The Lawton Wolverines came into the 2025 season looking to build momentum after making it to the playoffs in 2024. But it had been a couple seasons since they had a winning record. And 2025 was the perfect example of why you can't lose the wrong games in district play. In 2024, they finished the regular season with a 4-6 record but punched their ticket to the playoffs with the right wins. In 2025, they went 4-6 but lost those games and were on the outside looking in on the postseason. It was a tale of two halves in the 2025 season. Lawton ended up being very streaky in 2025. They won their first two games with ease but then dropped two straight, including the district opener. But they bounced back with two straight wins so they went into the final four weeks with a 4-2 record. They dropped a tough 30-22 game to El Reno in week seven and the wheels came off from there. They lost their last three games to Carl Albert, Altus and Guthrie with all three losses coming by 40+ points. The season came to an end with a 4-6 record and the Wolverines missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. But as the page turns to the 2026 season and we're just a few weeks away from kickoff, there is reason to be very optimistic about what the 2026 Wolverines will look like and what kind of fight they'll have this fall.

2026 OUTLOOK

Despite missing the playoffs last season, the Wolverines come into this season feeling like one of the dark horses in Class 5A that we should be talking about more. Lawton brings back almost everyone from last year's team. 20 starters in total return and the offense has the potential to be one of the more improved units in Class 5A football this season. Nine starters return on offense but realistically they have ten starters with experience as they have a new quarterback that started elsewhere in Oklahoma last season. Last season, the Wolverines averaged a little over 20 points per game. We think that number could go up in a major way this season with the experience and overall talent they have all over the place. Defensively, Lawton brings back all eleven starters from last year's team. Just like with the offense, we don't see any way that Lawton isn't significantly improved on that side of the ball. The Wolverines have had a losing record in three straight seasons but we think that streak comes to an end in 2026. First, they will look to get out to a fast start in the non-district schedule. But we could definitely see a scenario where the Wolverines end up being one of the surprise teams in their district. They could contend for one of the top spots in the district and if they do that, they will be set up for a potential run in the 5A playoffs.

The Wolverines bring back everyone from last year's defensive starting lineup. And when we talked with Lawton's coaches this month, they were incredibly excited about the potential of the group on the line of scrimmage. In a deep group, 2028 defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='2331925' first='Israel' last='Moore'] was the first guy they mentioned for a unit that could end up being seven or eight guys deep. Moore is coming into this season with some momentum after a successful sophomore season in 2025. So now, he has the potential to completely set the tone for the Wolverines on the line of scrimmage.

The Wolverines have a new quarterback this season but that doesn't mean their quarterback from a year ago went anywhere. 2027 standout [player_tooltip player_id='2331926' first='Joseph' last='Simpson'] is now moving over to the wide receiver position and will immediately become one of the top targets for the Wolverines on offense. Last season, there was no doubt that Simpson had terrific athletic ability and he played the quarterback position like an athlete. Now, he gets to have more freedom to just make plays when the ball is in his hands. Don't be surprised if he ends up leading Lawton in receiving this season.

When we think of some of Lawton's best teams over the last few decades, strong play on the offensive line is always at the top of the list of what made them special. This year's Wolverine offensive line has the potential to be very special. 2028 offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='2331927' first='Kamarion' last='Larkin'] is a name to know moving forward. He is going to check a lot of boxes when it comes to being a legitimate prospect for the next level. He has size and can absolutely maul guys on the line of scrimmage. This is an offensive line that has experienced upperclassmen and very talented underclassmen.

2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1307135' first='Noah' last='Smith'] is a new addition to the Lawton roster after spending the last few years at Blanchard. Smith has had a very busy offseason. In addition to getting acclimated with his new team, Smith tore it up on the camp circuit. He was offered by Oklahoma and committed on the spot. Smith is a 2027 quarterback that has shown promise for a long time now. We're looking forward to seeing how he carries the momentum from a very successful offseason into the fall. He's going to have weapons around him and a strong offensive line to put up some big time numbers.

Joining Smith in the Lawton backfield is 2029 running back [player_tooltip player_id='1896820' first='Quovon' last='Coston Jr.'] and we're looking forward to seeing what he does for an encore. Last season, Coston was one of the top freshmen in the state when it came to producing on the offensive side of the ball. At this time last year, we didn't know anything about Coston but it became clear pretty soon that he was going to be a name to know in this 2029 class. He produced at a high level during his freshman season and the stage is set for an even better sophomore season with a very talented quarterback and strong offensive line leading the way.

