Expert Analysis
Paul Gregorian | Prep Redzone Scout
McKenzie checks into our updated rankings as a top 40 player at his position, and sees a uptick in his overall ranking as well to round out the 2025 class. The San Diego signee had one of the better seasons of any Bay Area defender, and is a physical and violent edge player with tremendous technique in the run and pass game and is a high motor guy at all times. He should translate nicely to a true OLB/Edge player at the next level and is a already very polished prospect that has a diverse toolbox heading to the college ranks.

McKenzie checks into our rankings just inside the top 40 at his position and is coming off a stellar senior season for one of the top teams in Northern California. He is a very technically sound player with a strong build and powerful lower body while a true anchor at the point of attack and does a nice job at using his height to his advantage to get underneath blockers and win with a low hat. He also shows an explosive first step to cover vertical ground, quickly sets his hands with inside placement and has an immediate
lockout while keeping blockers away from his chest before violently shedding. He shows good block recognition, can split double teams/reach blocks and has redirect abilities down the line of scrimmage. He currently has one FCS offer from the University of San Diego as a OLB, and does have some position versatility at the next level depending on scheme/level.

McKenzie is an underrated prospect on a team with three D1 defensive linemen. At 6’1” 240 lbs. he’s got a compact and well-balanced build and leads the team in sacks with nine on the season thus far. Size, athleticism, and versatility could allow him to transition well to multiple spots on the DL at the college level. Highly technical with his fundamentals, his hand usage and footwork are efficient with limited wasted movement. Aggressive and violent at the contact point, he’s able to overpower opponents with good use of leverage and contact balance. Disrupts plays with his combination of speed, power, and technique. Picked up his first D1 offer from San Diego in September and also holds a handful of D3 offers. Expect his recruitment to rise going forward.

McKenzie is off to a tremendous start for one of the top teams in Northern California and is a very technically sound edge rusher that does a great job at using his leverage and violent hands at a point of attack. He shows quick block recognition, good backside pursuit, and has a variety of speed and power pass rush moves in his toolbox. Overall, he is one of the more balanced edge prospects in the Bay Area and has been flying under the radar for most of his prep career. He recently picked up his first offer from USD, and it would not be surprising if other FCS schools came in late and offered the talented edge rusher.
