In 2023, the Savages went 3-7 but made the playoffs. In 2024, they doubled their win-total, going 6-4 but lost the wrong games and missed the postseason. So needless to say, Broken Bow came into 2025 hungry to leave no doubt. And they certainly did just that. They took care of business in non-district play and were 4-0 going into October. Sallisaw got the best of them in a high-scoring affair in week five but that would be their only blemish in the regular season. They bounced back by lighting up the scoreboards, week after week, including a big 42-14 win over Ada in week eight. They locked up the district title with a 22-point win over Poteau and finished the regular season with a 9-1 record. The Savages certainly looked like one of the teams to beat when the 4A playoffs opened up. That offense continued to execute at a high level, scoring 70 points in the first round, followed by 50 points in the quarterfinals. They matched up with Tuttle in the semifinals and the journey finally came to an end. They fell 49-28 as the Tigers went on to capture the 4A state championship the following week. Class 4A in 2025 felt like a two-team race with Elgin and Tuttle and it ended up playing out like that. But Broken Bow certainly made plenty of headlines with an explosive offense, led by the most electric football player in the state. And now that the Savages have had a little taste of success, they're going to be hungry for much more now that the calendar has turned to 2026.

2026 OUTLOOK

For the first time in a long time, Broken Bow comes into a season as the preseason number one team. Coming off their 11-2 semifinal run a year ago, the Savages have everything in place to take that next step and contend for the Class 4A state championship. All eyes will gravitate to the offensive side of the ball as the Savages bring back nine starters from last year's team that averaged nearly 45 points per game. The offense is headlined by arguably the most electric football player in the state at the quarterback position. And he might just be the best overall player in Oklahoma this year. And what's scary is the fact that he's not alone. The Savages bring back their offensive line and several skill players that make this Broken Bow offense look like one of the better units in the state, regardless of class. It wouldn't surprise us if they flirt with averaging 50 points per game or more this season. When you do that, you're not going to lose too many games. Defensively, the Savages will need some new faces to step up as they bring back just five starters from last year's team. But they got a boost this offseason with a couple additions that could be instant impact players this season. Broken Bow will be battle-tested by the time November rolls around. They once again find themselves in one of the more competitive districts in the state, regardless of class. You can make the argument that Broken Bow's first two district games are their toughest and could make or break their chances at capturing another district championship. But Broken Bow won't be satisfied with winning only another district title. They came close to playing for the state title in 2025 and now they want to cross the finish line in 2026.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Jackson Porter - Defensive Lineman (2025 All State Honorable Mention)
Sky Baker - Defensive Back

PLAYERS TO WATCH

2028 wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1599208' first='Dejhaun' last='Hall'] has continued to improve year over year since earning a starting spot as a freshman in 2024. Hall had a solid freshman season and followed that up with an even better sophomore campaign in 2025. Hall was a 1,000-yard receiver last season and he's hungry for more in 2026. Last season, Hall was the unquestioned leader at the receiver position. He led the team in catches and yards. He also finished the season with seven touchdown catches. There are weapons all over this Broken Bow offense but Hall is the top guy at the wide receiver position. We're interested to see what kind of step forward he takes this season.

(2025 All State Honorable Mention)

2027 quarterback and Oklahoma WR commit [player_tooltip player_id='1525562' first='Greydon' last='Howell'] has the reputation of being the most electric football player in the state. If you have the chance to watch Howell in person this season, go do it and don't hesitate. Howell enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore and then followed it up by being one of the ten best players in the state a year ago, earning a spot as a PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year finalist. Howell threw for over 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns while adding over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. Howell has had all the individual accolades and attention and now he wants to end his career with the ultimate team goal of a state championship.

(2025 PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year Finalist)

There's probably not another player that enjoyed a bigger breakout season in 2025 than Broken Bow 2027 running back [player_tooltip player_id='1174139' first='Jattairrius' last='Neal'] and we're fired up to see what he does for an encore. Last season, Neal joined Howell in the Broken Bow backfield and was absolutely dominant. He ran for over 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was also a threat in the passing game, finishing the year with over 500 yards and nine touchdowns. He actually led the team in receiving touchdowns and finished with over 2,000 yards of total offense. When opponents tried to key in on limiting Howell, Neal immediately made them pay and became an end zone magnet.

(2025 All State Honorable Mention)

There is a lot of talk about the potential of this Broken Bow offense and rightfully so. But the Savage defense is a unit that shouldn't be overlooked coming into this season. 2027 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1171160' first='Kade' last='Pratt'] returns after enjoying a dominant first season with the Savages last year. He led the team in tackles and it wasn't particularly close. Pratt was the only Broken Bow defender that had at least 100 tackles on the season and he actually finished with 165. Just an absurd number and 35 of those tackles came for a loss. Pratt earned All State 3rd Team honors. And with plenty of new faces on this defense, look for the Savages to lean heavily on their standout senior linebacker.

