Expert Analysis
Matt DeBary | Prep Redzone Scout
A South Georgia quarterback who was thrown into the fire last season as a freshman for one of the best programs in the state, Lawson got a first-hand look at how tough it is to make plays as a freshman. He may not have lit up the stat sheet, but he played with impressive confidence for someone his age, impressive mobility, and natural arm talent. He’s a 2028 quarterback on the rise who could have a big sophomore season next fall if he continues to work hard and improve more and more over the next five months. He’s now ranked as the No. 5 QB in the state for his class according to Prep Redzone.

is one of the most productive freshman QBs in the state. When compared against the level of competition, you could argue he is outperforming any other freshman QB in the state. From a young age, Lawson drew rave reviews thanks to his athleticism. Our PRZ Next Scouts considered him athletic enough to play a skill spot in HS, but he has fully grown into his role as a signal-caller. He is a shorter, stouter QB, hovering around 6’0 and 180 pounds. He is an efficient runner, proving his explosiveness in the running lanes. Operates off-platform well, frequently getting out on the move and escaping pressure well. He has very clean passing mechanics, keeps the ball high and gets it out of his hand quickly. He throws the ball with good spin and can mix up trajectories, allowing him to layer the ball over LBs and make some touch throws. Lawson has plenty of desirable traits and he will be battle-tested against good comp. He reminds me a little of

The future of Lawson is unpredictable just like his many abilities on the football field. Primarily, you will find him taking snaps behind center, but he can be just as affective at WR, RB, LB and Safety. His proportioned build resembles a young Tebow with way more speed. This past season he caught everyones eye at the Future Stars Camp in which he walked away with MVP honors and proved he has the goods to compete at various positions at a very high level. Last Thursday, Lawson got to suit up for his first real action and helped lead his team to a 36-0 blowout over Thomasville. He threw for over 100 yards and 3 touchdowns. Then ended the game in bully fashion by running over two defenders to reach pay dirt on the ground. I expect this young man to put up video game numbers all year.

– After coaches and our scouts raved about his tryout for the Georgia Future Stars back in March, I was excited to see him play in this setting–and he did not disappoint in the least
– Passed the eye test right away in terms of having an athletic build. Then, watching him closely during one of the first practices, I could see what everyone else was talking about. His versatility and diverse skill set was impressive to watch on display
– He’s another prospect I have listed as an ATH because he can play a lot of positions. During Future Stars played the “Sniffer” position–which was a new term to me, but benefitted Lawson. It’s essentially a hybrid running back/tight end/H-Back position where he used his size/strength (5’11, 175 lbs.) while blocking, but also allowed him for him to be eligible as a receiver

There is a ton of excitement about what Lawson brings to the table in terms of versatility for this Georgia Future Stars 7th Grade Team. During the South Georgia Tryout, at which he won MVP, Lawson showed the ability to play anywhere from quarterback to wide receiver on offense and linebacker or in the secondary on defense. On the roster at 5-foot-11 and 172 pounds, he’s an important chess piece for Georgia and watching where he lines up will be intriguing.

Words cannot explain the camp that

from Colquitt County had this weekend. A 5-foot-11, 172-pound 2028 prospect that tried out at Quarterback and demonstrated a very powerful arm. He was making throws to every area of the field and was throwing with a high school ball. He would have won MVP as the QB, but Lawson wasn’t content. He went on to rake reps at Wide Receiver and Defensive Back during the seventh-grade session and was the best player at each of those positions also. Lawson’s 5.09 in the 40-yard dash was the fastest seventh-grader so far. He was so impressive during the seventh-grade camp, that some of the high school players convinced him to stay for the eighth-grade camp too. Lawson accepted the challenge and was also a standout during a loaded eighth-grade session, battling the top receivers as a defensive back, beating some top corners as a receiver, and still being the best quarterback in that camp also. Lawson has a very bright football future—at whatever position he settles in at.
