After back-to-back state championship appearances including last year's 38-24 victory over Warsaw, the tournament success factor has bumped up Decatur Central to Class 6A in 2025. If they are to make a return trip to Lucas Oil, they'll have to win against a stouter group of opponents, starting with a road game at Avon in Week One.

The Hawks, though, have a legitimate chance of repeating as state champions even though they'll face more difficult opponents. Here are three reasons why they're my dark horse pick in 2025:

They have a great quarterback.

Decatur Central closely resembles defending 6A state champions Brownsburg on offense. Led by Toledo commit [player_tooltip player_id='223703' first='Bo' last='Polston'], they have a great dual-threat player at quarterback who can run and plays within an offense that lets his strengths really shine. Like [player_tooltip player_id='709552' first='Oscar' last='Frye'], Polston can throw, but he is a bit more athletic than Frye: he can run and pick up huge yardage with his feet.

They have serious weapons on offense.

Indiana commit Kashmir Hicks is arguably the most dynamic and explosive player in Indiana. With his change-of-direction, speed, and outstanding vision, he went wild in the state championship game and figures to be even better in 2025. Along with Eastern Michigan running back Fa'Rel Carter, the Hawks have a very potent offense.

[player_tooltip player_id='1000045' first='Mykul' last='Campbell']

Campbell has to be one of the most underrated prospects to come out of Indiana. As a safety with great height and length, he has elite closing speed and is outstanding against the run and has the ball skills in coverage to boot. He holds MAC offers, but he is undoubtedly a Power 4-level talent.
