The Millwood Falcons came into the 2024 season with the same goals in mind and that was making it back to Edmond and capturing that state championship. The Falcons came into the season as the number two team in our 2A-1 rankings and they certainly looked the part. The only trip up early on was a non-district loss to Heritage Hall. They let everyone know very quickly that they would be a team to be reckoned with in early October. First, they beat another top five team in Jones 46-13, taking advantage of turnovers to pull away from the Longhorns. The following week, they went on the road and took down Oklahoma Christian School 41-7. From there, the Falcons would roll to another district championship, finishing out the regular season with a 9-1 record. They beat Crossings Christian and Chandler in the first two rounds and then faced Marlow in the semifinals. This game had one of the best finishes we saw in person in 2024. The game went into double overtime and after Millwood scored and got the extra point, Marlow responded with a touchdown of their own. Millwood would get a stop on the two-point conversion to advance to their third straight state championship game and for the third straight year, they'd meet Washington. And unfortunately for Millwood, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Millwood had to settle for silver, after losing 7-6 to the Warriors in the title game. The season came to an end with a 12-2 record and a third straight Runner Up finish.

2025 OUTLOOK

Another season and another year where Millwood comes into it as a top five team and one of the top teams in their class. The Falcons checked in at #4 in our preseason rankings and despite having to replace quite a bit from last year's team, they still expect to be in the mix for that state championship. Only five starters are back on the offensive side of the ball. They need to replace a three-year starter at quarterback, along with their top receiver and several offensive linemen. However, the Falcons do return their star running back and that will give them a leg up as they go into this season. And while they have to replace their leading receiver, the Falcons watched as several players enjoyed breakout seasons last fall at that position. Defensively, things are a little tougher as they have to replace four starters from last year's team. The front seven in particular took a major hit. The Falcons had the benefit last year of playing guys on both sides of the ball that had multiple years of starting experience. It was a senior-heavy team. But graduation came and now the Falcons have to reload. So while this year's team will most certainly look different, Millwood is one of a handful of programs across the state that you expect to reload and be ready to go with a new cast of characters. When you look at the schedule in front of Millwood, it's going to be a challenging one and those new names will need to grow up in a hurry. They play Heritage Hall in non-district play before gearing up for a district that will be one of the tougher ones in Class 2A-1 this season. But Millwood has made playing for the state title in Edmond a tradition and they don't plan on breaking traditions anytime soon.

Junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1109329' first='Anthony' last='Keys'] was one of the breakout stars of the 2024 season. He got playing time as a freshman in 2023 but he was also splitting carries with two other running backs. Last season, he became an absolute workhorse in the Millwood backfield. He finished the year with a little over 200 carries and had nearly 1,500 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground. He was also effective as a pass catcher, finishing the season with a little over 300 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Now, Keys is going into his junior season and we can't help but wonder how his production will look after this season. He's going into a year as arguably the top running back in 2A-1.

If you're looking for potential breakout players this season, sophomore wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1707363' first='Carter' last='Ray-Thompson'] could be your guy. Last season, Thompson was just a freshman and had to fight for playing time. But when we caught Millwood in person on several occasions, he was able to make plays. This season, we anticipate his production getting a major spike as he attempts to become the top receiver in this offense. With Keys back, the Millwood offense is going to be in a good position but they need more playmakers to step up. If Thompson is able to take the next step in his progression, he's going to be a player that has that breakout season this fall.

Player movement has become very common in high school football nowadays and Millwood was not exempt from that. The Falcons were supposed to have a four-year starter at the quarterback position but he's moved to a different school and the Falcons are now moving things around. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1707360' first='Denver' last='Young'] appears to be the next guy at quarterback for the Falcons. In the preseason info that we received, Young's position has been changed to quarterback after he was a running back and linebacker last season. Young brings a lot of athleticism and speed to the quarterback position. And like we mentioned earlier, he's going to have plenty of talent around him at the skill positions.

