Two teams, Woodrow Wilson and Red Bank Catholic, exited the rankings after tough losses last week where Cherokee shut out Woodrow Wilson by a 35-0 score and Red Bank Catholic lost a tough battle to Middletown South, 32-25. And, of course, River Dell put an end to Ramapo’s 27-game winning streak. Week 3 could be even more exciting and unpredictable. Let’s take a look at the impact players for this week’s teams ranked 6-10.
Richie Sica, Ramapo: Ramapo saw its 27-game unbeaten streak come to an end at the hands of River Dell. Ironically, the last team to beat Ramapo prior to this past week was River Dell in 2017. As a result, the Raiders dropped six spots in the state rankings. Sica, a senior, ran for 114 yards on 16 carries with a score in the team’s season-opening win over Pascack Valley. He caught a TD in the loss to River Dell. He has big-play capability and he’ll be key along with quarterback Charles DePrima Charles DePrima 6'2" | QB Ramapo | 2021 State NJ . Ramapo looks to get back on track at Demarest on Oct. 16.
Cole Freeman, Delbarton: Delbarton sits at 2-0 and jumped up eight spots to No. 9 this week. Freeman has been strong for the Green Wave at quarterback. He has shown capability of making plays happen in the air and on the ground. Delbarton is coming off a massive win over DePaul. The team’s schedule certainly doesn’t get easier this week, as the Green Wave takes on another state power in No. 11 Don Bosco Prep on the road Friday night at 7.
Kyle Major, Northern Highlands: Northern Highlands is 2-0 and No. 8 in this week’s rankings. The team has put together two convincing wins, including this past week in a 38-10 rout of Ridgewood. Major came on at quarterback and was efficient, going 9-for-14 for 149 yards and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Chirugi. He also rushed for 44 yards on nine carries with a 6-yard score. Nick Branca was efficient for Highlands on the ground, rushing for 97 yards on 17 carries with a pair of scores. Northern Highlands plays at Wayne Valley this Friday night.
John Volker, Rumson-Fair Haven: Volker, a Princeton commit, has been strong in two games for 2-0 and No. 7 Rumson-Fair Haven. He has totaled 289 yards on 23 carries with five scores in blowout wins over Long Branch and Middletown North. Rumson has allowed just nine points through two games, and its offense has been able to capitalize. In a 28-0 shutout of Long Branch last week, Volker ran for 168 yards on 13 attempts with TD runs of 34, 56 and 58 yards. The Bulldogs could be challenged this week when they meet Red Bank Catholic on the road Friday night at 7. Red Bank Catholic dropped out of the state rankings this week.
Turner Inge Turner Inge 5'11" | DB Williamstown | 2022 NJ , Williamstown: The Williamstown defense has been the story for the No. 6 team in the state thus far, shutting out Timber Creek, 21-0, in its season opener and then getting past Kingsway in a 13-6 game last Friday. Inge broke a 6-6 tie in that game with a 6-yard score to lead the Braves to victory. He finished with 54 rushing yards on 11 carries. Williamstown quarterback Doug Brown found Keon Sabb Keon Sabb 6'2" | ATH IMG Academy | 2022 FL on a 72-yard TD earlier in the game. The Braves take on Willingboro Friday evening.
