We're still 6 months away from the 2026 season, but there's no better time to predict breakout stars during the offseason who have flashed in the past but haven't fully broken out yet. The transfer landscape has yet to be finalized, which may impact some of these predictions in the future. However, here is one player from each school, listed in alphabetical order, that we believe will have a breakout season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1154941' first='Adam' last='Woods'] heads toward his junior season at Tygarts Valley with the chance to carve out a much larger presence in the Bulldogs' offense. The 2028 athlete finished last fall as the team's third-leading rusher with 205 yards and three touchdowns, with two seniors ahead of him, and added 27 tackles defensively, giving a glimpse of the all-around role he can fill. Woods has been involved since early in his high school career, and his three-sport background points to the type of natural athletic development coaches like to see in young players. With another offseason to mature physically and develop further, the expectation is that his touches and responsibilities will increase. If that opportunity materializes, Woods can turn those early flashes into a much more productive and impactful junior campaign.

2027 RB/DB [player_tooltip player_id='897581' first='Gideon' last='Winfrey'] heads into his senior offseason at Tyler Consolidated with the kind of background that usually produces tough, competitive football players. The 2027 athlete earned Class AA Honorable Mention All-State honors as a junior and comes from a family with a long line of successful athletes. His success as a state champion wrestler also points to the balance, strength, and leverage that translate well to football, especially at running back and defensive back. Winfrey has a chance to build on that All-State recognition and make a stronger impact during his final season for the Knights.

[player_tooltip player_id='1577829' first='Jaedyn' last='Katchur'] quietly became one of the more reliable pieces in the University secondary during his junior season and finished the year showing the kind of versatility coaches value. The 2027 DB piled up 89 tackles and an interception while also emerging late in the year as a contributor in the backfield with 315 rushing yards and four touchdowns. His speed and range stand out from the safety spot, allowing him to cover ground in coverage while still playing downhill against the run with confidence. That athletic profile gives the Hawks flexibility in how they deploy him and suggests there is still room for his game to grow. Katchur has the tools to take another step forward and strengthen his standing among defensive back prospects in the class, while potentially earning All-State accolades as a senior.

[player_tooltip player_id='2148714' first='Gaige' last='Wichterman'] is one of those underclassmen who continues to trend upward as he gains experience in the Valley program. The 2028 athlete earned All OVAC Honorable Mention recognition as a sophomore and has the type of multi-sport background that often points to long-term development. At 5'10 160, he brings a lean athletic frame and comes from a family with strong athletic ties, which usually shows up in competitiveness and work ethic. His basketball background adds another layer to his overall athletic profile and suggests natural movement skills that can translate well on the football field. Wichterman has the potential to move beyond honorable mention recognition and position himself for higher postseason honors as he develops into one of the more intriguing athletes in their program.

[player_tooltip player_id='1155319' first='Trace' last='Simpkins'] heads into his senior offseason at Wahama looking to rebound from a junior year that was slowed by injuries after showing his potential earlier in his career. The 2027 quarterback earned Honorable Mention All-State recognition as a sophomore in 2024 and has the kind of athletic profile that still gives him a chance to make a major impact if he can stay healthy. Simpkins is a true dual-threat who fits naturally in a run-oriented offense, using his quickness and burst to create problems for defenses in the open field. While he may be undersized for the position, his speed and competitiveness allow him to influence the game in multiple ways, including as a defensive back. If he returns at full strength and recaptures the form he showed earlier in his career, Simpkins can put together the type of senior season that moves him into First Team All-State conversations and earns college attention.