Junior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='506530' first='Domonique' last='Martin II'] is one of the top returning receivers from last year's team. With Ray-Thompson on one side and Martin on the other, the Falcons should have plenty of firepower for whoever ends up taking the snaps at quarterback. Last season, Martin would finish the year with 18 catches for nearly 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns. With Thompson graduating, that will certainly open the door for Martin to get more targets this fall and see his production go up. The Falcons have quite a few players that have that potential of being a breakout player this season and Martin is near the top of the list. Keep an eye out for him.

Both sides of the line of scrimmage are an area where Millwood is going to need new players to step up in a hurry. One of the names to watch out for on both sides of the line of scrimmage is junior [player_tooltip player_id='1707364' first='Malachi' last='Connelly'] as he heads into this fall. When it came to some of the top junior prospects on this team, Connelly was one of the first players listed and he has the potential to step into a major role this season. As we've made perfectly clear in this preview, Millwood has plenty of playmakers and overall skill talent. They need new guys to step up on the line. Whether it's offense, defense or both, Connelly could be one of those names and would be a major boost.

Sept. 13th - Douglass
- As of now, the annual Soul Bowl will kick off the season for Millwood. The Falcons could add a week zero or week one game and we'll update the schedule if it happens. Millwood has won nine straight in this series, including three straight shutout victories, like last year's 63-0 win.
Sept. 19th - AT Heritage Hall
- The non-district slate will finish up with a short road trip over to Heritage Hall in week three. This has been a strong series since it started in 2018 but the Falcons are hungry for a win. They've lost the last six after winning back in 2018. Both teams will look quite different this season.
Sept. 26th - Blackwell
- The district slate will open up at home as Millwood hosts Blackwell in week four. The Falcons won 65-6 last season and it was one of their bigger margins of victory in 2024. They've met in each of the last three years and Millwood has won each game by 45+ points.
Oct. 3rd - AT Jones
- It's only week five but it's not crazy to think that the district title will be decided right here, when Millwood goes on the road to face Jones. The Falcons beat up on the Longhorns early and often in last year's 46-13 victory. But this has been a series that has been back and forth with neither team winning two in a row in nearly two decades.
Oct. 10th - Oklahoma Christian School
- Following the road trip to Jones, Millwood returns home to square off with Oklahoma Christian School. The Falcons have won four straight in the series with the Saints. That includes last year's 41-7 victory. And during this current win streak, that was the largest margin of victory.
Oct. 17th - AT Mount St. Mary
- Mount St. Mary was a new team on the Millwood schedule last season as they were put into the same district. These two teams hadn't met on the gridiron in nearly two decades. The Falcons prevailed last year 42-6 but the Rockets bring back a lot of experience and talent that could make this year interesting.
Oct. 24th - AT Chisholm
- The Falcons go back on the road in week eight to Chisholm to face the Longhorns. Millwood beat Chisholm 20-12 last season and they've won three straight in the series. These two teams became district foes in 2022. The Longhorns could look different this year under a first year head coach.
Oct. 31st - Crooked Oak
- On a Halloween Friday night in week nine, Millwood will host Crooked Oak. This game was forfeited last year. It's a series that has been completely one-sided, in favor of the Falcons. They haven't lost in recent memory, including a streak of four consecutive shutout victories.
Nov. 7th - AT Perry
- The regular season comes to an end with a road game against Perry in week ten. Last year, it was a weather-impacted and low scoring game. Millwood got out of there with a 6-0 victory as they closed out an undefeated district record. They've met in each of the last three years and Millwood is 3-0.

NOTABLE

Over the past three seasons, Millwood has a record of 38-6 with three straight Runner Up finishes. But at this point, they have to feel like they're living season after season with deja vu. In the last three seasons, they are 38-0 against everyone except Heritage Hall and Washington. But unfortunately, they are 0-6 against just those two teams. In each of the last three seasons, they've lost to Heritage Hall in the regular season and then they lost to Washington in the state championship game. Well, they get Heritage Hall again in week three and only time will tell if they get another shot at the Warriors. And look, the ultimate goal for every team is to win the state championship but only one team can do it. Millwood has been one of the best programs in the state over the last three years and really that's been the case for the last decade. They have an outstanding program, led by some fantastic coaches and this has turned into a program that just reloads year after year. So despite having to replace the majority of their starters, they expect to be in the mix again this fall.