(2025 All State 3rd Team Selection)

2027 defensive lineman and tight end [player_tooltip player_id='1171159' first='Kyng' last='Golston'] is a new addition to the Broken Bow roster after becoming a star at Valliant the last several seasons. Golston is widely considered one of the top defensive lineman prospects in the state's 2027 class. He's also a productive tight end but there's no doubt that his greatest impact will come on defense. Golston will look to help set the tone for the Broken Bow defense on the line of scrimmage. With the Golston addition, Broken Bow's front seven has the potential to be lights out this season. And Broken Bow didn't need another weapon on offense but they got the ultimate safety blanket for Howell with Golston at tight end.

(2025 All State Honorable Mention)

Similar to Golston, 2027 wide receiver and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1024950' first='Ryker' last='Prince'] comes over to Broken Bow from Valliant and we're fired up to see what kind of immediate impact Prince has on this year's team. Prince was such an underrated part of what Valliant did last season as they made a run at the district championship and went 9-1 in the regular season. Prince will give the Savages another reliable and consistent weapon at the wide receiver position. He'll then turn around and give them a versatile piece on the defensive side of the ball. He can line up at a variety of positions on defense but it looks like the Savages will mostly use him at linebacker.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='1833829' first='Aden' last='Hammonds'] - 2028 Offensive Lineman
Breydon Burks - 2029 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1829074' first='Jerrimiah' last='Scales'] - 2028 Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1833825' first='Kalel' last='Flagg'] - 2028 Wide Receiver
[player_tooltip player_id='1829069' first='Stauter' last='Brown'] - 2029 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back

2026 SCHEDULE

Aug. 28th - AT McAlester
- Broken Bow will open up the season for the seventh consecutive year against McAlester. And in the last six meetings, McAlester has dominated the series for the most part. Prior to last year's meeting, the Buffaloes had won five straight. Then the Savages knocked off McAlester 23-20 in the season opener a year ago.
Sept. 4th - AT Durant
- Broken Bow will go back on the road to face Durant in week one. The Savages knocked off the Lions 26-23 last season and also won a close and competitive game in 2024. These two teams have met in non-district play for the majority of the last decade. Broken Bow has the edge in the series, with Durant winning only one game during the last ten years.
Sept. 11th - Idabel
- The Savages will wrap up non-district play with their home opener against Idabel in week two. This has been a series that the Savages have absolutely dominated both now and historically. They'll look to do the same this year. Last season, they beat Idabel 49-12 and in 2024, there was a 42-21 victory as the Savages haven't lost to Idabel in a long time.
Sept. 25th - AT Sallisaw
- After a week off, the district slate opens up for the Savages with a road game against Sallisaw. Despite winning the district championship last season, the one blemish in district play was a 40-30 loss to Sallisaw. The Savages certainly haven't forgotten about that. This has been a very back and forth district rivalry since they started playing every year in 2016.
Oct. 2nd - Poteau
- Following the showdown with Sallisaw is another tough district clash as Broken Bow hosts Poteau in week five. This two-week stretch could make or break Broken Bow's district title hopes. The Savages beat the Pirates 36-14 last season and that snapped a two-game skid in the series and was just their second win over Poteau in the last eight meetings.
Oct. 9th - AT McLain
- Broken Bow will head to Tulsa to square off with McLain in week six. These two teams have been district foes the last two seasons and each team has a blowout victory. Broken Bow came out flat defensively and lost 48-18 in 2024, which kept them out of the playoffs. Then last year, they bounced back with a dominant 48-7 victory.
Oct. 15th - Hilldale
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Broken Bow hosts Hilldale and the Savages will look to roll over the Hornets again this season. Last year, the run game was dominant as they beat Hilldale 61-20. The Savages have won three straight in the series against Hilldale. These two teams have been district foes since 2016. Hilldale will have a new but familiar first year head coach.
Oct. 23rd - AT Stilwell
- The Savages go back on the road in week eight to face Stilwell for their final road game of the regular season. This is another series that has been completely one-sided, in favor of the Savages. They've met every year in district play since 2016 and Broken Bow has never lost to Stilwell. They scored a season-high 70 points in last year's meeting.
Oct. 30th - Ada
- It wouldn't be surprising to see this week nine clash with Ada end up deciding the district championship. Ada loses a lot to graduation so this will be a new look Cougar team but they are still dangerous. Broken Bow knocked off Ada 42-14 last season and that snapped a three-game losing streak to the Cougars.
Nov. 6th - Mannford
- Broken Bow's entire district slate is the same as it has been with the exception of one game. The regular season finale features a new opponent as Mannford comes to town. This will be their first meeting in recent memory as former district foe Glenpool moved up to Class 5A and Mannford has moved up from Class 3A.

NOTABLE

When you have an emerging superstar, you can immediately turn around a football program. That's what head coach Maverick Lang has done with the Savages since [player_tooltip player_id='1525562' first='Greydon' last='Howell'] returned to the football field. Lang took over in the spring before the 2024 football season. Howell hadn't played football in several years and was tearing it up on the basketball court. But Howell came out to football, really to just help some of his friends and be an extra body for the Savages. That's how it started and the rest is history. They went 6-4 in 2024, with Howell emerging as one of the state's most electric football players. Then they went 11-2 with a district title and a semifinal appearance. Howell was hands down one of the state's best players and now we look ahead to 2025. As we mentioned several times earlier, Broken Bow is chasing history. They tasted their first deep run in the playoffs in over 15 years.
