Down in southern Oklahoma we felt like we would see a heavyweight fight between 3A's #2 Sulphur and 2A-1's #1 Washington and that's exactly how it played out. It was incredibly physical, close throughout and then finally, Sulphur senior [player_tooltip player_id='1569774' first='Maddax' last='Mobly'] took over on offense and defense and led the Bulldogs to a 28-19 win over Washington, snapping a 45-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the state and 14 wins away from breaking a record set by Bixby just a few years ago.

It was the season opener for Sulphur and they came out swinging. But Washington would answer every statement. But after a somewhat quiet first half, Mobly hit a gear in the second half, specifically in the fourth quarter where it felt like every single play Sulphur made, offensively or defensively, it was Mobly making it. The Bulldogs won't have much time to celebrate as they have to shift their focus and start preparing for rival and defending 2A-2 champion Davis in week two. Below, we have a link to our full game highlights, featuring postgame reactions from head coach Corey Cole and two-way star [player_tooltip player_id='1569774' first='Maddax' last='Mobly'] following the win.

Also below, we put the spotlight on seven players from Sulphur that really stood out in one way or another during Friday's win. And while we don't have any individual offensive linemen on this breakdown, we came away very impressed with Sulphur's line considering the guys they lost up front from last year's squad. That's a unit that's going to be just fine this season. Keep it locked into Prep Redzone Oklahoma every day for new content throughout the 2025 football season!

[player_tooltip player_id='1574394' first='Bridge' last='Barrett'] - Senior Defensive Back

Senior cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='1574394' first='Bridge' last='Barrett'] was one of the best players on the football field from start to finish. The Warriors would test Barrett early on and it seemed like every time they did, the senior corner had an answer. Whether it was breaking up pass after pass or even his interception that he made on his cousin, who's the Washington signal caller, Barrett had a big night. On that interception, he looked like he baited his cousin into making a mistake. He came off his man and floated back to pick off the pass and set the Bulldogs up near midfield. It should also be mentioned that Barrett was one of the better receivers for the Bulldogs but there is no doubt in our mind that Barrett was at his best when he was lined up at cornerback.

[player_tooltip player_id='1326387' first='Colten' last='Cole'] - Senior Tight End/Kicker

Senior and Rice commit [player_tooltip player_id='1326387' first='Colten' last='Cole'] was one of the top players from their win on Friday night and he might not get the credit that he deserves. Cole is an outstanding tight end and he put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard early on in the game. But for us, it was his impact as a kicker that helped the Bulldogs prevail in this heavyweight fight. Early on in the fourth quarter, Sulphur went up 14-13. Cole then booted the kickoff into the wind and found an opening in the Washington return formation. It hit the grass, took a Sulphur bounce and the Bulldogs recovered. They would score a few plays later and put some space between them and the Warriors. We had Cole as a preseason all state selection at kicker and he definitely lived up to the hype.

[player_tooltip player_id='1832234' first='Drake' last='Wood'] - Junior Wide Receiver

Junior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1832234' first='Drake' last='Wood'] is the first of two Bulldogs on this breakdown that we didn't know much about heading into the week one game. But as it turns out, Wood has the potential to be one of the top playmakers on this Sulphur offense. Wood made some huge plays Friday night from the wide receiver position and could end up being the team's leading receiver this season. Now, what his numbers end up being will be up for debate. He's playing in an offense that is certainly a run-first unit. But he made some huge catches down the field when the Bulldogs wanted to test the Washington defense and try to attack them deep. Whether it was in traffic, on the sideline or wherever, Wood had a solid breakout performance Friday.

[player_tooltip player_id='1694449' first='JoJo' last='Gray'] - Junior Running Back

Junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1694449' first='JoJo' last='Gray'] was an incredibly underrated part of Sulphur's run to the state championship game a year ago. This season, he looks like a guy that's ready to take the next step in this Sulphur offense. Gray lost a fumble early in the game but he didn't let that take him out of Friday's game. Gray stayed in the fight and had a big fourth quarter touchdown on the next play after Washington lost a fumble. That touchdown would put Sulphur up for good. The Bulldogs are going to have the luxury of at least three different players who can shoulder the load when it comes to the Sulphur rushing attack. Gray is one of those players and we wouldn't be surprised if he blows his production from last season out of the water this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1572513' first='Kale' last='Brakefield'] - Senior Quarterback

It was going to be an exciting night for senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1572513' first='Kale' last='Brakefield'] on Friday. He was making his first career start for the Bulldogs and he was doing it against his former team. Brakefield was one of Washington's leading tacklers last season at the linebacker position. He moved to Sulphur this offseason and he became QB1 for the Bulldogs. And Brakefield was ready to go at his former team from the opening snap. Sulphur had several designed runs that let Brakefield lower the shoulder and get physical with the Warriors. But we were very impressed with his passing as he was efficient on those opportunities and he can still be very effective on the defensive side of the ball. Brakefield had a great opening night as Sulphur's new QB1.

[player_tooltip player_id='1569774' first='Maddax' last='Mobly'] - Senior Running Back/Defensive Back

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1569774' first='Maddax' last='Mobly'] was the best player on the field Friday night. What's crazy is Mobly had somewhat of a quiet first half but that was not the case in the second. Specifically in the fourth quarter, Mobly absolutely took over. Offensively, he had two touchdowns, with the second one putting the dagger into Washington. Right before the second touchdown, Sulphur went for it on 4th and 3 from inside the Warrior 10. Mobly got the first down and then scored shortly after to put the game away. Defensively, he had some massive hits, a pass breakup on Washington's two-point conversion that could have made it a one possession game. And finally, he had an interception with under two minutes to play to officially put the game away. Absolutely dominant performance.

[player_tooltip player_id='1838499' first='Michael' last='Morris'] - Sophomore Linebacker

Sophomore linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1838499' first='Michael' last='Morris'] was another Sulphur Bulldog that we were not familiar with coming into Friday night's clash. It didn't take long for us to become familiar as he made a huge hit on one of the game's first plays. He's a young linebacker that is still figuring the game out but he already plays with that physical edge that we've grown accustomed to seeing from Sulphur defenders. We mentioned how this game felt like a heavyweight fight and Morris was definitely ready for a fight Friday night. As he continues to learn the game and learn his position, he's going to be a problem for Sulphur opponents moving forward. He's also an outstanding wrestler so he's definitely a name to watch as we go further into the season.
