SOLON, Iowa – Mount Vernon dropped its first game of the season on Friday, a 35-20 setback against rival Solon. The Mustangs fell behind by a pair of scores in the first half and couldn't mount a comeback against 3A's top-ranked team.

Expect Mount Vernon to bounce back. Here are six Mustangs who caught my attention on Friday:

Haverback threw 27 touchdowns in leading Mount Vernon to the state semifinals last season. The Drake commitment has picked up where he left off as a senior in 2025. An in-person scouting opportunity in Week 3 of the campaign had him facing a stingy Solon defense. Haverback completed 23 of 37 throws for 244 yards and a touchdown without any interceptions. He's a big, physical signal caller that can really spin it. Haverback is fundamentally sound at the position with a smooth operation and quick release. He tosses a catchable ball, leads receivers and gets through his progressions in a timely fashion. That he's successful already with plenty of room for growth as a player should give Bulldog fans reason for excitement for what's to come.

Ryan is a prospect on both sides of the ball as an athletic performer that operates with a good motor. During an in-person scout at Solon in Week 3 of the 2025, Ryan confirmed what I saw from his last year. He caught five passes for 45 yards. A future on the next level as a slot receiver is a plausible path with his quickness in space and ability to make people miss. On defense, Ryan contributed 6.0 tackles, five of which were of the solo variety, against the Spartans. His well-rounded skill set as a defensive back could be most attractive to staffs on the next level. He can lock down in coverage and also isn't afraid to throw his nose in there on run support.

Rhomberg hails from a football family, which is apparent when watching him perform. It certainly looked that way during an in-person scouting opportunity in Week 3 of the 2025 season. Rhomberg caught five passes for 52 yards, raising his season totals to 10 receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Not the biggest guy on the field, Rhomberg succeeds by running precise routes and maximizing his top traits. They include quickness and burst, which help him avoid defenders in space and also accelerate past them. Some college coaches might like how those skills work for him on the other side of the ball, where he shows potential as a defensive back.

Anderson got his feet wet as a sophomore on the varsity in 2023 before breaking out last fall. His performance earned him first-team all-state honors from the Iowa Football Coaches Association. Anderson has taken another step forward so far in '25, as evidenced by what I witnessed during an in-person scout in a Week 3 matchup with Solon. He piled up 11.5 tackles, eight of which were of the solo variety, with 2.5 stops for loss. Anderson operates with great instincts. He plays at a fast tempo and embraces the game's physicality. You can tell he's prepared by watching him get positioned during pre-snap reads and then flowing to the football when it's put in play. There's a home for him somewhere on the next level.

Hlavacek showed off his big-play ability when I scouted him during Mount Vernon's Week 3 matchup with Solon. He fielded a first-quarter kickoff and raced 93 yards for a touchdown. The return put his speed and elusiveness on display. He also caught a seven-yard pass and contributed a pair of solo tackles. That's a solid all-around performance for a sophomore in a rivalry game. Hlavacek is kind of a blank canvas right now with the potential to develop at multiple positions. His broad base of skills give him a chance for a future at receiver or defensive back. And he'll be a special teams' contributor.

Curran wasn't someone I was familiar with when showing up for an in-person scout of Mount Vernon at Solon during Week 3 of the 2025 season. I left the field intrigued by what his potential after watching him in warmups and during the contest. He caught five passes for 40 yards in a game where offense was at a premium for the Mustangs. Curren boasts a frame and skills that make him a threat in the passing game. He's a tough matchup as someone who can win balls with physicality and athleticism. Curran appears to just be scratching the surface of what he can become as a player, which should be attractive to scouts on the next level.
