To no one's surprise, Minnesota's 2025 prep football season has lived up to the hype. There's been some great storylines so far this season, notably the new programs in higher classifications of competition making waves, fresh faces competing for state championship accolades, defending champs fighting like heck to defend their hardware, and some classifications completely up in the air contender-wise, two weeks of the 2025 season has set this year's high school football campaign up to be a great one. Week 2 was one for the record books, with big-time matchups from 6A to 9Man, thrilling finishes, upsets, shifting of power, and of course, some clutch finishes. Within the biggest games of Minnesota Week 2, individual athletes rose to the moment, put the team on their back, and produced clutch performances that allowed their squads to get over the finish line. Some would call them an MVP, some would call them a Top Performer, but here at PrepRedzoneMN, these guys are Heroes! Check out your Heroes of Week 2 below! Congrats, studs.

--

Minneota 37, Eden Valley-Watkins 30

Arguably the biggest matchup of Minnesota's Week 2 slate of games, defending Class A state champion Minneota battled up a level against Class AA Eden Valley-Watkins, who went 7-2 in 2024, and the game sounded like quite the nail-biter for both sides involved. Thanks to a prolific passing attack of the Eagles led by 2026 QB Blake Glenz and WR Brayden Becker, our HM Hero, EVW found themselves up 11 points during the first half, but a furious comeback led by Hero RB Kellen Bradley, who scored his third TD of the night in the waning minutes for the go-ahead, game-winning touchdown. The senior RB, who is stepping into the shoes of one of the most prolific RBs in Minnesota state history in Ryan Meagher, finished with 22 carries for 158 yards and 3 TDs in Minneota's takedown of a real-deal AA contender.

Hero = Kellen Bradley (Minneota) 2026. [player_tooltip player_id='212480' first='Blake' last='Betton'], a 2027 projected LB with nearly double-digit P4 offers, stepped into a WR role and made a momentum-turning 29-yard reception at the end of the third quarter, spring-boarding the Sabers into what became a go-ahead 29-yard TD run to take the lead back early in the 4th. Later, the Sabers defense held strong on a 4th and 2 rushing attempt by Lakeville South deep in their own territory with around a minute-and-a-half left in the ball game. Betton, who finished with 14 tackles in addition to his big-time catch, is our Hero of the Game, but is joined by some of his teammates. Good to see [player_tooltip player_id='923832' first='Carson' last='Turner'] pass the century rushing mark as well, as the 2026 tailback is finally back from an ACL tear that forced him to miss nearly his entire junior football and wrestling season.

Hero = [player_tooltip player_id='212480' first='Blake' last='Betton'] (Shakopee) 2027. In Week 2 of Minnesota's 2025 season, Farmington took down nearby Lakeville North, who they hadn't beaten since 2021 and are 2-7 in the previous nine matchups with the Panthers, a tremendous win and clear evidence that 2025 is going to have new names in the Top 10 throughout the regular season and beyond. The contest saw three scoreless quarters before Lakeville North's Jacob McEntee nailed a 31-yard FG to take a 3-0 lead, but [player_tooltip player_id='1255138' first='Chris' last='Rehak'], a 5'10, 205 lb. two-way dynamo and our Hero of the Game, scored the game-winning TD from one-yard out, after which Aiden Roche nailed the PAT to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead with five minutes left in the game. The Tigers' defense stopped two more LN drives to get the win over the finish line, and it was a good night to be a Farmington Tiger. Rehak has no reported offers as of right now, talk about a sleeper!

