We're officially back. Friday nights are here, and Week 1 brings a loaded slate across the state with several programs looking to make an early statement. From heavyweight matchups to potential sleepers, there's plenty of talent and storylines to keep an eye on.

Carrollwood Day vs. Eau Gallie

Two of the more respected programs in their respective areas meet right away as Carrollwood Day takes on Eau Gallie. Carrollwood Day is coming off a 12-2 season and remains one of the top small-school programs in the Tampa area, while Eau Gallie reached the 3A state quarterfinals last season. Both programs have plenty of expectations entering 2026, making this a strong early measuring stick for each side.

Carrollwood Day: QB [player_tooltip player_id='690863' first='Myles' last='McDonald'], RB [player_tooltip player_id='1073722' first='Kameron' last='Battle'], WR Derrell Hines, DL [player_tooltip player_id='963368' first='Zylen' last='Little']

Eau Gallie: QB [player_tooltip player_id='736787' first='Joseph' last='Allen'], ATH X'Zavier Corbin, ATH [player_tooltip player_id='2141004' first='Captain' last='Rolle'], LB [player_tooltip player_id='2197964' first='Gabriel' last='Player']

Armwood vs. Lennard

This is the sleeper matchup on the West Side. Armwood enters the season coming off a 13-1 campaign that ended in the 6A state semifinals, and the Hawks have plenty of talent returning. Lennard enters with something to prove and a chip on its shoulder. For Armwood, this is about setting the tone from the opening week and showing that it remains one of the area's top programs.

Bishop Moore vs. Hawthorne

Bishop Moore looks loaded once again and enters the season with legitimate championship expectations. Hawthorne could have a tough time keeping pace, but there is plenty of young talent coming through the program after gaining experience in the Rural ranks. If Hawthorne can hang around early, this could become an interesting matchup as the younger players get an opportunity to test themselves against one of Central Florida's top programs.

Vanguard vs. Buchholz

Wow. This is a battle of North Central Florida programs with talent all over the field. Buchholz is coming off a 12-2 season and got past Vanguard 15-13 in last year's matchup. Vanguard finished 9-3 and reached the regional final. Both programs expect to be in the postseason mix again, and with D-I talent scattered throughout both rosters, this should be one of the better games of the night.

Buchholz: QB [player_tooltip player_id='2198028' first='Andrew' last='Whittemore'], ATH Cameron Burse, Entire O-Line

Clearwater Central Catholic vs. Palmetto

This is one of the top games on the West Side. Both CCC and Palmetto are programs I have ranked inside my top 10 for the Tampa-SWFL area, and both have plenty of talent capable of making an impact. Palmetto went 10-2 last season, while CCC continues to build around a roster with college-level talent. Getting an early matchup like this should give us a good idea of where both programs stand.

Palmetto: QB Matthew Hennessy

Venice at Rabun Gap

Venice isn't afraid of anybody. The Indians are taking the show on the road to Georgia for a matchup against Rabun Gap, adding a different type of challenge to the schedule. Venice enters the season with major expectations and has continued to schedule aggressively. Now the Indians will pack the bags and head north for an early-season test against a respected Rabun Gap program.

Players to Watch

Venice: ATH Tyree Mannings, QB Noah Patton, RB Ira Dell, RB Dorian Jones

Carol City at Mainland

This is one of the biggest games in the state. Carol City has been one of the hottest programs in the country throughout the offseason and now gets an opportunity to back up all the buzz against Mainland. The Buccaneers and Coach Squatty Bell will welcome the Chiefs to Daytona Beach for what should be a physical matchup. Carol City has plenty of attention surrounding the program, but Mainland has an opportunity to make a statement of its own at home.
