Expert Analysis
Mark Johnson | Prep Redzone Scout
Shane is another senior standout OL who led a dominant rushing attack to bring home a State Championship. The South Dakota State commit looks the part of a D1 prospect. He has a budding, powerful frame at 6’5″ 265 lbs, with room to continue to grow and add strength. Shane is a very athletic LT prospect. The senior is light on his feet and has the range to reach DL or get up to the second level. Willenbring also is very stout. He sets a strong wall when walling off DL to open up lanes for his RBs. The length, overall size, athleticism, and raw strength are there to mold at the next level. Shane is just getting started.

picked up offers from South Dakota State, St. Thomas, Wyoming, Air Force, Army West Point, Bucknell, North Dakota State, and a PWO from Wisconsin, plus multiple DII offers, before shutting things down and committing to the defending FCS natty champs SDSU during the Jackrabbits recent hot streak of commitments at the end of June. Willenbring helped the Blugolds to a WIAA Division 5 state championship last fall while showing off a ton of good traits as a two-way contributor with obvious athleticism. Offensively, watching him run and work out in space is very impressive, as he’s mobile and balanced and moves more like a LB than a 6’4, 265 lb.+ OL. He’s able to keep pace and stay in front of his streaking RBs while knocking down second and third-level defenders like a bowling ball through pins, and also possesses laterally agility, noticeable pop, and the capacity to burst into contact that really gets opponents on their heels and eventually on their butts. Willenbring is always working to finish, and also showed off experience in pass pro and can stay engaged with defenders throughout a rep. Defensively, he posted 55 tackles, 8 TFLs, and 4.5 sacks, and demonstrated power, effective hand usage, and some strong tackling capability. What a grab for the Jacks! We’ll be seeing Willenbring help compete for national championships before we know it.

I got the chance to watch Shane in action twice this week at Minnesota and St. Thomas camps, and the fact that this young man made our radar twice in one week is highly impressive. He showed off an OT prospect that was extremely fluid out of his stance with his first step when I watched him in 1v1s at both camps as Shane also showed off an excellent base with his positioning and balance from what I watched in Minneapolis and St. Paul on Friday at St. Thomas. This young man can be described as a downhill fright train especially when you watch him lead-block on tape, as Shane gets outstanding leverage and has a sound pad-level to match. Looking for a offensive linemen that will consistently block until that whistle blocks and one that can drive-block deep into the second level? Shane is what you are looking for. The Division I FCS and II offers from the Northern Sun have started falling quickly, and in my eyes it won’t be long until the rest of the Midwest Division I schools get involved as Shane looks like an FBS prospect in these eyes.