Hero = [player_tooltip player_id='1255138' first='Chris' last='Rehak'] (Farmington) 2026. Not a lot of information available publicly, including stats from Hawley, but I doubt the players, fans, and coaches involved in this one won't be forgetting it anytime soon. The two sides went into halftime tied up at 14-14, but a 10-yard TD run by Hartlieb, who also successfully kicked the ensuing PAT, put Esko up 21-14, and that PAT ended up making all the difference. After scoring late in the 3rd quarter on a Nashton Johanson 36-yard scamper, Cloquet missed the PAT, and neither side was able to find paydirt again. Class 9Man competitors Adrian/Ellsworth and Heron Lake/Okabena-Fulda got after it on a ferocious Friday Night matchup down in Southwest Minnesota, resulting in a finish for the ages and a terrific individual effort by Adrian/Ellsworth's Jackson Jenniges. The Coyotes pickup truck of a 2027 6'2, 245 lb. RB/LB Bryce Nielsen, who finished the game with 17 carries for 107 yards and a TD, opened the scoring up with his first quarter rushing TD, and a stifling defense held the Dragons to a near scoreless four quarters until Jenniges scored on a 47-yard scorcher that he followed with a successful 2pt conversion carry, sending the game into a thrilling overtime finish. Jenniges then scored on the first series of overtime and then once again ran in the ensuing 2pt conversion, putting the game in the hands of Heron Lake/Okabena-Fulda late Friday night. The Coyotes scored on a 4-yard carry by QB Brenton Erdmann (2026, 6, 185), but Adrian/Ellsworth seniors Garrett Penning and Jayden Lautt combined to tackle Erdmann short of the goal line to finish out a 16-14 comeback win at home in Week 2. This was also the first win for the Dragons in their first 9Man season in 30 years. The Tigers, despite a graduation of one of the state's top 2025 classes, are roaring through their new 4A competition, this time taking down perennial state title contender Totino-Grace in a last-minute upset of the Eagles. 2025 is the [player_tooltip player_id='1602765' first='Malik' last='Abdi'] show, and the senior RB, verified speedster, and standout hooper had himself a night, popping off 38 carries for 246 yards and 2 TDs, including the go-ahead score that came with only 50 seconds left in the 4th quarter, finishing a game that saw the two heavyweights trading blows and touchdown scores behind stellar running attacks and good ol' fashioned team defense. After the Jaguars scored on a first quarter TD pass from 2027 6', 160 lb. QB Aiden Mueller to 2028 6'3, 205 lb. ATH Lance Radermacher, the game remained scoreless until the Knights answered with their own 3rd quarter strike from 2027 QB Owen Gruchow to 2026 WR Austin Bennett. However, WCA converted their 2pt conversion to take the lead 8-6, but this is when our hero, 2026 RB/LB Jesse Niklaus, capitalized on the moment and used all of his 6', 190 lb. frame to power in from six yards out to put his Jags up a score, and sweetened the pot by scoring following 2pt conversion as well. Nice win on the road for the developing 2025 Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa campaign. No social media for Niklaus, or film, but he'd be a nice little small school scoop for a MIAC, MCAC, or GPAC program looking for local seniors.

Hero = Jesse Niklaus (Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa) 2026. Something about the 612 area private school blue vs. red theme really hits home for me, and Benilde-St. Margaret's vs. Holy Angels delivered a banger of a ball game last Friday night to a tune of a 14-6 OT winner in favor of the Stars. Senior QB Aidan Nygren got the scoring going early with a 38-yard strike to big-time senior sleeper [player_tooltip player_id='1629197' first='Will' last='Souba'], BSM answered in the 3rd quarter with their own TD, this time on the ground, but both sides had missed the extra point and found themselves netted up at 6-6 as the final seconds ticked off the 4th quarter clock. Heroes love themselves some overtime, and that's when ultra-experienced & certified playmaker [player_tooltip player_id='1208064' first='Emmett' last='Anderson'] joined the party, scoring a 3-yard TD AND the ensuring 2pt conversion, after which his defense stepped up finished off the W. The two teams have faced off in the Section 5AAAA championship game each of the past three years, with AHA securing the state championship berth in 2022 and 2024, and Benilde-St. Margaret's winning in 2023, so stay tuned for this rematch later on into the 2025 season.

