<span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>THIS WEEK’S TOP STORIES</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Clifton’s Power Five Offer Week</strong></span>
One of the top emerging 2022 linebackers this offseason has been Owasso’s [player_tooltip player_id="101403" first="Jake" last="Clifton"]. He was part of a linebacker group that featured stud 2021 prospects [player_tooltip player_id="38516" first="Emaud" last="Triplett"] and [player_tooltip player_id="45655" first="Brenden" last="Dye"]. Most of the attention was focused on them last season and because of that, Clifton somewhat slipped through the cracks. Not anymore! He has been a very busy prospect this offseason, picking up offers from college programs all over the country. In the last week, he picked up offers from the Big Ten and SEC when Illiniois and Missouri each offered him.
Clifton is a linebacker on the rise and similar to other 2022 prospects like him, this spring and summer will be great for him to get more attention and in front of even more colleges. With Triplett and Dye graduating, Clifton will be the top dog at the linebacker position for Owasso going into the 2021 season and that Owasso defense is full of some absolute stars. You have to start including Clifton in those conversations.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Dual-Sport Offer For Mustang’s Johnson</strong></span>
One of the top athletes in Oklahoma’s 2023 class is Mustang standout [player_tooltip player_id="38777" first="Jacobe" last="Johnson"]. And when we say athlete, we’re not talking about how he plays both sides of the ball. Johnson is one of the best football prospects in the state and he’s also one of the best basketball prospects in the state. Johnson has several colleges pursuing him in both sports and last week he picked up another dual-sport offer. Stanford is the latest program to offer him on the hardwood as well as the gridiron in the same day.
Since the introduction of our 2023 rankings, Johnson has been the highest rated prospect in the class for football. He’s also highly rated in the 2023 basketball rankings as well. From previous conversations, Johnson seems to be a football first prospect and will eventually focus on football at the next level. However, he still has two years of high school ball before he has to make that decision.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>First Offers Come In For State’s Top 2023 Quarterback</strong></span>
Choctaw 2023 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"] has been considered the state’s top quarterback in the 2023 class before he even took over as Choctaw’s starting quarterback in 2020. He helped lead them to the state championship game in his first year and grew as a quarterback every single week. He’s only continued that growth this offseason and he finally picked up his first offers and they were well deserved for the Yellowjacket quarterback. First, it was Virginia Tech offering Wasel and Tulsa soon followed with an offer of their own.
This could end up opening the flood gates with spring ball right around the corner, team camps and passing leagues in early June. More colleges will get a chance to see Wasel and he’s hearing from college programs all over the country. Wasel has a chance to be up there on a list of elite quarterbacks to come out of Oklahoma within the last decade or two. The offers from Virginia Tech and Tulsa are just the beginning.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Rowe Announces Commitment To Oklahoma</strong></span>
Our final top story is the biggest news of the week as Union 2022 defensive back [player_tooltip player_id="61138" first="Jayden" last="Rowe"] tweeted out that he has committed to Oklahoma. Rowe, similar to several other 2022 prospects has been on fire this offseason, picking up offers from all over the country after a stellar junior season. The combination of size and elite speed had college programs intrigued by Rowe and OU pulled the trigger on offering the Union standout earlier this offseason. On Friday, Rowe announced that he would be a Sooner commit. This continues the somewhat pipeline of Union defensive backs heading to Norman.
Tre Brown, a former Union standout just finished his OU career and was drafted by Seattle over the weekend. Another former Union standout is Pat Fields, who has been a big part of the OU secondary in the last two seasons. Rowe is the next Union standout heading down to Norman. Rowe is more similar to Brown where they both play corner and they’re both some of the fastest prospects in the state. Rowe has been putting out lightning fast times in track this spring, similar to Brown several years ago. The good thing for Rowe is he’s a few inches taller than Brown and still has that elite speed that only a few guys have.
Rowe is the ninth prospect in Oklahoma’s 2022 class to announce a verbal commitment. Out of the nine prospects, OU now has commitments from two of them with Union’s Rowe and Edmond Santa Fe wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="38667" first="Talyn" last="Shettron"]. However, they’re in the hunt for several other top prospects and that number can certainly go up over the next few months.
