Tennessee high school football is loaded with talent heading into the 2026 season, and the Class 3A group is packed with standout defensive playmakers. As summer approaches, several guys are emerging as top prospects to watch in Tennessee high school football recruiting.

In this scouting series breaking down the top football players by position and classification, here's an in-depth look at the top five Class 3A defensive backs in Tennessee entering the 2026 high school football season.

Photo: Westview DB [player_tooltip player_id='1422977' first='Miles' last='Brown'] at practice. Photo from his X/Twitter.

2027 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1422977' first='Miles' last='Brown'] – Westview High School

[player_tooltip player_id='1422977' first='Miles' last='Brown'] is one of the elite in-state defenders heading into his senior year at Westview. Last season, he recorded 24 tackles, three interceptions, a pick-six and two fumble recoveries. The No. 2 cornerback in Tennessee recently committed to Kentucky, but still has a final season of high school ball, where his team opens as the heavy state championship favorites.

He offers nice size for his position, standing 6-foot and weighing 190 pounds, with an athletic frame that allows him to maintain his mobility and explosiveness. Brown is a smart football player with quick instincts, which is evident when you watch him lock down wide receivers. He's an elite coverage corner, but has impressive ball skills as well.

The 2027 prospect knows exactly when to jump a route and makes excellent plays to intercept or deflect balls. While his job is to cover people, Brown is a willing tackler who is physical and will lay the boom if an opportunity arises. He's a four-star prospect for a reason, and should continue to contribute at a high level in the SEC.

Photo: Tyner DB Dion Edwards. Taken by Drew Toennies, Prep Redzone Tennessee.

2028 [player_tooltip player_id='1565851' first='Antonio' last='Edwards'] – Tyner Academy

Antonio “Dion” Edwards took that next step in his sophomore season, dominating competition at the Class 3A level and becoming a household name on the recruiting trail. He's a four-star prospect and the No. 8 overall player in Tennessee for his class, but still has areas that he can grow. That's not a knock on him either; it's just a testament to how talented he is.

Edwards holds more than 20 Division I offers, but is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential. He offers nice size for his position, standing 6-foot and weighing 170 pounds in a long, athletic frame that makes him dominant. The rising junior possesses nice instincts and the football IQ that allows him to play freely, while being able to jump passes for deflections and interceptions.

His coverage skills are excellent, along with an underrated level of physicality for a corner. He has good ball skills and tracks throws well, partially because of his background as a receiver on the other side of the ball. I want to see him polish up some parts of his game, but I cannot wait to see him back on the gridiron in 2026.

Photo: Chatt Prep DB [player_tooltip player_id='1704591' first='Kentrell' last='Watkins Jr.'] before a game.

2028 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1704591' first='Kentrell' last='Watkins Jr.'] – Chattanooga Preparatory School

[player_tooltip player_id='1704591' first='Kentrell' last='Watkins Jr.'] is one of the more intriguing defensive prospects in the 3A classification and is coming off a strong season with Chattanooga Prep. He totaled 57 tackles, four being for a loss, one sack, five interceptions and two pick-sixes, while earning Prep Redzone All-State honors. He does not hold offers right now, but keep an eye on this talented defensive back, as he has an FBS skill set.

He offers solid size, standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 165 pounds in a lean frame that helps him move well all over the field. Watkins Jr. is highly athletic with good ball skills, as evidenced by the number of picks and deflections he recorded. He plays sound coverage at his outside spot, along with the ability to tackle as well. The rising junior must grow physically to maximize his potential, but I like the upside in this young defensive player.

Photo: Westview DB [player_tooltip player_id='1092637' first='Messiah' last='Ward'] before a game. Photo from his Instagram.

2028 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1092637' first='Messiah' last='Ward'] – Westview High School

Westview High School had one of the best defenses in Tennessee last season, led by an excellent secondary. [player_tooltip player_id='1092637' first='Messiah' last='Ward'] is one of the players who anchored that group, recording 28 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups for the state champions. He earned his first offer from UT Martin earlier today, but should see more college interest throughout the offseason.

He offers solid size, standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 170 pounds with a long, athletic frame that makes him an intriguing prospect. Ward is speedy with sound technique and the ability to mirror receivers all over the field. He's a true lockdown corner who is next up for Westview. While he is impressive in coverage, I love his brand of physicality. The rising junior is a willing tackler who is unafraid to lower his shoulder.

Photo: Watertown ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1974232' first='Garrett' last='Davis'] during a game. Photo from his Instagram.

2027 ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1974232' first='Garrett' last='Davis'] – Watertown High School

[player_tooltip player_id='1974232' first='Garrett' last='Davis'] is an underrated defensive back heading into his senior season at Watertown High School. However, he was one of the best players in Class 3A last season, totaling 100 tackles, six for a loss and one interception, while earning Region 4-3A Defensive Player of the Year honors.

He possesses excellent size for his position, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 185 pounds with an athletic frame that allows him to maintain his mobility. Davis is a good all-around player but is a terrific tackler and brings great physicality. He is not afraid to hit and possesses sound technique, allowing him to walk up around the box. The rising senior is a solid coverage player and should remain one of the top athletes in Tennessee next season.

Tennessee high school football is loaded with talent heading into the 2026 season, and the Class 3A group is packed with standout defensive playmakers. As summer approaches, several guys are emerging as top prospects to watch in Tennessee high school football recruiting.
