The Altus Bulldogs came into the 2024 football season desperate to turn things around and moving in a positive direction. In the previous four seasons combined prior to 2024, the Bulldogs went 2-36 with a pair of winless seasons during that time. The program was hungry to get back to winning records, playoff games and contending for the district title and ultimately the state title. Before you can run, you have to walk and before you walk, you have to crawl. Altus started walking and crawling in 2024. The Bulldogs tripped up a couple times right out of the gate, starting 1-3 but it could have easily been 2-2 or 3-1 as two of those losses were by five points or less. They rattled off back to back wins and then got another district win late in the season. Ultimately, they finished the regular season with a 4-6 record but more importantly, they were 3-4 in district play, one game shy of punching their ticket to the playoffs. All in all, Altus had four games that were decided by five points or less. They went 1-3 in those games. A bounce here or there and the record looks completely different. After going 2-36 in the previous four seasons combined, Altus doubled that win total in 2024 alone. The Bulldogs are indeed moving in the right direction. They came up short on a winning record and making the playoffs but again, they had to crawl and then walk. As 2025 gets ready to kick off, we could see Altus start to run.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Bulldogs come into the 2025 football season with the majority of their starters returning and they also have some young but very talented players coming up that are ready to be instant impact players for Altus this fall. Five starters are back on the offensive side of the ball and the Bulldogs have a terrific collection of skill players returning. But the offensive line is going to be completely rebuilt as they have to replace four offensive linemen and they will have a freshman starting at the quarterback position. Granted, that quarterback has already shown a lot of promise and the ceiling is incredibly high but he's still a freshman with four new starters on the offensive line. That's not an ideal combination. But the skill players are almost all back for an offense that averaged nearly 30 points per game. Defensively, the Bulldogs bring almost everyone back as eight starters return. And just like the offense, the weakness might be on the line of scrimmage as they'll have two new starters on the defensive line. But with eight starters back, we think the Bulldogs are going to be able to improve significantly from the 2024 season. Ultimately, it's going to come down to the district slate. Altus is in the district that also features the two teams that played for the 5A state championship last year. It's going to be competitive but if the Bulldogs can flip some of those close losses into wins, they should be able to punch their ticket to the playoffs for the first time since 2018. The Bulldogs appear to be ready to run this fall.

Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1732289' first='DJ' last='Wilson'] is ready for another run in the Altus offense and he had a terrific junior season last fall. Wilson turned into an absolute workhorse for the Bulldogs, finishing the season with 231 carries for nearly 1,300 yards and nine touchdowns. He also was productive as a receiver out of the backfield. This season, we anticipate Altus to be more balanced and Wilson won't have to average over 20 carries per game but it's a good thing to know that if it's necessary, Wilson can produce at that level. Especially with Altus looking to replace the majority of their offensive line, they are going to need to have guys that they can rely on in the skill department.

Senior wide receiver and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1732291' first='Jamele' last='Alexander'] is another player that produced at an extremely high level last season. Offensively, Alexander would set some records for receiving. He finished with 33 catches for over 700 yards and 11 touchdowns. He's going to come into this season as a guy that can flat out make plays in the passing game. We mentioned earlier in the preview how Altus brings back quite a bit of firepower from their skill position guys and it starts right here. Alexander is a game changer at the wide receiver position and as the Bulldogs work in a freshman at the quarterback position, having a reliable target will be important.

We mentioned earlier in the preview how Altus would be turning to a freshman for their quarterback position. [player_tooltip player_id='1667339' first='Jeymon' last='Reed'] is the freshman rising up this fall and he'll immediately get thrown into the fire. We've gotten a chance to watch Reed in person a handful of times, both in person and on film and he has an immense amount of talent. But like we said earlier, he's still going to be a freshman this fall. But the ceiling is still incredibly high and he's not going to be lacking playmakers around him. And there's the overall athleticism factor that shouldn't go unmentioned. He has real speed in the open field and if a play breaks down, he's going to be able to make something happen.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1667340' first='Khamden' last='Lane'] is primed to have a monster senior season this fall. And it doesn't matter where he lines up on the football field. Offensively, we think that he'll primarily see time at wide receiver but he's just as comfortable lining up at running back. Defensively, Lane has the potential to be a lockdown cornerback and he ended up missing some time due to injury last season. With a full year this fall, he could be one of the more fun athletes to watch in Class 5A. We're also partial to Lane because he really turned heads at our camp back in May. He came up to Tulsa and wanted as much competition as he could get and was incredibly fun to watch.