Hero = [player_tooltip player_id='1208064' first='Emmett' last='Anderson'] (Holy Angels) 2026. The Huskies are a legit 6A program, folks, whether you want to admit it or not, and they gave the Rebels everything they had in Week 2 of the 2025 season. The two sides traded touchdowns throughout all four quarters of the ball game, with the fantastic senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='1491934' first='Joseph' last='Mapson'] leading the way for the Huskies while Champlin Park relied upon first-year QB starter [player_tooltip player_id='1633909' first='Miles' last='Felton'], a 6'3, 200 lb. junior with some real-deal athleticism and duel-threat juice. Entering the 4th quarter as a 21-17 ball game in favor of the Rebels, Champlin's do-it-all weapon Mapson found fellow senior Aidan Wiegert (9 receptions for 89 yards and a TD) on a 13-yard score, with kicker Payton McKnight adding the PAT for good measure. The two sides traded possessions until Champlin Park received one last chance late in the ball game, and the aforementioned Felton threw in his own strike in the form of a 19-yard TD pass to 2026 TE Isaac Axness (6'3, 220), putting the Rebels up too late for Andover to come back from. High scoring, back and forth, and an incredibly exciting 4th quarter that saw our Heroes take the spotlight. You want to see your Heroes, especially your quarterbacks, thrive in the moment, and both signal-callers did just that last Friday night, as you can see by their score lines below. The game was knotted at 23-14 in favor of SCML, but Bauer put up back-to-back explosive drives and splash plays, first in the form of a 50-yard strike to Chase Gerdts and following it with a 77-yard BOMB to Caleb Quast, putting his Bulldogs up 30-23 late in the ball game, but the Spartans weren't done, and answered with their own 28-yard TD pass. However, St. Clair/Mankato went for the 2pt winner and was unsuccessful, and JWP walked away with a thrilling victory early into their 2025 campaign. I'm really excited about Freitag, who is also a good hooper for St. Clair High School, as his frame and stat lines are beginning to pile up impressively. I hope this kid uploads some Hudl film soon. The Eagles sophomore sensation of a 2028 RB [player_tooltip player_id='1893142' first='Owen' last='Konrad'] (you'll be hearing more about him this week) scored a late 4th quarter TD with 2:11 left in the ball game to pull his EP away squad to within one score, but South Dakota State Jackrabbits QB commit [player_tooltip player_id='489731' first='Kaden' last='Harney'] ended any hope of a comeback on the next drive, this time with his legs as opposed to his arm. Harney, a 6'3 pocket-passer with a rifle attached to his right shoulder, has done a great job of developing his duel-threat capability and adding to his athleticism, as the near-200-pounder is reportedly running a 40 in the 4.6s, and he showed that juice at Week 2's clutchest moment. After the ensuring kickoff, Harney took a carry 57 yards to the house for six, helping Maple Grove seal a heard-earned victory over the always-competitive Eden Prairie Eagles. Lucky for the road squad, the Cadets have one of the toughest and most underrated RBs in the Metro in senior [player_tooltip player_id='923837' first='Dominic' last='Baez'], a scrappy, physical, and balanced 5'8 185 lb. bulldog of a tailback who helped STA build up to a 17-0 lead going into the 4th quarter thanks to a ton of scrappy runs and broken tackles. Mayo nearly mounted a comeback behind two touchdown passes from senior QB Isaac Peterson, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. Yes, this was a close game, and yes, Heroes did emerge, but this game also contained some major prep football news as Moorhead's stud 2027 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1194605' first='[player_tooltip player_id='1194604' first='Jett' last='']' last='Feeney'] left the game early with an injured shoulder. On a bad snap, Feeney fell on his throwing shoulder, and although he finished off the last couple of minutes of the quarter, his backup Austin Dryburgh had to step in, which is why this score line was as close as it was. This is big news for both Moorhead and the potential Class 6A state title race, and you also have to give credit to a gritty Woodbury Royals squad for nearly pulling off the upset. When your QB1 goes down, especially an integral piece of your offense like Feeney, you need to rely on your run game, and luckily for the Spuds, they have a P4 RB on roster.
