The Mangum Tigers came into the 2024 football season with high expectations and for good reason. They brought back the majority of their starters, were ranked high in the preseason rankings and on the field, they looked like a serious contender in the new Class A-2. In non-district play, Mangum would roll to three straight wins and were off to a 3-0 start in the blink of an eye. That dominant play would continue once they got into district play. Mangum started the season 8-0 and the closest game during that stretch was a 21-point victory over Hobart in week two. Simply put, they were absolutely rolling. But the calendar would flip to November and injuries and bad bounces caught up with the Tigers. In week nine, they lost a high-scoring affair with Thomas 47-46. That would give the Terriers the district championship and Mangum would have to settle for second place. They wrapped up the regular season the following week with a win over Carnegie to finish the regular season 9-1. The Tigers were then upset by Konawa 20-15 in the first round of the playoffs. Just like that, the season was over at 9-2. After an 8-0 start, Mangum went 1-2 in their final three games. A team that had scored 30+ points in every game during the regular season was held to 15 points in the first round. For the fifth straight year, Mangum would have the season come to an end in the first round of the playoffs. However, as we start to look ahead to the 2025 football season, there is still room for plenty of optimism for a team that appears ready to finally take that next step.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Tigers are in familiar territory as we enter the 2025 football season. Once again, they find themselves relatively high in the Class A-2 preseason rankings. They are considered one of the top contenders in this class and now they have to go prove it on the football field this fall. All in all, seven starters come back on an offense that averaged over 40 points per game. They have to find a way to replace the production of a very underrated running back. But they have one of the better offensive lines in Class A-2 and multiple quarterbacks who can pick up the slack if necessary. Defensively, the Tigers bring back eight starters on that side of the ball and this is a unit that could be one of the best in the class this season. They gave up just shy of 15 points per game in 2024 and could be better in 2025. The front seven has the potential to be absolutely nasty and will be a problem for opposing offenses. The schedule also looks like one that Mangum could have similar success like we saw in 2024. On paper, the district looks like it will run through Thomas and Mangum for the second straight year. So it's easy to put all eyes on that Halloween night match-up in week nine but the Tigers will have to take care of business if they want a chance to contend for the district championship. But the biggest thing for Mangum is just finally taking that next step. They've had really good teams over the last few years. Then they get snake bit in one way or another. Five straight first round exits is a tough pill to swallow for a team that has a combined record 34-19 during that time and 34-14 if you take out the five playoff losses. And while Class A-2 ended up being a one-team show in 2024 with Woodland dominating their way to a championship, that doesn't feel the same in 2025. Any team in the top five could make a run to Edmond and lift the gold ball. Mangum is hoping to make that next step.

Sophomore offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1054230' first='Aiden' last='Augustine'] is quickly establishing himself as one of the very best prospects at his position in the state's 2028 class. At this time last year, we were excited about the potential he had going into his freshman season. He would exceed all preseason expectations and he continues to grow physically and when you combine that with his overall skillset, he has the potential to be the best offensive lineman in Class A-2 this season. Defensively, Augustine will also add a valuable piece to the Tiger front seven. But this Mangum offensive line has the potential to be very special and Augustine is a big reason behind that.

Sophomore linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1522520' first='Cooper' last='Kerbo'] wasted very little time getting on our radar during his freshman season. Kerbo was not someone that we knew about around this time last year but it didn't take long to figure out he was a name to know moving forward. Last season, he would lead the Tigers with 133 tackles and it wasn't particularly close between him and second place. Simply put, he was a tackling machine for Mangum in 2024. We don't have the stats for every defensive freshman from a year ago but we'd be surprised if any 2028 prospect had more tackles than Kerbo last fall. He's firmly on our radar and we're looking forward to seeing what he does for an encore this fall.

Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1708001' first='Krae' last='Manney'] will attempt to replace one of the best running backs in the state last season in Austin Solis. It won't be an easy task but Manney could end up having a similar season that we saw from Solis a year ago, where running for 150 yards and two touchdowns looked like a weekly occurrence. Last season, Manney would run for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. We think that production will see a serious spike this season as his carries go up dramatically. And like we said with Augustine, the Mangum offensive line is going to be very good this season. That's going to open the door (and the hole) for Manney to burst through for a big year.

