East Hardy battled through an 0-3 start in 2025 and still found a way to finish 6-6 with another trip to the Class A playoffs. The Cougars played one of the tougher schedules in Class A and were much closer to a big season than their record suggests, with several losses coming down to one possession late in games. Their season eventually ended with an overtime loss to Pendleton County in the quarterfinals, just short of a semifinal appearance. With nearly two decades of consistent playoff football behind the program and plenty of experience returning, East Hardy has the pieces to turn those close losses into wins and make a deep run in 2026.

One of the most productive quarterbacks in the state last season was 2027 East Hardy QB/ATH [player_tooltip player_id='864946' first='Trevor' last='Roof']. He's coming off a junior campaign that put him firmly among the top Class A players to know in the state. Roof threw for 2,171 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing 61 percent of his passes, ranking among the state leaders in both categories. He added another 646 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground, giving East Hardy a quarterback who can punish defenses whether the ball is in his hands as a passer or runner. Roof has the arm talent to make every throw and the athleticism to create when a play breaks down, making him one of the toughest players in Class A to defend. A strong senior season could further cement Roof as one of the state's top small-school prospects and earn him more college attention.

A strong junior season from 2027 East Hardy OL [player_tooltip player_id='2060058' first='Connor' last='Henderson'] gives the Cougars a proven lineman to lean on up front again this season. Henderson was a key player in the trenches last season, showing the strength and quickness to create running lanes as a pulling guard. His physical style allows him to win blocks in different ways, and he brings the kind of toughness East Hardy needs from its offensive line. With Henderson and several other starters returning up front, the Cougars should have a solid foundation in the trenches heading into another playoff push.

He has reliable hands and brings that same physicality to the return game while also contributing defensively. It marked the fourth semifinal appearance under head coach Zac Smith, continuing a stretch of success that has made the Wildcats one of the state's most consistent small-school programs. The loss ended a season that showed Pendleton County was close to breaking through, and the Wildcats return nearly their entire starting lineup from that team. With that experience coming back, the Wildcats have a legitimate chance to take another step in 2026 and make another run at the Class A championship.

Hoyt brings a 6'3 285 frame to the trenches and already contributed 38 tackles on defense as a sophomore. He plays with the kind of size and strength that can make him a difficult matchup on either side of the ball at the small school level, and there is plenty of room for his game to continue developing. Hoyt is still under the radar, but a strong junior season and more film could put him in position to earn high honors in his final two years for the Wildcats.

Pocahontas County finished 3-7 in 2025, but the Warriors enter 2026 with a much more experienced group than they've typically had in recent years. A rare senior class of roughly 12-14 players gives the program a strong group of veterans to lean on, something that could make a major difference for a team trying to end a postseason drought dating back to 2017. Doug Burns enters his 13th season at the helm, and this could be one of his more experienced and talented rosters during that tenure. The Warriors have a chance to surprise some people in Class A and could be a sneaky team to watch this fall.

Price has a slighter build but runs hard for his size and brings the toughness to handle a bigger workload in the backfield. His speed also stands out at outside linebacker, where he can cover ground quickly and chase plays down from the second level. Price has the skill set to make a bigger impact on both sides of the ball and could be one of the Warriors' breakout players in 2026.

Taylor also stepped up at quarterback when needed and earned Second Team All-Potomac honors at the position, showing the versatility that makes him an important player for Pocahontas County. Gregory brings a long 5'11 140 frame with good speed and range on the back end, giving the Warriors a player who can cover ground and make plays in the secondary. The Bulldogs will lose a few productive players from that team, but Bennett now has a full year in the program under his belt and is continuing to work on improving every facet of the Bulldogs' program. His background on the Bridgeport staff brings a wrinkle to the offense, with Tygarts Valley expected to implement more single-wing concepts in 2026. There is still plenty of work to do, but the Bulldogs showed progress last season and will look to keep moving in that direction this year.

Felton recorded 45 tackles in just six games as a junior, showing the activity and motor that make him a consistent and active presence in the middle of the defense. He has that classic middle linebacker mindset, flying to the football and finishing plays with physicality, and is a sure tackler. Felton should be a major piece of Tygarts Valley's single-wing offense at fullback as well and has the opportunity for a big senior season on both sides of the ball.

He doesn't shy away from contact and plays with the kind of effort and scrappiness that makes him a difficult player to account for.
