We're breaking down some of the best games on the schedule, taking a closer look at the key matchups, players to watch, and what each result could mean moving forward. These are the games that have our attention heading into another big Friday night.

HERBERT HOOVER AT SOUTH CHARLESTON

The Game: The much-anticipated Kanawha Valley matchup is finally here, and expect plenty of fireworks and emotion when these two teams take the field. The social media fodder has been building since the offseason, with both programs bolstering their rosters with transfers from surrounding schools, and the pregame smack talk has only continued to ramp up this week. These are two teams that know each other well and clearly don't like each other, which should make for a big-time atmosphere tonight. Hoover rolled to a 48-6 win over South Charleston last season, but this is a much different Black Eagles roster, and I expect a far more competitive matchup this time around. There's going to be a lot of talent on the field, and if you recruit West Virginia, you better be there tonight.

Keys to the Game: Both teams have to keep their emotions in check and avoid unnecessary penalties that can come with a game carrying this much hype. South Charleston learned that lesson against George Washington, where losing focus and allowing emotions to take over hurt the Black Eagles in the big loss. If they've learned from that experience, they should be better prepared for the atmosphere tonight. Hoover will need the same discipline in what should be a highly competitive game and rowdy environment.

Matchup to Watch: Containing the running game will be critical for both defenses. Hoover and South Charleston have each found plenty of success on the ground, and there's D1 talent on both sides with Hoover's [player_tooltip player_id='1155316' first='David' last='Robinson Jr']. and South Charleston's [player_tooltip player_id='1309691' first='Malakhi' last='Hope'], if healthy, and [player_tooltip player_id='1309678' first='Trevaun' last='Tyson']. Both teams also have dual-threat quarterbacks in [player_tooltip player_id='1166650' first='Peyton' last='Grigsby'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1624345' first='Ceno' last='Riley'], adding another layer to the challenge for each defense. The Herbert Hoover front will face its biggest test of the season against South Charleston, but the Huskies are more balanced offensively and have a loaded receiver group they can turn to if the Black Eagles win the battle up front.

Score Prediction: Herbert Hoover 35 South Charleston 28

RIPLEY AT BROOKE

The Game: Big playoff points are on the line tonight with the early #7 Ripley Vikings traveling to #11 Brooke in a matchup that could have a major impact on each team's playoff fate. The Bruins have won the last two meetings convincingly, but these teams haven't faced each other since 2023 and haven't made the playoffs since 2015. Brooke is coming off a statement win over Beaver Local (OH) that opened some eyes around the Northern Panhandle, while Ripley has won four straight games in dominating fashion. This is a very close matchup on paper, and both teams should get a great test tonight.

Keys to the Game: This could be a contrast in styles, with Ripley leaning heavily on a ground-and-pound attack that has produced five players with over 100 rushing yards on the season, led by 2028 RB Jordan Adkins. Senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='2221286' first='Jackson' last='Moore'] is more than capable of making teams pay through the air, giving the Vikings some balance if needed. Brooke has a breakout sophomore quarterback in [player_tooltip player_id='1716397' first='Kamden' last='Sperringer'] and several big targets on the outside in [player_tooltip player_id='2220780' first='Grant' last='Yost'], [player_tooltip player_id='2370488' first='Bryden' last='Horstin'], and a now-healthy [player_tooltip player_id='1221855' first='Crosby' last='Morris'], but the Bruins can also run the football effectively. Whichever defense can force the opposing offense away from what it does best could have a major advantage.

Matchup to Watch: How Ripley handles Brooke's size in the passing game will be a major storyline tonight. The Bruins have three talented receivers standing over 6'3, including the 6'6 Morris, creating some difficult matchups for the Vikings' defensive backs. Pair that size with a young gunslinger at quarterback, and the Vikings will have their hands full in coverage. On the other side, Brooke will have to match Ripley's physicality up front, where the Vikings have paved running lanes for a prolific ground game to date.

Score Prediction: Brooke 34 Ripley 28

PIKEVIEW AT SISSONVILLE

The Game: PikeView made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years last season and knocked off Sissonville 54-29 along the way, but the Indians have a much different feel heading into this matchup. Sissonville narrowly missed the postseason last year, but the “Cardiac Kids” are off to their best start since 1994 at 5-0 and are looking to finally get over the playoff hump after coming up short in recent years. PikeView's Wing-T and physical style gave the Indians fits last season, but Sissonville should be better equipped to handle that challenge this time around. The Indians are the favorite on paper, but this is another important test for a team that has been finding ways to win all season.

Keys to the Game: Sissonville will need to be better prepared for PikeView's physical style, particularly in the trenches. The Indians have a big offensive and defensive line that should match up much better this year after several of those players were underclassmen when these teams met last season. For PikeView, generating more offense will be critical after the Panthers have struggled to consistently put points on the board over the last three weeks. If they can control the tempo with the Wing-T and make Sissonville work for every possession, they can keep themselves in the game.

Matchup to Watch: Sissonville has developed a knack for winning close games this season, with several late-game comebacks and dramatic finishes keeping the Indians undefeated. That could come into play again if PikeView is able to defend well, shorten the game, and control the clock with its Wing-T attack. Sissonville can be explosive through the air, and the Panthers will need to find a way to slow down that part of the offense if they want to pull off another big win. A victory tonight would go a long way toward both teams making the playoffs.

Score Prediction: Sissonville 28 PikeView 14

TUG VALLEY AT SHERMAN

The Game: This is a huge Class A matchup to follow closely tonight with two Top 5 teams going head-to-head. Tug Valley rolled past Sherman 51-16 last year, so the Tide will have revenge on their minds when these teams meet again. Both programs have been battle-tested already, playing up in competition in several games, but this is the type of matchup that can tell us a lot about where each team stands. With two highly ranked teams meeting this early, tonight should go a long way toward identifying which program has a legitimate shot at contending for a state title.

Keys to the Game: Expect explosive offense from both sides, as each team has the firepower to put points on the board in a hurry. That makes defensive stops even more important, because neither team wants this turning into a game where whoever has the ball last comes away with the win. Tug Valley QB [player_tooltip player_id='1154693' first='Preston' last='May'] and Sherman QB [player_tooltip player_id='1272608' first='Eli' last='Pauley'] have been two of the top passers in the state through the midway point of the season, and both are senior veterans who have game-changing ability. Whichever defense can find a way to slow down the opposing quarterback could end up making the difference in what should be a high-scoring battle.

Matchup to Watch: Two of the better receivers in Class A will be on the field tonight with Tug Valley's [player_tooltip player_id='1145831' first='Cameron' last='Slone'] and Sherman's [player_tooltip player_id='1624375' first='Chase' last='Southern'] going head-to-head. Slone may be the leading receiver in the state right now, while Southern is a talented target for the Tide in his own right, and there's even a chance the two could line up across from each other at times as two-way players. Both quarterbacks are also dangerous dual-threats, and whichever defense can do a better job containing the opposing quarterback could have the edge in what should be a highly competitive game.

Score Prediction: Tug Valley 42 Sherman 32
