Get 30% off your first billing cycle with code: howe30 in the coupon code area

Season Review: Disruptive Defenders in 2028 Class

It's that time of year where Prep Redzone Iowa is digging into information from the recently completed campaign as we grow our data base of student-athletes. That process never really stops, but the offseason is when most of that work happens.

I'm diving into the 2029 Class today. The in-state freshmen are off to a great start. Here's a closer look at some of them:

Azzaline flashes a lot of upside. His chances of reaching that considerable potential is heightened by being in a program adept at developing student-athletes. His older brother, Maxwell, is a recruited lineman in the 2026 Class, so Charlie comes from strong bloodlines. Video clips on Azzaline's Hudl page are limited, so we're looking forward to him putting his highlight tape together. From what is available, we see advanced physicality relative to age. More than that, he's quick and athletic with a frame capable of adding plenty of good weight without the loss of any agility. Azzaline definitely is one to watch moving forward. He's certainly on my radar.

I began to look into what Toe was about when I saw that he visited Iowa towards the end of the regular season. He told me Iowa State also is showing interest in him. When that's happening to a freshman in high school, it's probably a good idea to pay attention to his development. Playing in a program that reached the school's first state semifinals this fall, Toe was behind a veteran group of receivers and running backs, so development was key in 2025. There's a limited amount of video on his Hudl page. Hopefully we get to see a highlight video from the season sometime soon. The footage we can find is from his eighth-grade year. Those clips do reveal an intriguing prospect with the versatility to shine at receiver, running back and defensive back.

Bousum got his feet wet as a freshman for a Johnston squad that won 11 games before falling by a touchdown to Valley in the 5A quarterfinals. He produced two solo tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in limited duty. Contributing in the state's largest classification as a ninth-grader is notable and bodes well for Bousum's future. Highlights from the season that can be found on his Hudl page also speak to bright days ahead. In addition to what he showed defensively on the varsity with advanced skills and development, Bousum gives every reason to believe he could end up being a tight end that's a receiving threat and a productive blocker.

As a freshman in 2025, Daugherty laid the groundwork for a bright future. The ninth-grader registered 6.5 tackles (4 solo, 1.0 TFL). When popping on his highlight tape of his varsity reps, we witness Daugherty operate with strength and physicality beyond his years. He's impactful at the point of attack and achieves a leverage advantage more often than not. On a three-man front, Daugherty proves effective lining up inside or at end, which illustrates his quickness and athleticism. He reports running the 40-yard dash in 5.3 seconds, the 100 meters in 13.5 and the shuttle in 4.4 with a 25-inch vertical leap. Daugherty lists his bench press at 205 pounds with two reps at 185 with 450 on the deadlift and 280 on the squat.

Bettendorf's roster was filled with veterans absorbing a lot of reps this season, which limited Davis' varsity opportunities. That should change next season with graduation losses coupled with his upside. Versatility and athleticism are two of his main strengths, which provides plenty of paths to the field thanks to position flexibility. We can witness the considerable upside when checking out his highlight video from this fall. It says he completed 69.5 percent of his throws for 1,088 yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding 735 yards (9.2 YPC) and 15 scores on the ground. He also chipped in with five receptions for 92 yards. In watching the film, it's a good idea to keep developing Davis as a quarterback with the benefit of knowing he could be effective at other positions on the next level, too.

Dickey has a lot of things going for him as a football prospect. The ninth-grader shows significant upside and is developing in a program capable of getting him there. In checking out clips on his Hudl page, we witness Dickey stressing defenses with the ball in his hands. Sometimes that happens with him running wildcat, lining up at running back or catching passes. Dickey appears advanced from a physical standpoint with the strength to run over opponents and the speed to sprint away from them. He's technically sound when running routes and patient when carrying the ball, waiting for his blocks to set up. Dickey is one to watch moving forward, for sure.