The ceiling for Lawton on the defensive side of the ball is incredibly high. When you're talking about bringing back all eleven starters and even more players that played, you have a ton of potential. All signs right now are pointing to 2027 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1832837' first='Raheem' last='Ellzey'] being the star of the Wolverine defense this season. He returns as the man in the middle of this Lawton defense. From that middle linebacker position, Ellzey is considered the anchor of the defense and he played very well last season. Now, he's looking to lead this Lawton defense to new heights this season.

2026 SCHEDULE

Aug. 28th - AT Lawton Eisenhower
- The 2026 football season kicks off with the annual rivalry game against Lawton Eisenhower in week zero. This will be the third straight year that these two city rivals square off in the season opener. Last year, Lawton won 42-6, snapping a two-game losing streak in the series. The Wolverines will now look to start another winning streak against the Eagles.
Sept. 4th - University City (St. Louis)
- Sandwiched in between two city rivalry games is a week one game against University City out of St. Louis in week one. The Wolverines will host the Lions this year and go up to Missouri next year. This will be the first meeting between these two teams and it's the first time since 2019 that the Wolverines will face an out-of-state opponent.
Sept. 11th - Lawton MacArthur
- If the Wolverines beat Lawton Eisenhower in week zero, they will come into this week two clash with Lawton MacArthur with a chance to win the city title for the first time since 2022. They've dropped three straight to the Highlanders and none of those losses were relatively close. They look to turn things around in the rivalry here.
Sept. 18th - Stillwater
- The non-district schedule wraps up with a home game against Stillwater in week three. This is a renewal of an old 6A-2 rivalry. The Wolverines won the first four meetings from 2014-2017. But Stillwater struck back with four straight wins from 2018-2021. The Pioneers have remained one of the top teams in Class 6A-2 and this year is no different.
Sept. 25th - AT Midwest City
- District play opens up for Lawton in week four and they'll leave Lawton for the first time in 2026 when they head to Midwest City. The Bombers are a new district opponent for the Wolverines. Similar to the Stillwater match-up, these two were old 6A-2 rivals from 2014-2021. Lawton won the first two meetings during that stretch but the Bombers won the last six.
Oct. 9th - Guthrie
- After a week off, the Wolverines return to the field in week six to host Guthrie. The Blue Jays have been a district opponent the last two seasons and they have dominated this series. 2024 was the first meeting between these two teams and Guthrie won 35-6. Last season, the Blue Jays rolled to a 65-20 win. Lawton looks to turn things around here.
Oct. 15th - AT Noble
- On a Fall Break Thursday night in week seven, the Wolverines will go on the road to face Noble. These two have been district foes for the last two seasons. Lawton won the first meeting in 2024 while the Bears beat the Wolverines last season. Noble will look different this season with several new faces on both sides of the ball.
Oct. 22nd - Durant
- The Wolverines return home in week eight for a Thursday night game against Durant. The Lions are a new district opponent after moving west in the recent district realignment. Lawton has played Durant before but not in over 60 years. 1965 was the only time these two teams have met on the gridiron. Lawton won 41-14.
Oct. 30th - AT Duncan
- The Wolverines go on the road to face Duncan in week nine. Unlike Durant, Duncan is a new district opponent but Lawton has seen them in recent memory. These two teams met in non-district play from 2020-2023. It was a series that was owned by the Wolverines. They won all four meetings and expect to keep that streak alive this year.
Nov. 6th - Carl Albert
- The regular season comes to a close with a week ten home game against defending state champion Carl Albert. The Titans have won nine of the last ten state titles in Class 5A so it's clear that this will be a measuring stick game. It's also possible of the Wolverines take care of business that this is a head to head clash for the district title.

Head coach Lorenzo Williams is heading into his third season as head coach of the Wolverines. He's looking to get Lawton back into a position that we saw with the Wolverines a decade ago. They were contending for state championships year after year. The district opener in week four is certainly going to be a special week for Williams and family. The Wolverines head to Midwest City to open district play but it's also a homecoming for Williams as he is a Midwest City grad. Two decades ago, Williams was a decorated athlete at Midwest City in multiple sports before moving on to play college football at Missouri. This will be a homecoming of sorts but at the same time, the goal is very clear. The Wolverines will be determined to get out to a fast start and pick up some momentum in the district slate. So while it might feel like a homecoming, once the ball is kicked off on that Friday night, it will be all about the Wolverines beating the Bombers.
