6A: Devon Dampier Devon Dampier 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Saguaro | 2023 State AZ , QB, Pinnacle HS (2023)
Dampier will face the toughest matchup of his young career by taking on the nationally ranked #7 Chandler. Dampier lit it up last week by throwing for 230 yards and 5 TD’s, while adding another 45 yards on the ground with 2 scores. The 7 TD performance by Dampier has solidified himself as one of the most dangerous players in the state as a sophomore. However, the Chandler defense gave up just 10 points against the defending 6A champs Liberty High School in week 1. The talented sophomore will be tested this Friday by the Chandler defense, but Dampier and the Pinnacle offense are among the state’s most explosive group, so look for him to turn more heads week 2.
5A: Earnest Greenwood Earnest Greenwood 5'7" | 160 lbs | RB Goldwater | 2021 State AZ , ATH., Goldwater HS (2021)
Greenwood enters week 2 as the leading rusher for 5A. Greenwood racked up 284 yards and 3 TD’s on 26 carries on the loss to Deer Valley. Greenwood showed to be an explosive, slippery back with big play ability. He was very explosive laterally and out of his cuts while showing ideal field vision. We mentioned Greenwood earlier in the pre-season as a sleeper, and there should be nothing “sleeper” about him, as he is one of the most athletic RB’s in the state. Greenwood will face Apollo High School, and will be the go-to guy once again in week 2.
4A: Christian Johnson Christian Johnson 6'0" | 195 lbs | RB Greenway | 2021 State AZ , RB, Greenway HS (2021)
Johnson popped off for 323 yards and 4 TD’s on 19 carries on a blowout win vs Moon Valley. After one week of play, Johnson leads the entire state (6A-1A) in rushing yards. Johnson is an aggressive ball carrier with good balance, and will look to have another breakout game vs Estrella Foothills, who had given up only 6 points to Kellis High School in week 1. He is clearly the go-to guy for Greenway, and it will be very impressive if he can keep the pace rolling into week 2 to build off his state leading performance.
3A: Bryson Alder, RB/DB, Wickenburg HS (2021)
Alder rushed for 232 yards and 5 TD’s with 21 yards receiving in the victory over Parker High School. Alder was the majority of the Wickenburg offense by touching the ball 22 times while averaging 11 yards per carry. Alder will be tested this week against a Dysart defense that shutout Coronado in week 1. He is a hard, downhill, powerful back that can bruise up defenses, yet he also showed on Friday that he can cutback and breakaway in open field. Look for him to resume the workload in week 2.
2A: Ben Tobin, ATH., Scottsdale Christian Academy (2021)
Tobin hit the trifecta by throwing, rushing, and catching TD’s all night during week 1. He totaled 103 yards passing, 98 yards rushing, and 8 yards receiving for 6 total TD’s. Tobin was electric on Friday by showing good speed, shiftiness, good lateral agility, and solid vision. As a QB, Tobin was poised in the pocket and was also able to scramble out of pressure to make plays. Tobin is one of the best in 2A, so look for another great week from him in week 2.
1A: Rocky Sandoval, QB, Bagdad HS (2021)
Sandoval threw for 380 yards and 5 TD’s while adding another TD on the ground on the loss to Williams High School. The heartbreaking loss should add a fire to Sandoval, in which he could have another big game vs Cicero Prep. Sandoval displayed a quick release with good arm strength Friday night, so look for him to bounce back and be a gunslinger to get Bagdad in the win column.
