At this point of the season, the Varsity team has accomplished a 5-1 record, with 2 of these wins being within their region. For what it is worth, the only loss that Buford has had this year has been to an out of state team, which happens to be Hollywood Florida’s famous high school, Chaminade-Madonna. In this game, the competition was close, as they only lost 7-0. If this is any indicator of the level in which Buford is playing it, it is certainly a good one. This can also be reflected in the fact that the most that an opponent has scored against them in a single game this year has been 27 points. In addition to this, entering into week 7 of the regular season, there have only been a total of 54 points scored against the wolves this year, while they have managed to put up 136 points at this point of the season.
While we will certainly highlight both sides of the ball, as they have both had their fair share of success, it is undeniable after seeing the total points that they have put up so far this season to ignore the fact that the Wolve’s offense has been a force to be reckoned with. Outside of their 7-0 loss, the average points per game that they have put up has been 22.6. In addition to this, they have only won one game without having scored at least 30 points. This came during their win against Clarke Central, as they won 16-3. To add to this, QB, Ashton Daniels has had a great season so far, which has helped lead the offense in a big way. He averages over 100 yards a game, has thrown for 5 TD’s, and has rushed for one as well. His primary target this year has been Isaiah Bond Isaiah Bond 5'10" | 160 lbs | DB Buford | 2022 State GA , who has 273 receiving yards, and a TD. Outside of Bond, Tobi Olawole has also had big contributions, as he has caught 3 TD’s so far this season. With all this, perhaps the area in which the offense has had most of their success has been in the running game. Not only have the Wolves already totaled more than 800 rushing yards, but they have 2 players with over 200 rushing yards. This includes the likes of Victor Venn Victor Venn 5'9" | 175 lbs | RB Buford | 2022 State GA , and CJ Clinkscales. So far, Venn has rushed for about 240 yards, while Clinkscales has ran for about 289. Due to the incredible balance of this offense, it has made it very hard for opposing teams to stop them, regardless of how they choose to line up.
Making it even harder for opposing teams to defeat them, is their stellar defense. As mentioned before, the most points they have allowed in one game this season has been 27 points, which is half of the total points that they have allowed all season. On defense, the Wolves have about 13 different players who have double digit tackles this season. The defense has been led in tackles by players such as Aubrey Smith Aubrey Smith 6'2" | 220 lbs | LB Buford | 2022 State GA (30), Victor Payne (25), and Nathan Norys (29). In addition to this, the team also has 5 players who have recorded a single sack this year. This includes, Smith, Japhet Mubenga, Jeremiah McKinzie, Malik Spencer Malik Spencer 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Buford | 2022 State GA , and Isaiah Bond Isaiah Bond 5'10" | 160 lbs | DB Buford | 2022 State GA (who has continued to show that he can perform at a high level on both sides of the ball). With this, the defense has also totaled 2 interceptions so far this year, as KJ Bolden KJ Bolden 6'1" | 185 lbs | WR Buford | 2024 State GA and Jake Pope Jake Pope 6'2" | 195 lbs | ATH Buford | 2022 State GA have each held it down in the secondary.
Needless to say, Buford has been playing at an extremely high level, and it is very exciting to see how their performance has continued to improve week after week. If they can continue to play at this rate, they will see themselves in contention for a state championship. This is definitely the case, especially if they can continue to be balanced on both sides of the ball.
