Washington came into the 2024 football season with a 30-game winning streak and expectations as high as ever. Despite having to replace a three-year starter at quarterback, the Warriors were once again the favorites in a new Class 2A landscape. Class 2A was split into two divisions and the Warriors were the favorites in 2A-1, featuring the larger of the 2A schools. The Warriors would have to fight and claw their way to another state title in 2024, but they would once again finish the year with a perfect record. They went to double overtime in week one against Sulphur and there were multiple times where it looked like the streak would come to an end. But they prevailed 27-24. The next close call came in week seven, when they went to overtime against Marlow but would escape with a 35-28 win. And until Washington loses a game, it will always be mentioned that Marlow was the last team to beat the Warriors, all the way back in 2021. From there, the Warriors would roll, dominating their way to another state championship game appearance. And it was another date with the Millwood Falcons. It was a low-scoring game and one reminiscent of a match-up where both teams were very familiar with one another. But in the end, Washington beat the Falcons in the state title game for the third straight year. The winning streak went up to 44 consecutive victories and despite several close calls throughout the 2024 season, the Warriors remained the kings of 2A football.

2025 OUTLOOK

There are a handful of programs in Oklahoma right now that feel like they've reached “inevitable” status when it comes to championship success and Washington is one of them. The Warriors are coming into this season with 44 consecutive victories and looking for a fourth consecutive state championship. What's scary is how young but talented this year's team is. The Warriors will have to replace some very experienced and talented players but this has definitely become a program that simply reloads, year after year. Eight starters are returning on the offensive side of the ball with the bulk of them coming on the line of scrimmage. They have a sophomore quarterback that is coming off a Freshman Of The Year season and several skill players around him. It's crazy to think they could replace several multiple-year starters and have an offense that scores even more points in 2025. Defensively, the Warriors will bring back seven starters on that side of the ball. They'll be led by one of the best linebackers in the state and this is another situation where the Warriors are going to be able to shut down a lot of teams throughout the year. Now, Washington will be challenged this season in a handful of spots during the regular season. Those challenging games a year ago will still be challenging this year. And as with any great winning streak, the pressure does get ramped up. If the Warriors capture a fourth consecutive state championship and go undefeated doing so, they'll tie Bixby for the state's longest win streak by an 11-man program. But this is a team and program that is used to the pressure, they expect to win and win at a high level and that will be the case again in 2025.

Junior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='473879' first='Case' last='Alexander'] has to be on track to becoming the most productive defensive player in program history. Alexander started as a freshman, emerging as one of the top players in his class. He would then elevate his game last season, becoming an All State 2nd Team selection. Now, he goes into the 2025 season as one of the best football players in the state. When it comes to his work on defense, we have nothing to add other than he should continue his dominant play on that side of the ball. What's interesting is what he can do on offense. We saw flashes of it last season at the tight end position. But with Nate Roberts gone, Alexander might become one of the top targets on offense.

Sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='473891' first='Creed' last='Barrett']'s start to his high school career went about as good as you could have planned it. We knew that Barrett had a chance to be special after watching him perform at a very high level at several of our camps. But he exceeded all expectations during his freshman season. The biggest surprise was that he performed his best against the best competition and in the toughest circumstances. He ran away with Freshman Of The Year honors and D1 offers followed shortly after his freshman season. Now, he's got a year of experience under his belt and we're looking forward to seeing what he can do during his sophomore season.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1109231' first='Dawson' last='Thomas'] will come into this season as arguably the most experienced player on the Washington roster. Thomas has been a name to know over the last two seasons and now, he's the unquestioned veteran of this unit. Offensively, Thomas will be lining up at wide receiver and he could end up being one of the top targets for Barrett in the passing game. Defensively, he'll be roaming the secondary and that's one area that we did have question marks for the Warriors coming into this season. They lost a lot of experience and production in the secondary. Thomas will be critical to bringing those new guys along as well as performing at a high level himself.

Earlier in the preview, we talked about how Washington has gotten to the point where they just reload, year after year. He's the perfect example. For almost every other team in Class 2A-1 last season, running back [player_tooltip player_id='474035' first='Josiah' last='Dickerson'] would have started as a freshman. But he waited for his turn behind a three-year starter and now, Dickerson gets a chance to start for three years himself. We've watched the young Washington standout quite a bit over the last 18 months and he is without a doubt one of the best running backs in his class. Washington fans got flashes of it last season. But now, with Dickerson moving into the starter role, he's primed for a monster 2025 season.

