-Shields is a vastly underrated prospect. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker is big, tough, physical, strong and very productive; he finished second in the country in tackles last season with 251 total and 143 solo. Mowery-Shields has great range, closing speed, instincts and explosiveness. Having seen him live, I am shocked college coaches did not offer during the contact period. Mowery-Shields has huge upside as a recruit.

-Shields, a Class of 2027 recruit, is around the ball no matter where he is. Mowery-Shields forced a fumble in the first half, can shed blocks and use his sheer size, bulk and frame to rip and disengage off blockers. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Class of 2027 recruit is second in the country in tackles and is deserving of Division I attention.

Mowery is a highly productive LB who has not slowed down with his production and how he plays the game. He sees the game well and doesn’t hesitate when he commits. His instincts are as good as they come, which is why he’s always there to make the play. He ended Friday with 27 total tackles, 14 of which were solos.

Mowery-Shields didn’t just lead the state in tackles last season; he led the nation in tackles. With a whopping 238 tackles, there’s no doubt about it: the 6-foot-3, 235-pound outside linebacker from South Putnam knows how to be around the football. What’s more: he added four forced fumbles and 2.5 sacks. He has tremendous instincts, is quick to read and react on the move, and has great range. His size-speed combination will make him a top prospect in recruiting after his upcoming junior year.

Excellent size/frame, height. Interested to see how he develops over the next few years. Has great instincts, flows to ball, can be a real thumper.

Mowery had a fairly productive freshman year that showcased he belonged, but the jump he made from year 1 to year 2 was astounding. As a freshman, he put up 109 tackles, 45 being solos, 1.5 sacks, 1 interception, 4 passes deflected, and 3 forced fumbles. As a sophomore, he nearly tripled, yes, tripled, that production. 238 total tackles, 132 being solos, 18 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, 11 hurries, 1 interception, and 8 forced fumbles.

As it stands now, Mowery is currently one of the higher ranked players in the 2027 class, and I can’t imagine that will change anytime soon. With the performance he just put together Saturday combined with what he did on the field this past fall, it’s clear to me he’s on the path to being a star for the class. He weighed in Sunday at a very healthy 6’1 and 240 lbs. He then followed that up by running a 4.97 40-yard dash and having the 2nd longest broad jump of the day. His drill testing was sound and he seems to have a good head on his shoulders in terms of ball tracking and being able to track the outside hip. He picks things up quickly and then is able to translate it to the field as well. There are so many boxes he checks already that it’s hard to imagine he’ll be hidden for much longer.

It’s not often you find a freshman with the size and strength that South Putnam’s LB

possesses, which automatically puts him on P5 radars and puts him into that hard-to-find echelon of biggest, fastest, strongest that make up the studs we see on Saturday’s during college football season. Mowery measures in at a eye-catching 6’3, 230 lbs. and already benches 335 pounds, squats 555, hang cleans 335, and power cleans 315, all of which have video evidence and all of which are extremely impressive. You simply can’t keep a player with that size/power off the field if you’re a high school program, and Mowery has been tearing it up as an OLB/OT. After the first five weeks of the season he was sitting at 48 tackles, 15 TFLs, an INT, a FF, multiple PBUs, and 18 pancakes, and his skillset is one of power and dominance that you can’t help but excited about when getting eyes on him. The 230 lber. is instinctive and agile enough to drop into passing lanes and has the speed to take the rock to the house after an interception, can easily work and make plays through contact – including double teams – especially with a full head of steam when shooting gaps or triggering on ball carriers, and displays eye-popping strength that can rip the ball out of a RB or QBs hands like he’s taking candy from a baby. Mowery closes well, keeps his feet active and does a good job of adjusting to ball carriers paths, can pursue out to the sideline and run down RBs and WRs, and is a violent tackler who gets the most out of each and every hit. As an offensive lineman, he’s a destructive finisher, is able to pull and wrap back or around the LOS, shows great leg drive between the whistles, and is comfortable and effective in space. What a skillset and what a start to his high school campaign. You’ll be hearing a lot more about this dude the next 3-4 years & beyond!
