Jacob is the third leading tackler on his team this year, but he has a special ability to make explosive, game-changing plays. Last season, he had 23 tackles for loss and 12 and a half sacks on the season. I think Jacob has a lot of potential as a 3-down linebacker who can play inside on the next level – his team needs him more outside and as a pass rusher this season, but with his size and athletic ability, a college football program will get a steal here.
Our biggest single riser in this linebacker class, Simmons plays a different role than a lot of the guys on this list, as an outside linebacker with some edge rushing abilities. App State jumped in with an offer just after our last rankings update and we’ve since been impressed with him in camp settings. He can rush the passer or drop in coverage, with solid athletic abilities.
With 12 sacks from his outside linebacker position last season, Jacob came on the scene strong for a good Charlotte Christian program. Obviously, Jacob’s speed off the edge is a big part of his game. Jacob also shows the ability and discipline to drop and cover in both man and zone concepts. I like Jacob’s skills to play and tackle well in space also. Jacob has an offer from Appalachian State, and should receive a lot more attention as we go through the summer camp season.
Jacob jumped on my radar when he had 4 sacks in the first game of the season, which was a precursor to a breakout season at his outside linebacker position. Jacob had 52 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks last season on a team with a number of very good defensive players. From a recruiting perspective, Jacob picked up an offer from Appalachian State earlier this month, and has some additional recruiting attention as well. I am excited to see what his senior season has in store for sure.