We mentioned earlier how Washington was bringing back almost everyone on the offensive line. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1702000' first='Lane' last='Taylor'] is one of several starters returning on the line of scrimmage and that's a big reason why we think the Warrior offense this season could take a step up in production. Taylor and the rest of this unit was somewhat inexperienced going into last season. That was an area where we weren't sure what to think. Fast forward 365 days and it's become an unquestioned strength of this team as we inch closer to the start of the 2025 season. Taylor is one of several guys to keep an eye on this season when it comes to playing on either side of the line of scrimmage.

Aug. 29th - Community Christian
- From 2016-2023, these two teams were district foes but last year, they opened up the season against one another and will do the same in 2025. Washington is 9-0 in the last decade against the Royals and show no signs of slowing down. They won 46-3 in last year's season opener.
Sept. 5th - AT Sulphur
- This will be one of the best games of week one as Washington goes on the road to face Sulphur. The Bulldogs are a highly ranked 3A team and nearly beat Washington last season. The Warriors prevailed 27-24 in double overtime and both teams have title aspirations in 2025.
Sept. 12th - AT Purcell
- Washington wraps up non-district play on the road in week two against Purcell. These two teams have met every year since 2008, with the majority of those meetings coming in non-district play. The Warriors have won 11 straight in the series, including last year's 45-14 win.
Sept. 26th - Dickson
- District play will open up in week four with Washington hosting Dickson. After the redistricting shuffle prior to the 2024 season, Dickson landed in Washington's district and it would be the first time these two teams have met in recent memory. Washington won 54-0 in 2024.
Oct. 3rd - AT Marietta
- Marietta was a new district opponent on the schedule last season for the Warriors. Washington had no problems, winning 64-7 in their 2024 meeting. That was just the second time they've met in the last two decades. The other time came in the 2015 first round of the playoffs.
Oct. 9th - Little Axe
- Washington begins the second half of the regular season at home against Little Axe. The Warriors have met them five times in the last decade and hold a 5-0 record. That includes dominant wins in each of the last three years, including a 49-7 win last season.
Oct. 16th - AT Marlow
- The district title could be on the line here as Washington goes on the road to face Marlow in week seven. These two teams played a classic last year, with the Warriors prevailing 35-28 in overtime. Marlow is the last team that handed Washington a loss, coming in the 2021 title game.
Oct. 24th - Lexington
- In week eight, Washington will host Lexington and this is another series that has been completely one-sided, in favor of the Warriors. Washington rolled to a 53-0 win last year and have scored at least 50 points in the last five meetings with the Bulldogs.
Oct. 31st - AT Crossings Christian
- On a Halloween night, Washington will go on the road to face Crossings Christian. The Knights became another new district opponent for the Warriors following the redistricting shuffle in 2024. Washington beat Crossings 42-21 last season but the Knights ended up making the playoffs.
Nov. 7th - Lindsay
- The regular season finale will be at home as Washington hosts Lindsay. The Warriors rolled to a 35-0 win against the Leopards last season and they've won six straight in the series. During the winning streak, the offense has been potent and the defense has been dominant.

NOTABLE

Washington has a few active and historic streaks to keep an eye on as we move forward during the 2025 season. The obvious one is the 44-game winning streak. They haven't lost a game since walking off the field at UCO with the silver ball in December of 2021. But the Warriors also have one of the longest active playoff streaks. They've made it to the playoffs in 34 consecutive seasons and they are behind only three other schools that have longer active streaks. They're also tied with 4A powerhouse Tuttle with 34 straight playoff appearances. Cascia Hall (38) Jenks (36) and Union (35) are the only schools that have longer active streaks than the Warriors. Look, upsets happen and anything can happen in football. But we think the playoff streak will be extended this season. The biggest question is how long will that winning streak stay intact? Right now, they are currently 3rd all time in state history for 11-man programs. Only Bixby (58) and Wagoner (48) had longer winning streaks. So it goes without saying, but if the Warriors capture another state title and go 14-0 in the process, they'll tie Bixby for the state's longest 11-man winning streak.
