The second half of the regular season kicks off this week and the hunt for district championships, favorable playoff seeding and a spot in the playoffs in general really heat up. This week, we're taking a look at each class with a breakdown on the midseason MVP, favorites to win it all and much more! We continue this evening with Class 6A-2 Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma for more midseason reports on each class!

THE FAVORITES

Choctaw Yellowjackets

Choctaw has won four straight games and they look more and more like the team we thought they could be in the preseason. They dropped two tough games to 6A-1 opponents to open the season but have looked really good ever since then. The Yellowjackets are searching for their third consecutive state championship game appearance this season and on paper, they have the firepower that can get it done. And if last year taught us anything about this program, they can take different paths to find their way to Edmond in the end so this is a team that will be in the mix.

Piedmont Wildcats

Is this the year where Piedmont finally breaks through and gets the job done in the postseason? They are a top four team and have been that all season. This week will possibly give us the answer to that first question but more on that later on in this breakdown. Piedmont is a similar story to Choctaw where their losses early this season were to 6A-1 opponents. And we've mentioned this before but Class 6A-2 has become the ultimate class of parity with four different state champions in the last four years. Piedmont is hopeful that they become the fifth different champ.

Sand Springs Sandites

Sand Springs is in one of the more unique positions for any team categorized as a favorite at this point of the year. They are 1-3 on the season and haven't played in the last two weeks. But we knew going into the season that the Sandites were facing a tough and unique early schedule that should help them as they enter district play this week. The Sandites haven't played a team in their own class all season. Now that begins this week with a game against Bartlesville. The defending champion Sandites are still a team that you need to take seriously in this 6A-2 title hunt.

Stillwater Pioneers

On paper, Stillwater feels like the top team in Class 6A-2 and that's why we've had them in the top spot for the last month. But similar to Sand Springs, the Pioneers haven't played another 6A-2 opponent all year so it's hard to compare them to the other top teams in this class. They also haven't played at home in well over a month but both of those things change this week when they host Ponca City Friday night. The Pioneers are experienced and hungry and certainly have a team that is capable of making a run to Edmond and capturing another state title.

THE DARK HORSE

Booker T Washington Hornets

In 6A-2 football over the past three or four years, this has been a class of parity but also a top-heavy class. Teams outside of the top four have had a hard time breaking through. But Booker T Washington isn't your typical team "on the outside" as they are a top five squad. Like several of the teams categorized as "favorites" here, the Hornets haven't played another 6A-2 opponent all year and we'll learn more about them in the next month. But let's face it, this is Booker T Washington and they aren't going to back down from anyone and have the talent to make plenty of noise.

MIDSEASON MVP

[player_tooltip player_id='700412' first='Peyton' last='Campbell'] - 2027 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back - Stillwater

This one was tough because we feel like all of the top teams in this class are all bunched together with not a lot of separation between them. But we're going with senior [player_tooltip player_id='700412' first='Peyton' last='Campbell'] from the top-ranked Pioneers here. Campbell came into this season as one of the better athletes in 6A-2 although he was known mostly for his work on the defensive side of the ball. He's emerged as one of their top pass catchers this season and is a player that you would categorize as a "winning player" as this guy makes his team better in just about every way. As the Pioneers enter district play this week, we think that Campbell will step his game up and help Stillwater separate themselves from the pack.

MIDSEASON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

[player_tooltip player_id='1035103' first='Titus' last='Hawk'] - 2027 Tight End

Similar to MVP, there were plenty of candidates here to pick but we're going with Choctaw senior [player_tooltip player_id='1035103' first='Titus' last='Hawk'] because of the way he's expanded his role on the offensive side of the ball for the Yellowjackets. Hawk is considered one of the better tight ends in this part of the country and has routinely had some of his best performances in the biggest games. But this year, the Yellowjackets are finding new ways to put the ball in his hands and he's delivering. In short yardage situations, they're having Hawk take direct snaps and he's been able to make plays. He's one of the best overall athletes in Oklahoma, as a two-sport commit to Notre Dame. But Hawk has taken another step forward as a offensive playmaker.

MIDSEASON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

[player_tooltip player_id='473952' first='Joseph' last='Graves'] - 2027 Defensive Lineman

When it was announced this summer that senior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='473952' first='Joseph' last='Graves'] was returning home to Booker T Washington after spending last year at IMG Academy, there was a ton of excitement around north Tulsa. Not so much around the rest of Class 6A-2. Graves is an absolute monster on the defensive line and he's picked up right where he left off, when he was an All State selection as a sophomore. Graves has been terrorizing opposing offensive lines all season and making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. Graves and the Hornets now look to continue that momentum into district play this week. We mentioned the Hornets as a dark horse in the 6A-2 race and Graves is a big reason why.

GAMES TO CIRCLE

Choctaw AT Piedmont - Week Six

Only two of the top six teams in our 6A-2 rankings are from the west side district and that's Choctaw and Piedmont. So it goes without saying but we believe this week's clash between the Wildcats and Yellowjackets will be for the district championship. It also features two teams that are more than capable of making a run in November. Choctaw certainly has the experience of contending for state championships while Piedmont is still knocking on the door and looking to kick that door down. The winner of this game will capture the district title and have a more favorable path in the playoffs. But with how even the top of this class looks right now, it's all going to come down to who's playing the best in November.

Stillwater AT Sand Springs - Week Seven

While Choctaw and Piedmont are the 6A-2 main event this week, that focus will shift to the east side of the state when top-ranked Stillwater goes on the road to face number three Sand Springs. On paper, this looks like it will decide the district title but there are plenty of other teams in this district that will have something to say about that. Both of these teams have championship pedigree and expect to make a trip to Edmond in December. But just like with the Choctaw-Piedmont match-up, this is only one step to get there. While the winner will be in a more advantageous position, we could see either of these teams go on a run in November and end up in Edmond, no matter who wins this game next week.
