Byers is one of those freakish athletes who inspires an “I’m not sure where he’s going to line up, but I’m pretty sure he’s going to make an impact” reaction. Already 6’2″, he returned kicks, played in the box, caught 11 passes, and lined up as the deep man in single-high looks. He can dunk, is a standout track athlete, and can hit. His upside is impressive, and he already has the early production to prove that he’s an effective player and not simply a good athlete.
A two-way player, Byers’ biggest impact was as a box safety, and that’s probably where he projects in the future. An athletic player, Byers also runs track and already has great size. His best play this season came as a run defender, but he has the footwork and movement skills to be a high-level man coverage defender.
There’s a bit of a youth movement going on at Kings Mountain, but the Mountaineers are thriving, sitting at 3-0. Byers has been a big part of that, as the freshman is playing a ton of snaps on defense. He’s long and athletic, able to run with faster receivers. He’s shown good ball skills and a vertical that allows him to make plays with the ball in the air.