For the second straight year, junior [player_tooltip player_id='916843' first='Remington' last='Laughlin'] had injuries derail what could have been a breakout season at the quarterback position. Last season, it was a torn labrum that would force him to move from quarterback to the tight end position. And credit to Laughlin for strapping up and doing whatever he had to do to stay on the field and help his team, including playing linebacker on the defensive side of the ball. But when it comes to Laughlin, there is so much potential for him at the quarterback position. If Laughlin is unable to go by the start of this season at QB, the Tigers know they can turn to Beau Rogers but the plan is for Laughlin to be QB1 in September.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1325113' first='Trey' last='Williams'] is arguably the most experienced player on this Mangum defense and the production that he's had in his career on the defensive side of the ball is through the roof. Whether it's been on the defensive line or at linebacker, all Williams has done over the last few years is produce at a high level. Williams has over 300 tackles in his career and he moved to the defensive line last season. Williams will be setting the tone for a Mangum front seven that has the potential to be pretty special in 2025. Offensively, Williams will also be moving back to the offensive line after playing tight end last season. And he's yet another name to watch on that Mangum O-Line.

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - Wilson
- For the second straight year, Mangum's regular season will kick off with a game against Wilson. Last year, it was the first time in recent memory that these two teams squared off. Mangum would have no problems with the new series, beating Wilson 40-6 on the road.
Sept. 12th - AT Hobart
- Whether it's in district play or non-district play, these two are very familiar with one another. Mangum will go to Hobart in week two. After meeting in district play from 2018-2023, they became non-district opponents last year. Mangum would win 35-14 and that was their fourth straight win in the series.
Sept. 19th - Watonga
- The Tigers will wrap up non-district play in week three, at home, against Watonga. Last season, these teams met for the first time in nearly a decade. Mangum would roll to a 34-7 victory. Before last season, the last time these two teams would face off came back in 2017.
Sept. 26th - AT Apache
- District play will kick off in week four against Apache. And this is going to be a game that can set the tone for how the district slate will play out. Last year, Mangum beat Apache 70-12 and that would snap a two-game losing streak and it was their second win in the last five years.
Oct. 3rd - AT Southwest Covenant
- With the district reshuffling, Mangum ended up with a few new opponents in their district and Southwest Covenant was one of them. Last year, Mangum beat Southwest Covenant 43-18. For Southwest Covenant, it was their first season playing 11-man football after transitioning from 8-man.
Oct. 10th - Mooreland
- The second half of the regular season will begin in week six as Mangum will return home following two road games to host Mooreland. These two teams have met in the playoffs quite a bit but last year was the first regular season meeting in a while. Mangum prevailed 40-8 in 2024.
Oct. 16th - Cordell
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Mangum will host Cordell in district action and the Tigers will be looking to continue their recent dominance in this series. Over the last two decades, it's been pretty even, but Mangum has won four straight and they haven't been close, including last year's 66-8 win.
Oct. 24th - AT Texhoma
- In week eight, Mangum will go back on the road to face Texhoma. Last season, Texhoma became a new district opponent and a new opponent in general for the Tigers. Mangum would roll to a 46-8 victory in their 2024 meeting. That Texhoma team would go on to be a quarterfinalist.
Oct. 31st - Thomas
- All eyes will be on this Halloween night showdown as the Tigers will host Thomas. Both teams are in the preseason top five and both teams expect to win this district. Only one team can. Last year, Thomas would prevail 47-46 and went on to win the district title. This has the makings of another instant classic.
Nov. 7th - Carnegie
- The regular season comes to a close in week ten, at home, against Carnegie. This is another district series that has historically been even but Mangum has the advantage right now. They've won five straight in the series, including last year's 41-12 victory. Prior to this win streak, Carnegie won four straight.

NOTABLE

When you're looking at the teams in Class A-2, Mangum is definitely near the top of the list in terms of consistent winners in the regular season. In the last four seasons alone, Mangum has a 31-8 record in the regular season. But the playoffs have become a hill that feels more like a mountain. The Tigers have made eight consecutive playoff appearances but are desperate to have more success once they get into the postseason. During this current streak, the only playoff win came in the 2019 first round before falling to Pawnee in the quarterfinal round. In fact, nine of the last ten playoff appearances for Mangum have ended with them losing in the first round. The Tigers have the talent to not only win a few games in the playoffs but to contend for the state championship. The pieces are in place. But when you're talking about this level of football, one or two injuries to key players can completely turn a season upside down. Mangum certainly hasn't forgotten the way last season ended and will be hungrier than ever to not only make it back to the playoffs but stick around for a while.
