Expert Analysis
Brian Jerzak | Prep Redzone Scout
The best athlete on the field, Cummings-Coleman, started the game with a deep post for 40 yards. As a runner, he took an end-a-round for 15 yards and then a straight handoff for good yardage. He made a tough over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone, just getting his feet inbounds sidelines for a twenty-eight-yard touchdown. On defense, he flattened a ball carrier with a big hit. Late in the game, he almost won the game on the last play of the game. He took a pitch around the corner and cut across the field for thirty yards. He was one block away from scoring a walk-off touchdown.

When I spoke to Khijohnn earlier this offseason, he said his speed and acceleration were his two most significant assets. I would agree. Once in the open field, Cummings-Coleman’s long-striding style eats up ground. I didn’t see many defenders making up much ground. One play in his highlight package exemplifies this perfectly. He made a relatively harmless catch in the flat against Rogers and was surrounded immediately. But he saw a tiny bit of daylight. When he planted his foot, he exploded out his cut and made any angle the three defenders thought they had on him and broke into the clear for an 84-yard touchdown. He has excellent body control and is a threat to make plays on the sidelines and in the red zone – even when covered.

How did it go for you last season?rnI had a good season. I feel like I did everything I could, and that turned out to be something that led to a lot of team accomplishments and individual accomplishments.
Where did you typically line up?rnAt the beginning of the season, I would line up wide on the right side of the field. In mid-season, I started moving around a lot. I would play wide, in the slot, in the backfield. I would be in motion a lot.
What are your strengths as a wide receiver?rnI can catch the ball but I think it is my speed and acceleration. I think my creativity with the ball is also a strength.
How was the switch from running back as a freshman to a receiver as a sophomore?rnIt was difficult. I was going from freshman running back to a starting varsity wide receiver. The techniques moving from running back to wide receiver were tough.
What football skills have you focused on this offseason?rnI have focused on my speed, route running, and my hands. I have been working on my release of the line of scrimmage.
What did you do athletically in the winter and spring seasons?rnBasically, this winter, I went to a training facility two or three times a week. We focused on football skills, weightlifting, and speed. This spring, I ran track for the first time. I ran the 100, 200, 4X100, 4X200, and I high jumped a little bit. I went to State in the 4X100. We got to the finals at State.
What is your football plan this summer?rnI started a football summer camp with my team. I am working on my strength and speed. I am going to work on my route running and hands but also some defensive work to see if I can play some defense. If not, at least I can have that there to make myself more of a weapon.
How has the recruiting process gone for you?rnIt has been good. There have been some stressful moments with coaches texting every other day. It is something that I am trying to enjoy and be happy for.
What are you looking for in a school?rnI want to stay close to home so my mom can watch me play. I am looking at the school, academics, and the community. I want to have a good connection with the staff and the team.
Who are the schools that seem to be most interested in you at this point?rnIowa State, Central Michigan, and Northern Illinois have been the most interested in me. I just took an official visit to Central Michigan last week. have been to the NIU and Iowa State campuses a few times.

The other Top-10 newcomer burst onto the recruiting scene early in the fall, has quickly made up for lost time, and has risen to one of the most popular prospects in the 2024 class. Coon Rapids’ wideout Khijohnn Cummings-Coleman came onto the scene without previously being on a lot of programs’ radars, but that quickly changed after Iowa State made another great and early evaluation of a Minnesota prospect and trusted what they saw/heard and became the first to pull the trigger on an MN talent in mid-September. The Cyclones recruit the state about as well as anyone, and after they got involved Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, NIU, Central Michigan, and Army all joined the mix. For a full breakdown of his rapid rise and recruitment, make sure you check out the Top-10 MN 2024s, but to keep things short and sweet I am a big fan of KCC’s consistency in making tacklers miss, speed, and ball skills. He’s a great athlete and always a splash play threat from the WR position. There are some exciting skill players at the top-end of the 2024 class and KCC fits right in with the best of them. Welcome to the Top-10 and the PRzMN 2024 rankings, young man!

It’s a very exciting Minnesota 2024 WR group at the top end and Coon Rapids stud KhiJohnn Cummings-Coleman is MN’s hottest stock-riser into the P5 ranks of recruiting after he blew up early this past fall. There were several juniors who saw a rapid rise into P5 offers, but none quicker than Cummings-Coleman, who earned Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Kansas offers during the season and followed it up with Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, and Army offers this winter. He also took a visit to Iowa earlier this month, so keep an eye on the Hawkeyes during the recruitment as it continues to develop. With a good basketball background, KCC posted 51 receptions for 870 yards and 11 TDs to go along with 9 rushes for 137 yards and an additional TD for the Cardinals while displaying speed, elusiveness, and ball skills in droves. Able to consistently make that first man miss, KCC can turn routine plays into big gains and is liable to take the top off the defense anytime he goes deep. I also like his burst from a dead stop, ability to high point the football and win contested catches, and use a combination of quickness and contact balance to break tackles. There’s a lot going for the junior and I would be pumped if he joined the growing Gopher commitment class when things are all said and done. However, I think we’re still far from a commitment to anyone, so enjoy the rest of the ride this offseason and next fall. I’ve loved seeing this recruitment and welcome to the Top-10, KhiJohnn!
