Greater Beckley Christian will bring football back to the school in 2026 for the first time in two decades with head coach Brian Harmon leading the charge, giving the Crusaders a chance to build the program from the ground up. The team will compete in Class A and has a young roster that includes several players who are still learning the game, but there is plenty of athleticism and speed to work with. Greater Beckley will use its mix of varsity and JV games as an opportunity to develop the roster and establish an identity in its first season back. There will undoubtedly be some growing pains, but the Crusaders have a chance to lay the foundation for the program and show progress throughout the season.

There is plenty to like about the potential of 2028 Greater Beckley QB [player_tooltip player_id='2345563' first='JP' last='Southern'] as he gets back into football. Southern last played in the youth league in Summers County and now takes on the challenge of leading a brand-new Crusaders program at the high school level. The 5'9 150 quarterback has a strong arm, good poise, and the ability to stretch the field vertically, giving Greater Beckley a chance to create some big plays through the air. He is still learning the game at this level, but Southern is an intriguing young player to watch as the Crusaders build their program.

[player_tooltip player_id='2345558' first='Javonte' last='Spencer'] gives Greater Beckley an intriguing athlete to work with as the Crusaders bring football back to the school. The 2028 WR is a 6'2 170 basketball standout who played middle school football at Oak Hill, and that athletic background should give him a good foundation as he transitions back to the football field. His length and athleticism give him the potential to become a big-play target, especially as he gets more comfortable with the position. Spencer is new to high school football, but he is one of the Crusaders' top athletes to watch as the program develops.

The 6'3 195 athlete gives the Crusaders a big target on the outside and should help provide some familiarity for a young offense learning the high school game. Remy is also a basketball player at Greater Beckley, adding another layer to his athletic background and giving him plenty of natural tools to work with. His previous football experience should help him settle in quickly, and he has the upside to quickly become one of the Crusaders' top playmakers.

He played middle school football at Oak Hill before making the move to Greater Beckley, so this won't be his first experience on the football field despite being new to it at the high school level. There will be a learning curve as he gets accustomed to the sport, but his athleticism could allow him to pick things up quickly and earn a big role on both sides of the ball.
Greenbrier West is looking to build on a playoff appearance in 2025 after fighting through injuries and a difficult schedule last fall. The Cavaliers showed enough to reach the postseason but know they need to be more consistent, particularly in finishing games and executing late. The biggest question heading into 2026 will be at quarterback, where Scott McClung, Vaxton Vaughan, Hayden Holliday and Mason Ward are competing for the opportunity to take over the offense. With a close-knit group returning and plenty of competition for key roles, Greenbrier West has the pieces to make another playoff push if it can find consistency over four quarters.

Butler returns as the team's tailback and at bandit linebacker with a much bigger year coming. He is an explosive runner with good speed and burst who can hit a crease and take it the distance, while his elusiveness makes him tough to tackle in the open field.
Montcalm enters 2026 with a clear goal after narrowly missing the postseason again last fall. The Generals went 4-6 in 2025, but there is a growing belief inside the program that this year's younger group can get over the playoff hump. Montcalm has spent the offseason emphasizing finishing games, taking care of the ball, and coming out on the right end of close games. The schedule will provide challenges, but if Montcalm can clean up the little things and develop its young talent, the Generals have a chance to finally break through and make their first playoff appearance in school history.

Montcalm has an under-the-radar two-way player to watch in 2027 TE/DL [player_tooltip player_id='1582996' first='Jerran' last='Pendry']. Pendry brings good size and athleticism to both sides of the ball and should have a larger role on offense with the Generals replacing a significant amount of receiving production. He can be a useful target in the passing game while also giving Montcalm a disruptive presence along the defensive front. Pendry has the tools to create havoc for Class A offenses, and a bigger senior season could make him one of the names that begins getting more attention around the state at the small school level.

Montcalm will have a proven target on the outside with 2027 WR [player_tooltip player_id='2132854' first='Donovan' last='Reed'], who enters his senior season after being one of the Generals' leading receivers last year. Reed caught 35 passes for 470 yards and two touchdowns as a junior, giving the Generals a reliable option they can lean on with a new quarterback taking over. His 6'2 frame and basketball background give him the length and body control to make plays over defenders, while his size can create issues on the perimeter for defensive backs. With Montcalm looking to replace some of its offensive production, Reed has a chance to become an even bigger part of the game plan this fall.

Richwood is coming off difficult back-to-back 0-10 seasons, but the Lumberjacks enter 2026 with hope that they can look much different. As one of the smallest football programs in the state, depth is always a challenge, making the return of key players across the roster especially important. Richwood has experience coming back at multiple levels of the team, giving the Lumberjacks a strong foundation heading into this season. They'll have a great opportunity to get back in the win column and show early that this group can take a step forward.

Richwood will lean heavily on 2027 OL/LB [player_tooltip player_id='2345744' first='Chanler' last='Mullens'] as a senior leader up front, especially with several inexperienced linemen stepping into starting roles this season. Mullens is a weight room warrior, breaking all of the Lumberjacks' lift records as the strongest player in the program. He'll also make the move to linebacker on defense, giving Richwood an experienced player to help steady a young group up front. This is a big leadership year for Mullens, and his veteran presence will be crucial as the Lumberjacks try to turn things around.

With Richwood's top rusher graduated, 2027 RB [player_tooltip player_id='1624367' first='Fawkes' last='O'Dell'] has a chance to take over the backfield after showing plenty as the Lumberjacks' #2 option last season. O'Dell recorded 525 rushing yards and five touchdowns in eight games of available stats, giving him a solid foundation heading into his junior year. O'Dell runs with good balance and doesn't go down easily, often keeping his feet through arm tackles and contact while having the speed to break into the open field. He's a very good athlete and can carry them as a junior this year in the ground game.

Richwood has an experienced quarterback to build around in 2028 QB/ATH [player_tooltip player_id='2345763' first='Grady' last='Hall'], who is entering his third season as the Lumberjacks' starter. Hall took over as a 5'4 95-pound freshman and has grown into a smart, confident football player who understands the offense well. He threw for 700 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore, and his experience is incredibly valuable for a Richwood team looking to get some wins this year. Hall will be a key returning piece of the Lumberjacks' offense this season and has a chance to take a big step forward as a junior.
