We're officially back, and Week 1 brings several quarterback matchups worth keeping an eye on. It's early, but these games can give us a good first look at how these quarterbacks respond when the lights come on and the competition gets real.

QB Duel: [player_tooltip player_id='690863' first='Myles' last='McDonald'] (Carrollwood Day) vs. [player_tooltip player_id='736787' first='Joseph' last='Allen'] (Eau Gallie)

Few quarterbacks on this list have been evaluated in more competitive settings than [player_tooltip player_id='690863' first='Myles' last='McDonald']. Over the past several years, I've watched McDonald compete at college camps, 7v7 tournaments, showcases, QB House training sessions and Friday nights. Regardless of the setting, his performance has remained remarkably consistent. McDonald throws one of the prettiest spirals in the state and has more than enough arm strength to attack every route in the playbook. His mechanics are polished, his decision-making continues to improve, and he has the mobility to escape pressure when necessary. On the other side, [player_tooltip player_id='736787' first='Joseph' last='Allen'] returns as one of the more intriguing quarterbacks in the state after missing much of last season due to injury. The Towson commit has consistently shown he can compete with anyone in this class when healthy. He's a confident passer with a quick release, good anticipation and enough arm strength to attack every area of the field. Both quarterbacks bring experience and plenty of talent into this matchup.

QB Duel: Kehber Nijher (Armwood) vs. [player_tooltip player_id='2228632' first='Antonio' last='Balaguer'] (Lennard)

Kehber Nijher has established himself as one of Florida's premier young quarterbacks and remains high on my 2029 QB list. The rising sophomore has consistently displayed advanced poise, effortless arm talent and clean mechanics that allow him to drive the football with impressive velocity. His command of an offense and leadership qualities stand out well beyond his age. After years of dominating on the 7-on-7 circuit, the spotlight now shifts to Friday nights. Lennard counters with [player_tooltip player_id='2228632' first='Antonio' last='Balaguer'], who brings an exciting dual-threat skill set after throwing for more than 3,100 yards over the past two seasons at Sumner. He's fearless standing in the pocket, willing to absorb contact to deliver throws downfield, while also possessing the instincts and mobility to extend plays outside the pocket. Last season, he completed 82-of-132 passes for 1,298 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 164 rushing yards and a score on the ground. This is an interesting contrast between a highly touted young quarterback and an experienced playmaker looking to make an immediate impact at Lennard.

QB Duel: [player_tooltip player_id='1841861' first='Blake' last='McCullough'] (Bishop Moore) vs. Richard Roundtree (Hawthorne)

Few quarterbacks in Florida have matched [player_tooltip player_id='1841861' first='Blake' last='McCullough']'s production. After throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 34 touchdowns while leading Bishop Moore on a deep playoff run, he's proven he can produce in big moments. His efficiency, football IQ and ability to keep an offense on schedule make him one of the state's most dependable quarterbacks entering his junior season. Hawthorne's Richard Roundtree enters the season as one of the hotter names in the region. He gained momentum throughout the spring and carried it into a productive camp circuit. Roundtree distributes the football efficiently, plays under control and has continued earning recruiting attention with each evaluation. Bishop Moore enters with plenty of expectations, while Hawthorne has a young group looking to prove it belongs in games like this. This gives both quarterbacks an early opportunity to make a statement.

QB Duel: [player_tooltip player_id='2198028' first='Andrew' last='Whittemore'] (Buchholz) vs. Terrence Lewis (Vanguard)

[player_tooltip player_id='2198028' first='Andrew' last='Whittemore'] continues to trend upward heading into the season. He's shown maturity, accuracy and the ability to stay composed in high-pressure situations. What stands out most is how comfortable he looks operating the offense. He may not always generate the same headlines as some others, but coaches continue paying attention. Vanguard brings plenty of experience on the other side with Georgia Southern commit Terrence Lewis. One of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the state, Lewis has the ability to impact the game with both his arm and legs. His experience stands out, but so does his ability to galvanize his teammates and fans. Buchholz and Vanguard are both loaded with talent, and this matchup could come down to which quarterback is able to consistently make the right plays when the game gets tight.

QB Duel: [player_tooltip player_id='1895080' first='Khayse' last='Barrett'] (Clearwater Central Catholic) vs. [player_tooltip player_id='2336246' first='Matthew' last='Hennesey'] (Palmetto)

[player_tooltip player_id='1895080' first='Khayse' last='Barrett'] continues to benefit from valuable live reps against quality competition, and the development is showing. The physical tools are evident with his size, mobility and ability to create outside of structure, but the biggest strides have come as a passer. He's becoming more comfortable working through progressions, staying composed under pressure and consistently stacking accurate throws. Palmetto's [player_tooltip player_id='2336246' first='Matthew' last='Hennesey'] brings plenty of intrigue of his own. Now standing around 6-4, the rising quarterback continues to add intrigue with his size, arm talent and overall upside. The Tigers feature one of the area's more explosive offenses with plenty of weapons around him, giving Hennesey every opportunity to put together a big junior campaign. Looking back, Palmetto probably deserved a spot in my preseason Top 10 with the talent this roster brings to the table. This should be one of the better quarterback matchups on the West Side in Week 1.
