One of my favorite groups of players during our rankings updates is the watchlist-to-ranked group. These are the players who showed enough potential early in their careers to get on our radar, but have only recently broken through. Since this was an offseason update, we only had eight players move from our watchlist to the rankings, but each one deserves recognition. Let's break them all down.

Mallard Creek's offensive line is loaded with Power Four talent, so when Coach Tinsley singled out Smith as a key player, we listened. He had a strong showing at a North Carolina Central prospect camp this offseason, showing surprising quickness for a 300-pounder. He's a guard in Mallard Creek's offense, but has the length to move out to tackle if needed.

Melton wasn't Option No. 1 for Crest last year, but he was quite successful when he got the ball. He had almost 400 receiving yards and four touchdowns, while also averaging over 15 yards per carry on a handful of touches. He played some quarterback, too, completing all nine of his pass attempts and tossing a touchdown. He's a true do-it-all guy who should see his volume increase as a senior.

Devaughan just missed our last rankings update, as I looked at his junior film right after we published in May. He's a two-way player who showed promise at tight end, both in-line and as an H-Back. He's physical in the running game and flashed a surprisingly robust route tree.

Gant will be a key piece for the Cougars this season. Last year, he primarily contributed as a receiver, catching 17 passes in six games while adding a handful of carries. We expect him to play both ways this year, and safety may actually be his best position. This is an upside ranking as we think he could have a strong start to the year.

We typically don't add quarterbacks to the rankings ahead of the season, but made an exception for Sarver after he started to gain some recruiting traction this offseason. He impressed earlier this offseason, and we had him penciled in as the starter at South Iredell before he transferred to Pine Lake Prep. We expect a big year from the Pride quarterback.

Towson has been on our radar for a couple of years and we probably should have added him to the rankings sooner. The Harnett Central back averaged over seven yards a carry on around 100 carries last season and showed himself to be a good receiver out of the backfield. The Trojans lost a few receivers this year, so Towson and the ground game could see an increased workload.

The Union Pines coaches have been high of Romine for several years, but we haven't seen a lot of him due to the depth at the defensive end position and some injuries. Now, it looks like he's going to be a huge piece on the Vikings' defense, and he's a guy who could explode as a senior.

Especially at the offensive line position, we sometimes miss guys. Bova was a high-level performer playing out of position at right tackle last year for the Vikings. He's aggressive as a pass-blocker, something I love to see, because it's easy for guys to be passive there. We think he's best suited for the guard position, and he's someone who should get some late interest from colleges.
