Man enters 2026 trying to climb out of back-to-back losing seasons with a roster that will lean on underclassmen. The Hillbillies went 3-8 last year and were knocked out by Wahama in the first round, but they return four seniors with significant experience in Duke Harless, Braxton Blankenship, Braxton Sword and Aaron Vanover. With a young roster and limited numbers, finding the right players for the right spots will be a major part of the early season. Man will stick with its traditional approach on both sides of the ball and look to improve week by week to get back to winning football and making a push toward the postseason.

Versatility has been a big part of 2027 Man ATH Aaron Vanover's career, and that will be key for the Hillbillies this season. Vanover has been a varsity contributor since his freshman year and has played just about everywhere, giving Man a veteran who can fill different roles depending on what the team needs. He is expected to spend most of his time at RB and LB again this fall, but he can also handle quarterback duties if needed with the position open. Vanover will be one of Man's top players and has the experience and ability to make a strong push for postseason recognition as a senior.

With so many underclassmen expected to take on significant roles, his experience will be valuable as Man works to get everyone settled into their spots. The Golden Knights remain one of the younger teams in Class A, with just five seniors and six juniors on the roster, so developing that young group will be a major focus throughout the season. Mount View has put extra work into the offseason, particularly in the weight room, while also making changes to its offensive and defensive schemes. The Golden Knights may still have some growing to do, but the goal is to become more consistent each week and turn that development into more competitive football and a chance to get back in the win column.

Sherman has plenty of reasons to be optimistic heading into 2026, but replacing last year's senior production will be the biggest challenge for the Tide. Trey Lester and Dawson Green were major contributors on both sides of the ball, while Luke Elkins and Cade Wall also leave holes in the trenches. The good news is senior QB Eli Pauley returns after a strong junior season, giving Sherman an experienced player to build the offense around, with Chase Southern and Colby Atkins among the playmakers expected to take on larger roles. Sherman also returns multiple starters along the line, which could help ease some of the transition. With a difficult road-heavy start and a schedule filled with rivalry games, the Tide will need to find their identity quickly if they want to reach their goals.

With Sherman looking to replace some of the rushing production lost from last year's offense, don't be surprised to see Atkins get more work out of the backfield this season.
Tug Valley has one of Class A's premier two-way playmakers in 2027 WR/DB Cameron Slone, who is coming off a monster junior season. Slone earned Honorable Mention All-State honors after putting up 1,100 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns while adding 49 tackles and four interceptions in the secondary. He has already surpassed 3,000 career receiving yards and 35 touchdowns, giving him a level of production that is rare to find. Slone picked up an offer from Charleston this summer, and will be the Panthers' biggest weapon again in 2026.

Tug Valley has a proven leader in the middle of its defense with 2027 LB Cane Thompson, who returns for his senior season as one of the Panthers' most important players. Thompson earned Second Team All-State honors last year after making 79 tackles and 11 tackles for loss and will be a four-year starter. He plays downhill and brings a physical edge to the position, making him difficult for opposing offenses to account for. With a new coaching staff in place, having a veteran like Thompson setting the tone on defense will be a major advantage for the Panthers.

Tug Valley brings back one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the state with 2027 QB Preston May, who enters his senior season as a four-year starter. May has thrown for more than 6,000 yards and 80 touchdowns through his first three seasons, giving the Panthers a veteran player to rely on in 2026. He earned Honorable Mention All-State honors as a junior, but his production and ability are deserving of more recognition this fall. May is a confident gunslinger who can also make plays with his legs as one of the top quarterbacks in West Virginia.

Tug Valley will have to wait for 2027 WR/DB Derek Jewell to return from injury before seeing what his senior season can become. Jewell had 500 receiving yards and six touchdowns as a junior while adding 49 tackles and an interception on defense, showing the two-way ability that has made him an underrated part of the program. His injury will keep him out for a large chunk of the season, but the hope is that he can return later this fall and make an impact down the stretch. When healthy, Jewell is a talented playmaker who was set to have a big year for the Panthers before the setback.

Tug Valley has an exciting young player developing on both sides of the ball in 2029 RB/LB Bryson Richardson. Richardson made his presence felt as a freshman with seven sacks while playing a major role on the Panthers' defense at outside linebacker, which will continue this season. His responsibilities will expand offensively, with Richardson stepping into a larger role at running back following the graduation of Bryson Elia. He has a natural feel for finding the football and the athleticism to make an impact in multiple ways, making Richardson one of the younger players in the program worth keeping close tabs on over the next three years.

Tug Valley adds another explosive element to its offense with 2028 WR/DB Mattox Sartin, who joins the Panthers from Mingo Central. A standout basketball player, Sartin brings the athleticism and speed to make an immediate impact, with great speed that gives him legitimate big-play ability. His presence will force defenses to defend the entire field with the athleticism and playmaking ability he possesses. With the amount of talent already on the Tug Valley roster, Sartin gives the Panthers another dangerous weapon to utilize on both sides of the ball.

Van football is back, and that alone makes 2026 a significant season for the Bulldogs. After the program was unable to field a team last year because of low numbers, Van returns with a young roster and plenty of players learning the game at the high school level for the first time. With only 14 players currently on the roster, depth and health will be major factors, but the Bulldogs have a chance to build something simply by getting back on the field and gaining experience each week. The schedule includes several programs also working through transitions, which should give Van opportunities to compete while its young players find their footing. With the future of Van High School itself uncertain beyond this school year, plenty is riding on bringing Friday night football back to Herschel Jarrell Field and giving the community a team it can rally behind.
