Over the past few weeks, I have been looking back at some of the top players from this past season by releasing my 2023 All-State teams in each class. With classes 2A-6A out of the way, I will finish off my All-State teams with class 1A, starting with the offensive side of the ball.
Luke Pennington Luke Pennington 6’0″ | 180 lbs | QB Sayre School | 2025 State KY came into this season with high expectations and exceeded them in impressive fashion. He finished his junior year completing 171/252 passes for 2,555 yards, 50 touchdowns, and zero interceptions in 13 games. Pennington has a strong arm which he is able to use to lead his receivers down the field in the deep passing game. He has also shown impressive ball placement, putting the ball where only his intended receiver can catch it. Luke also finished the season with one rushing touchdown. While he doesn’t currently hold any offers, I expect some to come his way going into his senior year as he has received some college interest and definitely has the talent to play quarterback at the next level.
Highlights
Tyson Martin
Tyson Martin
Tyson Martin is a player that jumped onto my radar this season. The sophomore running back had a very impressive 2023 season, carrying the ball 130 times for 1,319 yards and 18 touchdowns in 10 games. Martin is a physical ball carrier that has shown the strength/contact balance to run straight through defenders without breaking stride. He has also shown the speed to run away from the defense once he hits the open field. Martin also caught eight passes for 124 yards, threw one passing touchdown, and returned three kickoffs first touchdowns this season. He also played a key role on defense at linebacker, finishing the season with 87 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries returned for touchdowns. Martin doesn’t currently hold any offers but is definitely a player for college coaches to keep an eye on over the next couple seasons.
After catching my attention on defense last season, Brenden Anthony Brenden Anthony 5’11” | 210 lbs | ATH Pikeville | 2025 State KY played an even bigger role on offense in 2023. He played a big role in Pikeville’s 1A State Championship run, carrying the ball 137 times for 1,418 yards and 19 touchdowns in 12 games. Anthony is a hard runner that does a great job of lowering his shoulder and breaking tackles without losing stride. He also has shown the ability to hit a second gear to break off on long runs once he hits the open field. Anthony also caught one touchdown pass and threw a touchdown this season. He also continued to impress on defense at linebacker, finishing the season with 115 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, one sack, and an interception which he returned for a touchdown. Anthony finished the season on a high note as he was named the MVP of the 1A State Championship Game. Brenden doesn’t currently hold any offers but I expect some to come his way going into his senior season as he has received some college interest and has the talent to play on either side of the ball at the next level.

Coffman is a very dangerous deep threat as he is able to use his speed to blow by opposing defensive backs. He is also a very skilled route runner, using smooth breaks in his routes to create separation. Coffman is also electric after the catch, as he has shown the ability to use his speed and elusiveness to turn short passes into big gains. Brock also returned one punt for a touchdown, and played a key role on defense as a defensive back this season, coming away with nine interceptions and returning one for a touchdown while also returning one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Coffman currently holds offers from Maryland and Eastern Kentucky, and I expect more to come his way as he is a Power 5 caliber prospect.

Webb finished his junior year as his team’s leading receiver, catching 24 passes for 605 yards and nine touchdowns in 12 games. Elijah has very explosive speed which he is able to use to blow by opposing defensive backs in the deep passing game and also turn short passes into big gains once he hits the open field. Mason Neff Mason Neff 6’4″ | 265 lbs | OL Newport Central Catholic | 2024 State KY is an offensive lineman that has been high on my radar for a while now and continued to impress this season. Neff lined up at guard where he was very impressive as a run blocker. He showed the ability to pull and pick up blocks in the open field, taking any defender in his path out of the picture. Neff also showed the ability to run his feet through contact to drive his man down the field. Mason currently holds multiple college offers and I expect him to become a key piece of the offensive line unit wherever he decides to play at the next level.
