Kentucky '29 Prospects Who Stood Out in Week 1

Sophomore season is done loading, and it's time for the Class of 2029 to show us what they've got. A few across Kentucky have already done that, and look to build off their big-time Week 1 performances to begin the new KHSAA football season. Here are a few:    [player_tooltip player_id='1756976' first='Dillon' last='Cruver'] threw for two touchdowns and ran in another during Danville's 49-7 win over Marion County on Friday night. Cruver showed fantastic poise in the pocket and only rolled out or scrambled when necessary. Cruver showed his maturity by keeping his eyes downfield after going through multiple progressions. He puts a lot of zip on his throws that help put the ball on a tightrope accurately to his receiver. He also has a strong arm, which he put on display several times on deep throws over the middle and down the seams. Cruver has a bright future in Danville as the Admirals look to build on their 9-win season from a year ago.     [player_tooltip player_id='1598512' first='Jermiah' last='Quick'] is one of the best wide receivers in his class, but it was his defensive prowess as a cornerback that made him stand out in Week 1. Quick recorded an interception, one pass breakup, and a tackle against No. 24 nationally ranked Anderson (OH) High School in a shocking 59-13 upset victory on the road. During the matchup, Quick did a great job of reading the quarterback's eyes downfield, anticipating throws and undercutting routes to make a play on the ball. As the season progresses, I expect him to get more looks at receiver, but it's clear he also has huge potential as a DB over the next few seasons.     [player_tooltip player_id='2220020' first='Max' last='Oliverio'] established himself as a standout linebacker on DeSales' defense last season as a freshman. This saw him finish the season with 82 total tackles (56 solo), 10 TFLs, and 5.0 sacks. Fast forward to last Friday, and Oliverio was all over the field, having recorded 14 total tackles and 3 TFLs despite losing to Oldham County 38-10. He also made a big-time special teams play with a blocked punt to help give his team a chance offensively deep in enemy territory. Oliverio is a player who gives great effort in the middle of DeSales' defense and does a great job at sniffing out plays, covering his gaps and bull-rushing his way through the line of scrimmage.     [player_tooltip player_id='1789982' first='Keylan' last='Bailey'] was the bright spot in Caverna's 65-19 loss to Trigg County on the road in Week 1. He scored two touchdowns offensively, one on a 50-yard touchdown run as the wildcat quarterback. Another was a 42-yard reception, which allowed him to break free along the outside. He was also a major threat on special teams whenever he received the ball and even ran in a kickoff return for a touchdown. His team dressed 15 players during the matchup, and despite having to play basically the entire game, he kept making plays for his team when his number was called. If Caverna has a chance in any game this fall, it will be on Bailey's back.     [player_tooltip player_id='1518213' first='Brandon' last='Smith'] took a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening play of the season against Ryle in what would become a 50-6 rout over their Northern Kentucky rival. Smith is coming off a freshman season where he exclusively played varsity, finishing the 2025 season with 52 total tackles and a pair of interceptions. Smith joined his team's '20 MPH club' this offseason, which solidified his speed, quick reaction time, and ability to stick with receivers on any route. He showcased this numerous times as a freshman, and appears to have picked up right where he left off following Covington Catholic's big-time Week 1 victory.