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - Ardmore
- For the second straight year, the regular season will open for Altus with a match-up against Ardmore. The Tigers are a preseason top ten team in Class 4A heading into this season. Last year, they escaped with a 27-26 win over the Bulldogs and it was their eighth straight win in the series.
Sept. 5th - AT Elk City
- In week one, Altus goes on the road to face Elk City. Last season, the Elks doubled up the Bulldogs, beating them 28-14. It was Elk City's third straight win in the series. Prior to that, Altus had won the previous seven meetings. They look to turn this series around this season.
Sept. 12th - AT Cache
- The non-district slate comes to an end with a road game against Cache in week two. Altus got their first win of the season last year in this match-up, when they beat the Bulldogs 34-23. That win would also snap a five-game losing streak to Cache that started in 2019.
Sept. 26th - El Reno
- District play kicks off for Altus with a home game against El Reno. For Altus, it's an opportunity to take the first real step towards making that return to the playoffs. Last season, they lost to El Reno 36-31. They've also lost six straight in the series and snapping that streak will give them a ton of momentum.
Oct. 3rd - AT Western Heights
- Altus heads to Oklahoma City to face Western Heights in week five. Last season, they would shut out the Jets with a 49-0 victory. That would be their largest margin of victory in 2024. They've also won seven straight games against the Jets, with the last loss coming back in 2007.
Oct. 10th - John Marshall
- The second half of the regular season will begin with a home game against John Marshall in week six. The Bulldogs would roll to a 41-20 victory over the Bears last fall. It was the first meeting between these two teams since 2005. It was also Altus' third win in 2024 after winning just two games in the previous four years.
Oct. 16th - AT Noble
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Altus goes back on the road to face Noble in week seven. Last season, they Bulldogs dropped a 16-14 heartbreaker to the Bears. If the Bulldogs get off to a hot start in district play, they could be very close to locking up a playoff spot with a win here.
Oct. 24th - AT Guthrie
- Altus hits the road again in week eight and they head to historic Jelsma Stadium in Guthrie to take on the Blue Jays. Guthrie won 56-34 last season and it was the first meeting between these two since Altus' championship season in 2015. Guthrie is coming off a 5A Runner Up finish.
Oct. 31st - Lawton
- On a Halloween Friday night in week nine, Altus will host Lawton and it obviously depends on what has happened earlier in the season but this feels like a “win and you're in” game for the Bulldogs. They beat the Wolverines 29-28 last season and they've won the last two meetings in the series.
Nov. 7th - Carl Albert
- In the regular season finale, Altus hosts defending champion and top-ranked Carl Albert. Altus wants to climb back to the top of the 5A mountain but that mountain has been owned by the Titans for the last decade. This is the ultimate measuring stick game to see where Altus stacks up compared to the champs.

Head coach Jeremy Reed is going into his third season as head coach of the Bulldogs. He's had quite the career. A decade ago, he was in his first stint as Altus head coach, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2015 state championship, their first state title since 1971. Following that championship season, he left for Lake Hamilton in Arkansas, only to come back to Oklahoma the following year when the Yukon job opened up. From there, he went up to Kansas to coach college ball before returning to Altus prior to the 2023 season. That 2023 season obviously featured plenty of growing pains and there were even more in 2024 but Reed has already proven that he can win games at a high level at Altus. Although he was only head coach of the Bulldogs for two seasons a decade ago, he turned them into one of the top programs in Class 5A. Now, he has this program going in the right direction and the Bulldogs are excited to kick off the 2025 football season and begin their pursuit of a playoff push.
