Expert Analysis
Matthew Layton | Prep Redzone Scout
University’s passing attack has been red hot through the first three weeks, and 2027 QB Harrison Helbig has been at the center of it, putting himself into serious early Kennedy and House Award consideration. Helbig has accounted for 950 total yards and 15 touchdowns against just one interception, following up a strong junior season with an even bigger jump as a senior. Helbig is also utilizing his legs more this year, which has added another element to his game by keeping defenses honest and allowing him to extend plays when plays break down. He has some talented playmakers around him, but Helbig has made life easier for them with tremendous accuracy and confidence when delivering the ball. If he can maintain this level of play throughout the season, Helbig makes the Hawks a legitimate title contender.

284 yards passing – 68 yards rushing – 4 touchdowns
Harrison Helbig picked up right where he left off from a big junior season, leading University to a 35-3 win over Musselman with 284 yards passing, 68 yards rushing and four total touchdowns. The 2027 quarterback showed off more of his athleticism as a runner in Week 1, doing a good job escaping the pocket, extending plays and picking up chunk yardage when plays broke down. Helbig is not a true dual-threat, but his ability to scramble and make throws on the run gave the Musselman defense another element to account for alongside University’s explosive passing attack. It was a strong start to his senior season, and another element of his game to look at that makes Helbig one of the top quarterbacks in the state.

RETURNING STANDOUT
University returns one of the state’s top quarterbacks in 2027 QB Harrison Helbig, who is coming off a breakout junior campaign. Helbig has climbed to the #1 QB ranking in West Virginia’s 2027 class and recently picked up his first D1 offer from Morgan State, with more schools likely to get involved this fall. He gives the Hawks an experienced leader behind center and someone the offense can rely on to keep the passing game productive. Having a quarterback with his experience and ability back under center is a major reason University enters the season with championship expectations.

lit up The Bridge sports complex on Sunday. Harrison stands out physically with a taller frame that fits the “prototypical” measurements college coaches will seek at 6’3″ and 215 pounds. Harrison projects as a calm pocket passer who can stand in the pocket and deliver quick, efficient strikes to all levels of the field. Given the limited opposing defense (1v1s), Helbig still showed that he can analyze how the defender is covering his receiver and deliver the ball to a spot where he can go up to snag it. Great footwork to maneuver the pocket and avoid the pass rush. Solid arm strength allows Harrison to not just push the ball deep but do so with zip and accuracy. Harrison also posted some solid numbers in the combine with a 7.38 L-drill and an 8’9″ broad jump. Harrison has the potential to rise up more D1

2027 QB Harrison Helbig heads into the WV Exposure Series with plenty of momentum after a massive junior season at University. Currently holding the #1 QB spot in the 2027 class, Helbig has continued elevating his game and looks poised for another big season. Helbig should be right in the middle of the battle for QB MVP honors alongside some of the other top signal callers in attendance. With the way his game has progressed, it also feels like D1 attention could start ramping up sooner rather than later.

has the kind of frame you want to build around in a college program. At 6’4 205, he carries himself well in the pocket and plays with a natural presence that shows up snap after snap. He sees the field clearly, especially working between the hashes, and isn’t bothered when bodies start closing in. There’s a steadiness to Helbig when pressure arrives, able to hold his spot and deliver strikes without losing control. It’s a functional trait that supports his production and gives him a strong foundation as he continues to develop.

has shown why he’s regarded as one of the state’s top signal-callers. Now fully established as the Hawks’ starting quarterback, Helbig has demonstrated his ability to make plays in both the passing and running game. While there’s still room to refine his mechanics, his natural talent and athleticism have been on display, and his performance in the postseason will be key to realizing his high ceiling as a top-tier prospect.

continues to make his case for the top spot in the quarterback rankings this season for the Hawks. He made quick work of the Parkersburg defense, throwing for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns while adding two more scores with his legs. The junior gunslinger has elevated his game this season and has his team in the quarterfinals with a big matchup with Huntington next. Helbig continues to flash the high-level potential we’ve seen in him since beginning to emerge last season and should have college suitors coming after him soon.

is vying for that top spot this season and has done some good things through the first three weeks. He’s capable of elevating his game further, but this is his first season as the full-time starter and going into the year as QB1. Helbig is still raw in some areas, but the natural ability and potential are evident in his game if he can continue to fine-tune his fundamentals. The ceiling is very high for him as a player and prospect, and he’s shown flashes of it so far this season for the Hawks.
