The big boys in the defensive trenches are ready for a big summer. The leader of the group is committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but behind him is a long list of athletes ready to put on a show this summer and earn offers. Just within the Class of 2027 we have a variety pack of talent and paths to piling up wins in the trenches. To illustrate the spread of talent we are going to breakdown a handful, or more, DL from the Class who are deserving of the attention of college coaches. Let's roll the tape!

Knohah is a towering presence in the middle of the St. Croix Central defense. The 2027 DT/NG has an elite frame at 6'4" 295 lbs. The play strength jumps off the tape from the start. He takes on double teams, can quickly shed single blocks to get through a single gap or easily control his man if he were to play two gaps. Knohah also flashes violent hands throughout his tape to disengage blocks. Teams looking for a mismatch in the middle of the DL and someone who can control the line of scrimmage need to have the St. Croix Central big man at the top of their lists.

Sam is such an interesting 2027 recruit. He actually plays on the edge for Logan, but at 6' 250 lbs he is truly built for the trenches. What makes me even more excited about Sam is that his traits would dominate on the DL. He wins with an excellent first step that launches him off the line of scrimmage at the snap. Give him that quickness on the interior and watch IOL be outmatched vs him. He would be able to play early on as a pass rush specialist where that quickness and his active hand use would be able to shine. Plus with his frame he could do damage turning that speed into power at times. I love the potential mismatch that Sam could become on the DL at the next level.

Andrew is really growing on me the more I watch his tape. The 6'2" 290 lbs 2027 never stays blocked or engaged with the OL for long. He has strong hands that seem to be constantly working to get himself clean and shed blockers. The big man has surprising burst to him with quick and agile feet to get slip past blockers and create a constant state of disruption in the backfield. Andrew does a great job of finding the ball through all the traffic too and showing off his range to chase down the ball. The strength he shows to hold the line of scrimmage also will be something coaches are drawn too.

Platt is a big nose tackle/DT in the middle of the Oconomowoc defensive line. I love how often his play strength flashes on tape. Over and over he is controlling his man, giving no ground, and ready to show off his powerful hands to shed and make the tackle. Platt will catch linemen off guard with how quick he can be through gaps and his lateral movement. Platt is a tough, powerful IDL who can control the line of scrimmage, but also get that penetration to disrupt plays. I am pumped to watch things really pick up for him this summer.

Micah is built more as an edge than a pure DL, but for Shawano he plays with his hand in the dirt at DE. His pass rush ability should win him a lot of reps this summer and earn him opportunities to play at the next level. He uses the length he has to keep himself clean while rushing the edge. His speed and first step are effective at getting him the angle around the edge. That first step has also shown it can make him a very disruptive run defender. This kid is in the backfield a lot throughout his tape. I'm looking forward to seeing what he puts up in agility tests because he has some solid explosive athleticism to his game.

Speed kills and if that doesn't work a high motor can get you involved in a lot of plays. Ryan brings both of those traits to the field for the Chargers. I love the way they used him all along the DL, putting him in great matchups where his quick first step could give him a major advantage. Ryan did a good job of fighting through contact and showed that he could dip underneath OL and slip past them into the backfield. Coming off the edge against the run he does really well to not get too deep and instead squeezes down the line to make the TFL. This summer should be a good one for the athletic DL.
