IOWA CITY, Iowa - West Branch and Regina Catholic renewed one of the state's top rivalries Friday night. The Bears' comeback effort felt short in a 28-16 setback.

Here are six guys that stood out for West Branch in the contest:

Montgomery stood out to me last year when I scouted the West Branch-Regina game at the Little Rose Bowl. He did it again during Friday's in-person viewing of the next chapter in this great rivalry. Montgomery looks the part playing both ways for the Bears. The athletic and agile senior operates effectively at left offensive guard with sound technique. Montgomery's long arms work well with good hand placement and activity. Those traits transfer to the other side of the trench, where Montgomery also could develop into a productive player at the next level. He's hard to block with his burst off of the snap and quickness once underway. Montgomery's frame can comfortable add more good weight and skill development remains, giving him a sizable ceiling. Northern Iowa has reportedly offered a scholarship.

Dale was operating as the starting quarterback and free safety when I watched West Branch take on rival Regina in Week 2 of the 2025 season. He displayed potential for the next level on both sides of the ball thanks to plenty of athleticism and speed. Dale tossed a pair of touchdowns in the contest and gained 71 yards on just 10 carries. That dual-threat ability makes him interesting as a signal caller and also keeps open the door to get a look at receiver or running back. Dale might best fit as a college safety, too. His skill set works well there, especially when adding in his physicality and toughness.

Gates caught my eye last season with his defensive performance against rival Regina when I scouted that game. When I returned for the next installment of the great series in Week 2 of 2025, he looked like a prospect in both sides of the ball. In addition, he flashed potential as a return man. On offense, Gates rushed for 96 yards on 14 carries against a stingy defense. He's a patient and tough runner with some giddy-up. Gates led the Bears with 9.5 total tackles and seven stops for loss. The physicality that aids him with the ball in his hands certainly shines through on defense. Gates is a good athlete with speed and versatility. Colleges would be wise to monitor his progress.

I've scouted Gates playing in the West Branch-Regina rivalry game in each of the last three seasons. The latest chapter happened in Week 2 of the 2025 season. Gates isn't going to knock anyone over getting off the bus, but, boy, when he hits the field, he impacts the action on both sides of the ball. He caught a touchdown pass, and ranked second among Bears in total tackles (6.0) and solo stops (4) in this matchup. West Branch moves Gates around the defensive formation, and he uses toughness and smarts to get the job done. It might take a college being creative in how to use him, but Gates can help plenty of programs.

Kinsinger held up well against one of the better defensive fronts West Branch will see this season when it took on rival Regina in Week 2 of the 2025 season. Not the biggest guy in the trench, the junior operates with a good pad level and a powerful frame. He does a nice job controlling the opponent with hand placement, a sound base and good balance. Kinsinger has the natural instincts to play center, reading the defense before the snap and reacting quickly to what it does post-snap. He's one to watch for the rest of this season and beyond.

Morehead impacted the Week 2 of the 2025 season meeting with rival Regina on both sides of the trench. He helped the offense by operating with physicality and technical soundness as an undersized right tackle. Morehead used that toughness and relentlessness in finding success as a defensive tackle against a salty Regal offensive line with a pair of solo tackles among his 3.5 total. West Branch doesn't list heights and weights for its players on Bound or its home page, but it's safe to say Morehead lacks traditional measurements for some programs on the next level. His skills and mindset make him worth consideration, however.
