football/wrestling hybrids should already shake the boots of opponents as well as excite the recruiting board's of college programs looking ahead to 2029, and Harris looks like he has all the makings of a future monster on the gridiron. Sadly, he doesn't have any updated tape from the gridiron, but he's already a state qualifier who went to the X at 215AAA as an 8th grader, a fact that should very much excite recruiters looking for the Next Big Things out of STMA. Right now, Harris is ranked 10th at 215AAA, and with the experience from last year's state tournament as well as the competition the Knights' wrestling squad sees week to week and you have a potential sleeper in the 215AAA crop of wrestlers. Keep an eye out for Harris and his fellow freshman in the upcoming ranking's update for 2029.     A big-time sleeper out of Willmar, multi-sporter Lawson Anez is a standout on the gridiron, wrestling mat, and baseball diamond, proving himself to be a legitimate three-sport prospect for scholarship programs across the state and Upper Midwest. With good size for the LB position and when projecting to the next level, Anez was Willmar's leading tackler in 2025, totaling 92 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack, 1 FF, 1 FR, and 1 defensive touchdown, according to MNFootballHub. Additionally, Anez is ranked 8th at 215AAA, showing off some serious ability on the mat to boot. Sadly, no updated tape from Anez's gridiron exploits available publicly right now, although I am hoping that changes once someone shows him this writeup! Update your tape: juniors!     Sadly, not a lot of information is available on Brainerd Warriors 2028 multi-sporter Tyce Faber besides the fact that the LB is ranked 7th at 189AAA as a sophomore. A fun fact in its own right, Faber also has a Hudl account linked to Brainerd's football team, but there isn't any available tape, nor stats from MNFootballHub, nor Twitter account. Keep an eye out for the sophomore come sections and possibly state!     A three-sport athlete out of St. Francis and the Saints' 2027 class, Ferrario is a three-sport standout who is currently ranked 7th at 152AAA. He also added 24 tackles and 6 TFLs from his OLB spot for the football team, but only has outdated tape available on his Hudl and no social media to lean on. DIIIs and NAIAs, both in football and wrestling, you've been warned!     Yet another Centennial Cougars standout to add to their growing list of standouts to know, Ruegsegger proved he had some serious juice as a pass rusher in 2025, posting a couple sacks against big-time 6A competition from his hybrid OLB spot. Ruegsegger also embodies the Cougars' toughness with a #9 ranking in the state at 152AAA, setting himself up for some possible glory come state tournament time. Update your junior highlights, please!    --
