About RJ
Expert Analysis
Jonathan Davalos | Prep Redzone Scout
RJ is a quarterback I’ve come across at multiple PRZ events, and each time he walks off the field reinforcing that he’s a name worth remembering. He brings a tall, sturdy presence to the position and pairs it with reading the coverage quickly, allowing him to move through reads efficiently. One area that stood out for improvement was his footwork, as his feet would occasionally stall while scanning the field. Still, RJ flashed high level ability, dropping in a well placed wheel route away from coverage and also connecting on a deep ball for a score early in the day. What adds even more value is his versatility, contributing at linebacker as well and nearly coming down with an interception late in one of their game.

announcing his first verbal offer from Syracuse University, he marks the third member of the Deptford Spartans 14U team from this past fall to set up show at a school outside his home state of New Jersey. Finlaw is set to line it up at Archbishop Carroll in Radnor, Pennsylvania this upcoming season. Finlaw is a powerful athlete that has played Quarterback at a high level during his pre-high school days, but also has the athleticism to play Linebacker. He’s also played in the defensive secondary at times too.

is poised to make a strong impression at Who’s Next, as he brings an ideal frame for the position that allows him to see over the line of scrimmage and fully survey the field. He is a clean, accurate thrower with a powerful arm and a quick release, consistently delivering the ball on time and away from defenders when I last saw him live. With his ability to protect the football and drive it downfield, expect RJ to showcase his arm strength and connect on several big time deep passes.

is a player to take notice of. Another athlete I had the chance to see compete earlier in the year, RJ solidified himself as one of the rising stars in the 2030 class.
RJ is built strong and can really put zip behind the ball. As he moved through individual drills and into live action against the defensive backs, RJ made it apparent he has devoted a lot of time to perfecting his mechanics, which led to well-timed, accurate throws throughout the day. Composed against the DBs, RJ showed patience in allowing the receiver to run his route and displayed strong decision-making to prevent any contested throws.
RJ’s size and football IQ translate well to the defensive side of the ball, as he lined up in 2024 as a ball-hawking safety. As a quarterback himself, he has a natural understanding of what the offense is showing him, allowing him to anticipate throws and jump routes to take the ball the other way. With RJ’s physicality and quick reactions, he covers a lot of ground quickly and delivers swift, hard-hitting tackles. Based on his size alone, don’t be surprised if we see him get some reps at linebacker in 2025.

- Coming into the 2024 AYF National Championship tournament, I thought of Finlaw as strictly a Quarterback. However, after getting a chance to watch him play live for multiple days, I realized he’s much more than “just a Quarterback”.
- Don’t get it twisted: Finlaw is a QB first and foremost. He threw some nice passes to the flat and on the intermediate levels. His accuracy was pretty good (room for improvement here) and he threw the ball with some nice spin on it too. He was everything I thought he was as a signal caller.
- The part of his game that really showed itself to me, is what he brought defensively. He has more of a muscular, broad Linebacker build, but played some Safety. Loved the way he came down hill into the box and laid the wood. He has another year left of youth football and I look forward to seeing how he grows/develops physically, which should help make what position(s) he plays going forward–much clearer.
