Kater popped on my radar this offseason on the 7v7 circuit, but he impresses with the pads on as well. He can play both ways, but I think will project best as a DB. He is an explosive player with an attacking, downhill playstyle. On both sides of the ball, he is energetic, physical, and isn’t afraid to go for momentum swinging plays. You’d rather have to coach that out of a kid than into one, which sets him up nicely for future development.

I had my first look at Kater on the 7v7 scene this offseason and thought he was the most steady, consistent performer on his team. He played both ways for Carver last year, drawing my eye most as a DB. He has functional measurables on a stronger, more filled-out frame. He is an explosive, sudden, attacking player downhill who plays with energy as a pursuer and a tackler. He isn’t afraid to get his hands on receivers at corner, too. He plays with a similar physical edge on offense, both before and after the catch.

Kater, who holds an offer from Alabama State, flashed on both sides of the ball. He is listed at 6’0 170, but plays even bigger. From game 1 today, he consistently rose through contact to make plays in the endzone, and also came away with an INT. Kater has obvious D1 athletic traits, but he also has the hands and body control to execute when in position, which will continue to translate for him as he matures and gets older.

“Defensively, Kater thrives off his speed and makes a ton of hustle plays at CB. He’s quick on his feet, is great in pursuit, and can slip by blockers to make some impressive tackles close and behind the line of scrimmage. Kater is just as impressive in coverage. He’s physical in press, isn’t easily baited, and sticks with his assignments all over the field.

Kater is also a huge factor on special teams. He’s a talented returner who frequently puts his team in great starting field position. I can’t wait to see more from him this upcoming season. He has a ton of talent.”

Kater picked up an offer from Alabama State this past week, and with his talent, I’m sure more are on the way soon.
