We’ve mentioned this a few times this season but there’s no doubt that Cushing has exceeded all expectations this season. Senior quarterback John Hilligoss John Hilligoss 6'0" | QB Cushing | 2024 State OK had a tall task of replacing one of the best quarterbacks in the state from a year ago and the Tigers had to replace a ton of key players from last year’s runner up team. Hilligoss has passed just about every test this season. They even pushed Wagoner in the regular season in a game that ended up deciding the district championship. Hilligoss and the Tigers want to continue to surprise Class 4A with another deep playoff run this month.

Week after week, Cushing continues to prove that they aren’t even close to taking a step back in Class 4A and the Tigers are going to still be contenders when the playoffs begin in a few weeks. The Cushing offense absolutely rolled as they beat Cleveland with ease in week eight. Quarterback John Hilligoss John Hilligoss 6'0" | QB Cushing | 2024 State OK was perfect in the win and there’s no other word to describe his performance. He went 13-13 for nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown on the ground and an interception return for his sixth total touchdown in the win. His night was over by halftime as the Tigers ran away with the easy win. Cushing jumped up into the 4A rankings over the weekend and they show no signs of slowing down as we get closer to the playoffs beginning in November.

After another tough loss to Wagoner in week six, Cushing bounced back in a major way with a 41-6 win over the road against McLain. Cushing quarterback John Hilligoss John Hilligoss 6'0" | QB Cushing | 2024 State OK had a big evening in the win over the Titans. He finished with nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns through the air. He also added two touchdowns on the ground. Cushing fell to Wagoner in the 4A title game a year ago in a heartbreaker and then fell by a point to the Bulldogs in week six. Bouncing back the way they did was impressive to see. Cushing is also one step closer to a home playoff game and locking up the two seed in the district. The Tigers lost a special senior class but Hilligoss is making sure that the Cushing offense is still among the best in Class 4A and that they are still a team to watch

Just like Matheson is becoming the top offensive weapon in the offense as he replaces Crooks, 2024 quarterback John Hilligoss John Hilligoss 6'0" | QB Cushing | 2024 State OK is stepping into a new role as QB1 this season. Hilligoss replaces Blaze Berlowitz, who was one of the top quarterbacks in the state over the last two seasons. As we mentioned earlier in the preview, some of these new starters aren’t going to be thrown into the fire for their first action this fall. Hilligoss was the primary backup for Berlowitz last season and as the Tigers would have a lot of games in the books by halftime, Hilligoss got into the games most weeks. He will benefit from having a player like Matheson back to have some firepower on offense. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do with the Cushing offense this fall.
